Two questions about brassica, and apple trees
Early replied to Ford's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
I have never used anything to cover pruning cuts; have read several times that such is not needed. Suggestion: Make no level, flat cuts (cuts parallel with the ground)...they will hold water and possibly speed up rotting and insect production. Make all pruning cuts at an angle that will allow water to run off. -
You are correct, of course, but the branches of the Delaware are no longer "natural streams". They have been forever tainted by the reservoirs, Pepacton and Cannonsville. Sure, they are great trout fisheries, but they are as un-natural as can be. Trout...big trout...were caught in both streams before the reservoirs, back when they were natural streams. Back then, the streams warmed up in the summer. That warmup permitted locals to swim...fish (by wading wet)...and enjoy the waters of the streams. Not so any more: Both branches of the Delaware are too cold...even in summer...for swimming or wet wade fishing. So...the twead-wearing flyfishers have a gold mine.....the rest of us...those who remember the good old days...have heartache!

I have always thought that buying expensive "designer" ammo for turkey hunting is a mistake. Plain Jane, off-the shelf lead in 3" 12 or 20 ga. will work fine. And, as suggested earlier, 2 3/4" shells have killed a lot of birds.

Two approaches that have worked for me when hunting public land, for both turkeys and deer: 1) Park at an intersection of roads (or start at an intersection of trails), then walk away from the intersection on a route that bisects the angle the roads make at the intersection. The farther you walk...the farther you will get from each road...and the farther you will get from potential conflict with other hunters. (Or, in deer hunting, the better position you will be in to intercept deer moved by other hunters coming in off the roads/trails.) Use this approach to scout an unfamiliar area prior to the season. 2) Park in an unlikely place...somewhere where others are unlikely to park. Park at the base of a steep hill; one that requires a hard climb right out of your vehicle. Or park alongside a stream that is just deep enough to require hip boots to cross...Keep your hippers in your vehicle, and you can quickly get to where others, without boots, cannot. Climb that hill, or cross that stream, and you just might be in prime hunting territory and have it all to yourself. Good Luck, Early

gunsmith that can/will thread a barrel for chokes?
Early replied to TeeBugg's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
I have a 21" deer barrel, with rifle sights and RemChoke for my 11-87. With the Rem Extra Full choke tube, it is a real turkey killer! My grandson has a similar setup for his 870...works great on turkeys, too! -
Syracuse.com - Wanted: Your favorite trout recipe
Early replied to HuntingNY-News's topic in New York State Hunting News
Shallow fry whole trout in a combination of butter and canola oil. Carefully remove the meat from the bones and enjoy with no embellishment beyond salt and pepper....maybe a little lemon juice. Those that propose recipes requiring many exotic ingredients, really do not like the taste of trout. (Same could be said for all those whacko venison recipes!) -
Probably, it was her duty to report to the Campus Police....Theirs to report to real cops thereafter. Whatever...the system did not work. This testifies to the fact that laws/rules/procedures cannot stop the actions of those who wish to hurt us. And, yet, we continue to pass laws that only impact law-abiding citizens. The problem, friends and neighbors, is not with us....It is with the bad guys!

Two questions about brassica, and apple trees
Early replied to Ford's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Obviously, pruning should be done when trees are dormant, but you can get away with minimal pruning now...or anytime. Pruning now, however will encourage growth and expose scars to disease/insects....which can be corrected by proper pruning during the next dormant time and with the use of combination fruit tree sprays. Another apple tree suggestion....Do NOT over-fertilize. If you do, you will grow branches and leaves; you want to grow apples! I have trees that are 12-20 years old, bearing well, that have been fertilized only twice. Good luck. -
C'mon Growalot....are you really that mean?? Do you really love your dog and hate everone else's? I seriously hope that your dog crosses a line somewhere and gets whacked by some irate landowner or deer lover. (Actually, I don't, but it would serve you right!)

Dogs will be dogs...and, given the chance, some will chase deer. Big deal! If it happens, the problem lies with the dog's owner, not the dog. Do not shoot the dog if you are unwilling to shoot the owner. Where, is it inscribed in stone that deer are worth more than dogs? Face it...men who shoot dogs are pussies!

I have a buddy who couldn't hunt his way out of a WalMart parking lot...and couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with his shotgun, even if he were shooting from the inside. I take him along as a confidence decoy!

So, again, I ask......How much did you make from the sale of those pelts?? -

1 3/4 oz of 5"s...you sure? Heaviest load I have seen is 1 5/16. Whatever, Winchester makes some good turkey loads...use them!

Dick's...EMS...Gander Mt. and other such stores frequently run kayak clinics for those new to the sport, where attendees get to try several different makes/models of kayaks. My son went to three such clinics before purchasing his kayak; he thought he was well-prepared for that first purchase. Look for such a clinic near you.

Asked a different way...."Let's see...Do I want to punch a number of 9mm holes in my attacker...or, just stick my finger in his eye?"

Thank you so much for this picture. Blue jays were always the favorite bird of my son...who is just about to retire (22 years) from the Navy. I sent him your picture...He loved it! Thank you, Early
