  1. I haven't done this but I have read online of people doing this. Go on you tube and just type in home made smoker. A lot of guys are using electric hot plates instead of the more expensive heating elements. I saw one where the guy used a 2 burner hot plate, one burner for chips, one for water. Single hot plates are around $15-$20. The 2 burner one is around $30 or so. I'm not sure how much room you have to work with. I was going to try to make my own out of a wine or whiskey barrel but couldn't find one locally. I ended up buying a Smokin It brand electric smoker. It was more than I wanted to spend ($400+) but it's built like a tank and should outlast me. Good luck!
  2. I have killed 2 deer with my BAR Mark II in 30-06, but they were shots of 75 yards or less. (Mine sat in the safe for many, many years because the area I hunt was shot gun only for years.) The only negative I can find with mine is the weight, it's heavy. I have a 4x12x40 Nikon Monarch on mine and shoot 180 grain Remington Core Loks. I see the BARs are selling for around $1100 now days. I paid $300 brand new for mine from a co worker when I was working as a NYS Corrections Officer. The guy won it in a gun raffle and said his dad had a bunch of guns so he didn't need it. He named the price, I didn't argue! LOL This was about 18 years or so ago, I thought they were selling for around $850-900 back then. I had 2 different guys approach me in less than a week wanting to buy it from me. I told them thanks but no thanks. This was my once in a lifetime chance to own a gun I never could bring myself to spend that kind on $$$ on. I hope you get things worked out with your BAR.
  3. I'm selling a nice walnut stock and forend off my 12 gauge Remington 11-87 Special Purpose. The recoil pad and screws are also included. It is in nice shape but does have a few slight marks on it. Send me an email or phone number and I can send some pictures to you. Price is $80 shipped. Thanks for looking.
  4. You did the right thing. Years ago, I came across a doe that was gut shot and bedded down. I walked right up to her. She had her head up, but was suffering from extreme shock Her eyes were all glazed over, she didn't have enough strength to even try to get up. I didnt have a doe tag to use but decided to put her out of her misery regardless. We were hunting state land that always has a couple other groups hunting it opening weekend. I radioed to my friend my situation. Lucky for me, someone from another group came down to tag and take the deer. He was happy to have some venison. Since then, my buddy and I have killed probably 4 or 5 does that have been wounded by other hunters. In the region we hunt now we usually get 2 doe permits each so it's not a hard decision to make.
  5. Wow. I have been a customer of Cableas for over 20 years and have had their credit card for about 12 years or so. I haven't received one thing in the mail about this store opening, no flyer or any discount postcard of any kind. I have purchased thousands of dollars in merchandise over the years. I thought the store opened later this week. I have only been to the Hartford store so I can't compare their other stores. Honestly, I wish Cabelas had stayed out of New York. Now we have to pay more tax $ on things we enjoy doing!!!!
  6. This gun is a Diana model made in West Germany. It has a metal safety and the scope was made in Japan. Thanks
  7. It's a model 34. If you have any more questions I can answer them later when I get home. Thanks
  8. Selling the above RWS SPRINGER. It is in very good condition, in has some slight marks on the stock. I'm asking $200 shipped or best offer. Will do better on face to face deal. I'm located about 5 minutes north of exit 28 (Fonda) of the NYS Thruway. Sorry no trades at this time. Thanks for looking
  9. My 11 year old daughter loves venison. My wife doesn't care for it because she says "it stinks". I cooked up a tenderloin last week for my daughter and me. I jokingly asked my wife if she wanted a bite and was shocked when she tried it. She had 8-10 bites and admitted it was good!!!!!
  10. Go shoot some Elites. Made here in NY. Best warranty and customer service out there. Elite's back wall is unbelievable. You will be impressed.
  11. Looks like a great spot. What area are you in? Good Luck.
  12. I usually read maybe 2 bowhunting magazines a year that I get for my birthday. This is all you need right here: http://www.archerytalk.com/vb/index.php
  13. Wow, looks like you are on to something there. What are you using for scent(s)???
  14. The farmer has been heard numerous times saying "We shoot everything". I know he has at least 30 landowner permits which he does everything in his power to fill. Yes he has a right to these permits if thats what the state is giving him. We find on average 2 to 4 deer on our property dead (found a nice little 7 point with a drop tine dead last Dec that I passed on 3 different times during bow season). He has never asked us once for permission to try to recover these deer. He told another hunter that if they make to the "woods" they don't bother looking anymore. The same hunter told me he saw his group with 3 button bucks the last weekend of the season. Frustrating to see and hear, that's all I'm trying to say. I was lucky enough to kill a 147" 8 point there back in 2009. The bucks don't have much of a chance to grow with these guys around, and yes a few have them have been in trouble with the law and DEC. My buddy lost a trail camera last season too. How would you feel???????
  15. I don't know what to believe. I think I read here a couple weeks ago the youth hunt wasn't going to happen. A guy I work with swears it passed and the youth hunt is going to happen. I see Cayuga county allows rifle hunting now. I'm a little nervous about this, the farmer on the neighboring property to us has a "shoot everything" mentality and a band of idiots that hunt there. That's all we need is them showing another generation bad hunting habits.
  16. Take a look at the HHA sights. Most of their models are a 1 pin slider design but they do make a couple other models. I have a slider that is unbelievably bright. Check ebay or Archery Talk for some used ones, they are a little pricey new. Pay attention to how many feet of fiber optic the sight has. The more fiber optic, the more light it will let in, the brighter the pin will be. As far as a quiver goes, it depends on if you are going to leave it mounted at all times or not. I take mine off when I get in my stand. I have a Bohning Lynx. They run about $25-$35. Good quiver for the money. It holds arrows well. If you are planning on shooting with your quiver on you should look at a Tight Spot. Pretty pricey but I haven't heard any bad things about them.
  17. Tons of good bows out there. WARNING: IF you draw an Elite bow and experience the UNBELIEVABLE draw, valley, and back wall you will own one. They are that good. For $400 you can probably get a used 2009 or 2010 Elite on Achery Talk.
  18. Nice looking blind. I've been wanting to build an elevated blind the same size. I got some metal roofing for free from a roofing job. I think i can get some vinyl siding for free too and just spray paint it. Are those 2x6's or 2x8's for the floor joists? 4x4 post or are they bigger? How high off the ground is the floor? Did you anchor your posts in the ground? I was thinking of sinking the posts in the ground 3 feet or so and using Quickrete.
  19. All you need to change the draw length is draw modules. They cost around $40 new or you can get them from $25 to $30 used on Archery Talk or the Elite Forum. You have to put your bow on a press to change them I believe. I haven't shot a Mathews in a few years but Elite makes some great bows. I switched over from a Bowtech and haven't regretted it. Elite's are smooth drawing and the backwall is unreal! Their bows are made in New York now and their customer service is top notch.
  20. Wow, sproutin already! I have a pic of a nice buck still with his rack from 3/22.
  21. I'm thinking about buying a smoker. I see Cabela's has this one on sale for $129: http://www.cabelas.com/product/Masterbuilt-Analog-Electric-Smoker/715300.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch.cmd%3Fform_state%3DsearchForm%26N%3D0%26fsch%3Dtrue%26Ntk%3DAllProducts%26Ntt%3Dsmoker%26WTz_l%3DHeader%253BSearch-All%2BProducts%26x%3D17%26y%3D5&Ntt=smoker&WTz_l=Header%3BSearch-All+Products I don't have any experience with smokers so any help would be appreciated. Thanks
