  1. I've killed deer that weren't even that big,lol Are you sure it's not a WOLF!
  2. Always nice to see some fresh skull ideas. I like the last one best.
  3. Your free trial period has expired for HuntingNY. Stick a quarter in your SD card slot and try logging in again.
  4. Coyotes and fox always seem to skirt my carcasses just at the edge of the flash range no matter what cams I've used.(todays example below) Seeing it happen again with a new set up here and can't seem to get one to commit to the pile. Had the same thing happen last year, and when I pulled the cam the carcass got polished off. Little do they know that there is another cam about 6' up looking over the pile this time. The plan..., now that this one has there attention, is to pull this ground level cam and leave the other cam mounted high to see if they feel comfortable enough to feast when the WGI suddenly disappears. Anyhow, the highlight of todays pull was my first EVER fisher! Never seen one here. Never seen any tracks from one. Never got any trail cam pics of one. Looks like a fatty to me. Hoping to lure him back for some better quality pics. Blondie also brought her girlfriend back for a snack, lol. Glad I tied everything down.
  5. Cheaper to just buy.., and learn how to use a needle and thread! Even an unskilled seamstress like myself can do some crafty quilt work, and patch some pretty big ugly bullet holes. I threw last years yote on the carcass pile. BIG mistake IMO. Never saw, or got another trail cam pic of a yote over that site the rest of the season. Not sure if I blew it by killing one right over the pile or not, but throwing that skinned carcass on there did absolutely nothing to help me out on future hunts, that's for sure. Tracks in the snow in that area COMPLETELY disappeared there after, and that carcass layed there all through spring turkey season. I did see a woodpecker hammering away at the fat a few times, but other than that, nothing else touched it. From this point forward, they'll be buried or disposed of far away from hunting sets.
  6. I hear guys say that all the time, but the truth is that Bushnell is perfectly fine for what I'll be doing with this thing in the 100yd range so I'm not sure who's setting the standards. It's actually quite an improvement over what's on my ML right now and what's been on my slug guns for years. I don't see it becoming a major issue at the distances I'll be shooting, with the amount of light available, and the limited use it will receive. If I put 10 rounds through this gun every year at the range and in the field, that will be A LOT! It'll never be a deer hunting rig for me in this WMU so I'm content with the bargain glass for a few target shots at paper and predator opportunities that may arise post deer season. The odds of me shooting competitively, or long range on game, or trying to pick off leading AlQueida officials in Afghanistan are slim to none! Expensive glass on this rig for me would be like putting nitrous in my grocery getter.... just no need for it for what I'll be using it for. One other thing that has kept me away from rifles until now has been the high cost associated with their frequent use and customization. The last thing I want is for it to become a money pit for me now.
  7. I appreciate the input guys. Living in a shotgun only area for deer I've never really had much need for rifle knowledge until now. I doubt I'll get too deep into it, but I had a little fun getting it dialed in today from being bore sighted right out the box. Started out right at 100yds and was happy to see it was at least on paper but about 5" high and 2" to the right. I made an adjustment to bring it down for my next shot and got it pretty close. A little left for the next put me just about an inch low, so I brought it up a bit and was happy with the last two where they are a smidge high. I'm just shooting off my azz using my knee as a rest like I'll be doing while hunting with this thing so I'm not too worried about clovers and rainbows and all those other happy things you rifle rifle guys boast about, lol. Hopefully I'll get a crack at some yotes soon to see what they think of the new get up! For the record...... this was MUCH easier than sighting in my X-bow!
  8. Good observation..... I thought it may have been taking a dump, and could have went either way.
  9. First off, let me start by saying I've NEVER killed ANYTHING with a centerfire rifle in my life and have VERY minimal experience and knowledge of rifle calibers, performance, and ballistics. This year I acquired a new Savage Axis for coyotes, and for starters I have a box of Remington Express Core-Lokt 308 WIN 150gr. to put on paper. I haven't sighted it in yet, but planning to either later today or tomorrow. I'm curious what to expect out of this or similar combos on a yote or fox size animal. Effective range..? - Wont really be field hunting at all. Most access I have for this will be mature timber and ridges where shots will be between 50-150yds+/- MAX. Too close..? Pelt damage...? - Not a major concern to me , as I'll just be using the furs for personal crafting creations and nothing else. Just curious if I may be able to possibly salvage something that's not shot out for a wall hanger or if this is really overkill for something like that. Up until this point I've only killed yotes with 12ga. slugs and 50cal. ML so I can't imagine I'm in for any real suprises........ or am I? Better ammo options...? I'll have to look up any recommendations you guys may have pertaining to this thought, as it'll likely be all Greek to me. Anything else you all might find worth mentioning to this centerfire rifle newbie would also be appreciated. Just try to keep the terminology in Redneck Inglish so's I can comprehend. TIA
  10. They do this on TV all the time. It's gotta be quite a rush when you got that bad guy lined up in your hood ornament and feel your toes getting heavy! Good thing he didn't escape into the cover of a building. They would have had to blown it up "Bruce Willis" style. Next best option would have been the "Texas Heart Shot"..... it's usually not as deadly on thugs as it is on whitetail due to the location of the vitals and has minimal meat loss, lol
  11. Sweet- cute little nipple lickers! Congrats to the entire family!
  12. I decided to move some of my creekbottom pile today since I wasn't getting what I was after yet. Relocated to an area with heavy yote and fox traffic right now, so that's the shots I'll have coming next....... hopefully. Just a few shots to wrap up from where I had been running the cam. A few deer.., one fox.., some crow close-ups.., and a big fat hairy blonde!
  13. I've been out twice so far but haven't had any takers yet. My calls, time, and experience are pretty limited, but I make up for that with effort and determination! I use a rabbit, a howler, and my Torch when I'm feeling lazy. Seeing some good track sign around here now on the land I can hunt for both fox and yotes. I couldn't wait for the creek to freeze any longer so I packed up some carcass parts and pieces and delivered them today to an area that's seeing some k-9 traffic. I don't have much faith right now in calling one in with all the competition from the seasons unrecovered deer still laying around out here. I'll probably try to wait 'em out quietly over my own carcass early on until they get the woods cleaned up, and actually start hunting down their critter meals again. Threw a couple cams up over them again to see what's shakin' after dark since I'll only be out in the daylight. I checked two fox holes on the property today and both are showing pretty steady use as well with worn trails and dirty observation mounds in the snow. Both of them are out of sight of my set up, but well within hearing range of my calls, and scentable to my carcass for anything passing through. My neighbor told me today she heard a pack of yotes going CRAZY back there this morning. I didn't have the heart to tell her,lol....
  14. I can relate! "Like"..."Like"...."Like"....."Like".... "Like".... "Like"......
  15. Guess that's all that really matters sensitive fella, lol
  16. You gotta be shittin' me right...? A few posts ago you were telling us all what a skilled and dedicated bowhunter you are, and now you don't even know the most basic performance spec of your rig...? Poser alert...!
  17. I'll tell ya what. It would take one SICK and TWISTED individual to wipe out a pack of pups at a den sight, all in the name of a deer that will have a hard time crossing the street safely until next season. BUT, I have to admit I'm not really surprised by the despicable actions of some of todays "deer hunters".
  18. Good luck! I'll be keeping an eye on the classifieds for "Robs little black book" to go up for auction!
  19. Case closed! That was an easy one.
  20. Was really hoping to see a nice flint knapped primitive head in this thread...., not THAT piece of crap! Anyhow.., looks like it hit him right in the Spam roast with all that jelly on it,lol!
  21. Thanks for the B-day wishes everyone! Just put a few more miles on the hiking boots today looking for some antlers and taking pics. Not much luck with the sheds, but it sure was a nice day out there! Grabbed a few craft supplies while I was out and about and threw a cam up over him.
  22. Yeppers! And no crow in my area can possibly resist a tipped over garbage can on the side of the road. May be time to swap out the gut piles for a ripped open bag of dirty diapers, lol
  23. Funny this should pop up today. I've been trying to photograph a hawk over a gut pile/deer carcass for a few days now. Seems every time the crows start going bonkers, the hawk shows up. Not sure who is being attracted by who here, so I'm trying to call the crows for starters. I've been calling the crows with an electronic crow distress and owl call, and it worked like a charm....... THE 1'ST TIME! Had them all around me going nuts 20ft from the blind on my first sit and the hawk even showed up with the flock. After that first attempt, they just fly right on by now without getting too excited anymore. I think they got smart real quick after that and it's time for me to move my guts again. I have a trail camera over the carcass and they don't even visit it anymore when I'm not around to talk to them. My second sit in the blind I tossed a half eaten salami sandwich 10ft out the window. A few minutes later a crow swooped in to grab a free meal and split, lol The hawk hasn't been back either... I don't think I'm gonna be able to fool any of them here again for a while even with so many around. Challenging birds for sure once they get educated.
