Some interesting data on Mechanicals VS Fixed
moog5050 replied to Culvercreek hunt club's topic in Bow Hunting
Wait a minute, didn’t you kill one with the xbow at 59yds through the heart? I have a very vague recollection of you mentioning that once. -
Oil level is reasonably stable. I may add a bit every year. I will really have to take a closer look. I have been pretty lazy about maintaining that machine, unlike most machines I own. Growing up we beat the crap out of our lawn tractors with minimal maintenance and then bought a new one when they died every 10 years or so. I guess those bad habits have continued.

It does not appear that bow poundage or speed was factored in on the study. But there was a 7% increase. I suppose one should know whether they have the required equipment to use a mechanical. Kill em with whatever you like, but you do need to release an arrow! -

According to the study, about a 7% increase in recovery rate. -

Completely understood. My father still drives a Model T ford for the same reason. Just kidding Biz. -
Be sure to add a shelf below or next to the shooting window so that you don't miss any deer while watching TV - it requires skills in multitasking.

Heading off to Alex Bay. Sun and fish to catch - I hope. Thanks for covering my utility bill or we could not have gone! -
car battery, solar charger, inverter, inexpensive flat screen and a digital antenna. The boys will love it. lol

Forget all about mechanicals Mr. Culver Creek - you have a job to do with fixed heads, a stick and string! -
It runs strong Bryan. One of the reasons I have ignored the smoke.
-
Thanks guys

No biggie. I have not been very diligent about addressing it.
-
You think it’s the charcoal grill I run on the hood? Never considered that but a fresh burger is nice when cutting. Not giving it up.
-
Not over full. Didn’t check air filter. Maybe that’s a good place to start.
-
My tractor seems to be puffing smoke occasionally. More of a dark gray smoke than white or blue. Some days worse than others. Doesn’t seem normal but has run like this for over a year, maybe 2 to 3. No oil consumption. My son complains about the smoke. I tell him to ignore it but probably not wise. Thoughts? I am not a mechanic but May have to find someone to look at it after this year. I haven’t done anything because it just keeps going. It’s a 46” 22hp Troy Bilt. Maybe 8 years old.

That buck is on steroids - time for a random drug test!

I remember shooting 50yds with the recurve. I didn't lose any arrows, but hitting the block was an iffy proposition. I suspect it would be the same at 100 with a compound.
-
You mean everyone started with 29 arrows?
-
Agreed. One can only tune within the range of their consistency. The better you shoot, the more reliably you can tune.

Says the guy that spent 95% of his working time sleeping or eating! I will give you that the other 5% was real work! -
Or you can hunt private next to public where every season I have joggers or walkers stroll by within bow range as they veer off course and pay no attention to the posted signs. I am always amused at how startled they are when I politely ask them from my tree stand to head in the other direction. That said, I like my private parcels. Best of all, you can pre-arrange entry, exit and stand locations.

Phew - I guess I can now cancel my amazon order. Did not want to be out of hunting fashion. -

I thought you had to be special forces or over 80 years old to wear a bucket hat? -
I have spent far more time than I care to admit tuning both compounds and trad bows. Good enough is usually good enough (unless you are obsessive like me) but 3-6" difference between BH (any BH) and FP at 20yds is not near good enough IMO. Definitely losing energy there. Walk back tuning is the easiest for most people.
