wow this should be fun... because a trophy hunter i think often gets misconstrued as well. i think a meat hunter can come in the form of a many facets as does a trophy hunter. i think most meat hunters do fall into the category of its brown its down, i mean their not hunting mature deer to fill a freezer otherwise they may go hungry. i dont think many deer get passed when it comes to a meat hunter. filling a freezer is whats important and i get that. i think when it comes to a trophy hunter guys often say well this guys just after the antlers. but they tend to over look the bar a trophy hunter may have set for them self, a standard so to speak. it may not be all about harvesting a deer with a big rack but maybe harvesting a mature deer, 3.5/4.5 or better or even a 120" or better. what ever the case, as we continue to hunt we evolve as hunters, some fill a freezer and some take on the challenge and take the path of raising their own bar and pass deer others may not. i got into this discussion with my dad on the way upstate while i was doing an engineer inspection. My dad is a meat hunter, he fills his freezer every chance he gets. which often results in hardly any deer walking away from his stand without an arrow in it unless he does not have a shot. thats just not me, i can fill my freezer very easily and i do every year but i tend to be picky on what goes in it. to each his own i say, the trophy or deer worth going into the freezer is in the eye of the hunter.

i never said those deer were studs but a 1.5 year old * c'mon, that deer has some great genetics. the first deer is def 2.5 and if he makes it to 3.5 he will be a stud

thats a nice bull! congrats

welcome to the site! what you were nailing down earlier in the year appear to be his summer patterns, he may have been holding up there for awhile but like culver said, as we get closer to the rut those patterns will change. his needs and wants will be different now as apposed to what they were a month ago. i would try and hone in on an area depending on how much land you have to hunt but hone in on where you see mature doe bedding or any doe bedding on your property if you dont happen to have an area as such. hes going to be looking for where those doe are keeping and he will stick in and around there waiting for the time to come OR he may have moved off to a property or area that does have that situation. he may even be making his way around checking multiple bedding areas to see which doe may be the closest to coming into heat. but as of right now try and hone in on those areas. when that rut comes or close to that there really is no rhyme or reason for the most part. and yes he looks 2.5 to me as well good luck

my cam has a ton of deer on it and its mid 60s. deer move in all weather, you have to be in your stand to kill them. just pulled my cam and yesterday was the first day i finally have pics from all day deer activity with multiple bucks in day light hours and yesterday was mid 60s.

What are You Going to Be for Halloween?

Lol! Like the blue oyster in police academy Funny story, me and my best friend went to Aruba one year. This was like our second or 3rd night and had a routine of about 15 differnt bars, clubs and hotels we went in every night to get drinks. When we worked our way down into town we stopped in at the paddock. A totally straight bar we went to the night before. Well we were already completly buzzed up and it was my turn for the rounds, I ran to the bar taking note to nothing else but our drinks. I order 6 vodka 7s 2 for each of us. While ordering my buddy is like genooo, gennooo wait, I'm like dave I know what your drinking hang on. I get the drinks and hand them off and they are both looking at me and say take a look around. I look around, it's raining men is on, guys dancing from the poles in underwear. Boy you wanna see 3 guys down 2 drinks each in a hurry lmao. We went by the next night and it was a regular night. I guess it was gay night that night lol Nothing against them, one of best freinds was gay. But going in with a club full of dudes checking ya out is no fun lol. Now I know how girls feel at a bar when 97 guys are checking them out -

depending on how close he is you want the HIT him high lung...aiming maybe different depending on your setup. take a few shots to confirm what you have to do. good luck bud, hope he comes out for you again
-
i keep looking at it and keep coming up with a 2.5
-
sorry to hear that bud, it happens tho...

he said he was 30 feet up, thats high in a tree and honestly that how high you want to hit him at the height... that deer could have rolled on the arrow so its heard to tell the position of the deer. BUT, if i were to guess id say almost perfectly broadside or maybe slight q-way (just slight). at 15-20 feet you wanna hit em maybe 2" lower then that to take out both lungs and come out low. you hit em in the middle or slightly lower and the mortality changes fast.
-
no offence first light, if you were using your 10 yard pin and aiming low on top of that, your were doomed right out of the gate. if you held higher on him with that pin even with the slight quarter to, it may have come together. you live and you learn. hop in your stand and try that pin holding right on like i told elmo. see where your hitting...

but you guys have to do what works for you BUT you have to try and practice that shot to know that. i happen to have a: • tree stand pin 5-15 yards • 20-35 yard or so • and 35 out (3 pins) i think 10 yard pins are funny to me. who needs a 10 yard pin? with most bows your talking about not even an inch difference. slower older bows maybe a tad more. but an inch at 10 yards is still killing them quick if the shot is placed right. that 10 yard pin some have might be perfectly setup for close range shots in the tree stand holding dead on or you might have to tweak it after a few shots but that pin takes the guess work "oh i use my 20 yard and aim high / low" one pin, one shot one less thing to worry about and it will allow you to focus more on the animal and anything else you have to such as brush in your way and so on. if you have to worry about how close or far he is and where you have to aim high/low with your 20 then good luck. if it works for you tho, use it. if you want to try something easier, alls im doing is providing and idea that works. ive killed many deer under 10 and when you do they go down faster then any other deer ive shot and BLOOD IMMEDIATELY every time without fail.... i prefer those chip shot shots because they truly are chip shots for me and knowing where to slide that arrow in is key. just wish they would all come in close lol
-
for a extremely close range shot like that from 15 feet or more, i would.... anything 15 yards or out you can use your 20 yard pin and shouldn't have any issues at all otherwise it would be on the hunter. but as far as gear, yes a pin above your 20 for shots under 15 yards would work wonders. try it tho, take arrow with a field point in your stand, when things are slow pick a leaf that sticks out and use your 10 yard pin and take a shot at 8-10 and see what happens. should be right there with your 20 you will be high
-
we have some rain coming weds i think, i may slip in to do a quick prune job to have a few more shot ops. its thick where i am and dont have a lot of options but i do see other patterns the deer have been taking passed my stand that i didnt see them taking until putting in some seat time in this new tree. so i want to do it now rather then have that one big one come in through one of the spots giving me no shot. just want to be ready... then i think i am going to get in for a hunt friday
-
just some insight, a 5 yard shot at 15 feet, i personally would hold high lung to top of the the lung and come out somewhere where the pit is on the off side. thats how low the arrow would exit. not critiquing, just giving you some insight. when they say shot placement is key, its all distances especially the close ones. knowing the path your arrow is going to take is something you have to imagine in your head. those shot simulators are good educating tools
-
well then theres the rest of the story no that wont work... think about the ANGLE you were aiming LOW to begin with with a 10 yard pin, essentially that pin should suffice and act like my tree stand pin. you want the point of entry HIGHER. 15 feet at 5 yards if you hit high will exit out so low, A LOT LOWER then you think. so you just answered it for yourself. you hit probably low with your 10 yard pin right where you were aiming the arrow came out almost immediately causing no trauma, hence why you have a lot of fat from that area and no blood. thats MY HONEST OPINION. that deer is alive i bet if you set a cam up and he is sticking around you will see it.

doesnt look they would be
