Large food plot suggestions.
zeus1gdsm replied to zeus1gdsm's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Soybeans seems possible we have a small herd in our area. But the neighbors managed to take 2 6's and our 5pt and doe... We have at least 10doe on the property itself... In the southern half of this picture you can see the ag fields south of our property the deer bed in our property and move south to these ag fields. To feed. Due to the ag fields my hope is that the beans may last. In fact another property I hunt had 2 acres of beans still standing 1st week of November and it's just a mile or 2 from my property. So beans may just have a chance. Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk -

Another note. Is that due to the field being visible from 2 major roads we are going to have to plant a plot screen to provide some privacy for the deer as well as prevent road shootings. Trying to decide between a plot screen product such as from frigid forage or just use corn. Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk -

Another example of the thickness. you can see the clover plot in the back. And another showing the far side of the property which becomes very wet and is only used as a travel corridor... I'm the far background you can see the fallow field I speak of where there are huge bedding areas and is the majority of the property. Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk -
On the property I hunt. We decided to do two major projects as soon as the season is over... 1) is to clear out all the undergrowth of a section of the property the deer move through while going from bedding out to a food source not on our property. It currently looks like this: plan is to clear out everything under 6foot. As well as any trees under 4inches in diameter. The hope is this will help the abundance of crab trees produce more fruit. As well as throw out some random small strips of plot to bring them through. And then allow longer sight range for us. And get the deer off of our trails on be able to move more naturally through this section. We also have a small kill plot of clover in this wooded area. Hope is to get a ground blind in with viewing up to 100 yards. As opposed to only 20-30 right now. 2) is to clear at least an acre strip of the scrub field that is over 80% of the property. And plant a plot as well as put up 2 raised ground blinds to account for the typical winds. The property is 60 acres and we only hunt about 11 of them as the rest is fallow field with no trees and scrub that is head high. We have a small kill plot that is clover however it couldn't handle the pressure and was no longer drawing deer halfway through October. And it is inside the woods we plan on clearing out. I'm trying to decide if I should plant beans or brassica in the acre field plot to provide forage throughout the entire season. So beans or brassica? My thinking is brassica for late season forage. And a larger plot will take some pressure off the clover. Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk

Very interested in reports on those kamiks pap. I have some at a local store but not at that price. Don't like that they don't rate the insulation in grams. However that olive pair looks good Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk -
I'm not an expert. But my first thought was porcupine. Based on porcupine damage I've seen on a camp I used to rent. And lean to in the adks Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk

Noone ribbing ya man. Eventually it's possible that one of the possible Mt lion pics will end up being a cougar. Never know. I'm mean heck I had about 5 different moose in oneida/Herkimer County over the last few years. Never would have thought that would happen. Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk

I picked up Itasca 2000g thinsulate rubbers... good down to 30 without toe warmers. And one pair wool socks... Toe warmers get me down to 15. But keep in mind this is with a short non sweaty walk Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk

I just successfully butchered my first deer. Last year I used a processor. And I gotta say I'll be doing it myself from now on. But what to do with the hide and head? I'm thinking a European mount for the buck since it is my first one. Debating on the boil or the bury method. Is it too late to bury due to the snow? I'm thinking of tanning the hide. It would be tail, rear thighs and front legs and 1/4a neck. Looks like I can pressure wash the fish off then it's just a salting process followed by a tanning formula... Has anyone tanned their own hide before? Is it soft enough when all done to use on the back of a couch? More trouble than its worth? Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk

Got out 45 minutes before sunrise... Sitting a stand... As it got light out I kept telling myself I was gonna get a deer. ( I do this every trip) With the blue bird skies. Little to no wind and a crisp 25* it felt right. My buddies dog came out tracking me and went back inside. At 830 I finally saw deer. A doe came out. My target doe all year. I was waiting for a shot and a buck came out behind her... They chased each other for a minute and ended up back at 30 yards. I opted to shoot the buck so the doe can breed. And I've never gotten a buck. Well in my haste I didn't lock the gun up tight and the first shot my scope bit me. No big deal. I went to load again in an effort to take the doe as well and had a fte.... Took a minute of fueling with the mag to get reloaded.... Doe was gone... Buck had moved into a thicket... I couldn't see blood anywhere..... So after last year's experience of not taking a second shot. I put another round into him. He again walked a few steps and stood there. He was shaking. He walked out of view. I waited 20 minutes and went down to the first shot to check blood.... None found. 2nd shot. No blood. Started tracking to last visual... Looked up and he was bedded down about 20 feet away. Head up. Breathing labored. I was in awe. My first time being this close to a live deer hunting.... I shot him again through the heart... I stayed with him as he expired. I said a word and thanked him for experience and the nourishment for my family..... I don't know if he qualify as a 6. But he is at least a 5pt. Correct me if I'm wrong please. I'm not happy with my shots. Another learning experience. I hunt for meat not horns. And save the big bucks for my buddy the property owner. Go easy on me.
