Wearing headphones and situational awareness
Nomad replied to Culvercreek hunt club's topic in General Chit Chat
We were in FLA. at a park walking our dog me the wife and her sister , it’s a long road leading into, park ,with two roads off it that go,into, the park . We’re walking facing traffic ,( basically none ) from behind I hear a car ,I turn and see a white car slowing like it wants to, turn right ,but not sure. Another car is coming fast behind it, so,I know it’ll go around white car ,which would put it close to my SIL on our side of road from behind her . I yell “ watch out,” she says “ what?” I repeat ,” watch out “, she repeats , “ what ?” Zoom car flys by , she jumps ...... Perhaps I should have yelled “ Car ?” She never heard the car,or reacted to my two warnings . -
Wearing headphones and situational awareness
Nomad replied to Culvercreek hunt club's topic in General Chit Chat
Weeks ago I thought of starting a thread on situational awareness, so,let’s go . I like to think I’m very aware and respond according , Ive wondered if it was a male/female thing or Hunter / non Hunter or each . As hunters we stare looking for the slightest movement or something out of place , our ears listening for the slightest sound does this carry over in other parts of our lives ? One of the parts of the written exam for the FD, was you studied two, photos for one minute , turned them over placed onthe floor ,then you could open the packet and answer questions about said photos. Many made the mistake of thinking they’d ask “ fire “ questions , where are exits, the hydrant, fire escape and so on . What you got was ,which store was closed on Sat .? Which shop had an air conditioner over the door , how many people were on the sidewalk ? They wanted to know , if you pull up had a brief time to do a size up how well you could recall what you saw . It was a very telling part of the test , and still used 30 plus years after I took it . Two things I always drilled into my kids ,we’re knowing exits ( and ignore emergency exit only ) and watch for people paying to much attention to them or to little . Venues that collect tickets or $, tend to have one entrance, and everyone shuffles along towards it when leaving, when you can leave in any exit door, in emergency’s people make that fatal mistake as well . Look at the Great White tragedy, people waited to long and then went to the front door to die ,like a cork stuck in a bottle . -
I’ve mentioned this before , I have a screen shot of my spot with the stands numbered , tell the Mrs. which one I’ll be in, text her when I’m back at Truck . If I fail to text she’ll call, no answer ,in a week or maybe two she’ll send help , depending if there’s any bugs in the house that need killing or a laundry basket to carry downstairs.

Sirius came with a new car for idk 3 or 6 months, never continued with it once they wanted me to pay, Pandora I use the free one, and Iheart radio . Cut cable ,use antenna ,along with Netflix and Hulu , neither of which I pay for . Dropped the newspaper, called the garbage folks to see if I could get every two week pick up as we don’t come close to filling it weekly , nope .But saved 10% for being old and another 10% for paying a year in advance. Got a friend running quotes for our insurance, cars, home and umbrella. save 20% of cell bill for being Gov. employee ( sorry ...) that’ll end once they make me show paycheck again in a year or two . Can get hotel rooms close to half off with my ID too .

But your point is spot on , situational awareness is already low on most people , headphones and constant staring at smart phones takes it down even lower . -
Lunch with a friend in Penfield . K2 Red Ale, pretty good .

5 yards of mulch ,that’s a warm up, I get 14 yards ,get it spread in a day, edging the 300 feet or so of inlayed brick around it all is what really sucks .

Concealed Carry in Onondaga County
Nomad replied to boo711's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
Wow that really sucks . Would like to know how he’d learn of a speeding ticket , I can’t believe dmv records are crossed linked to county permit office , who, would then notify the judge ? Anyways congrats on getting “ full” carry . -
60 y/o, I’ve bought one new mower in my life , never sharpened a blade , and never knew you could change the oil ,I do check it a couple times a year and add whatever is in the garage Marine to 5w20 .

Actually it’s fairly common. My AR I set up, like that , back up flip up iron sights ( Magpul ) that are easy to see and shoot through the red dot . Some co- witness them ,that is the red dot is set to be right on the top,of front iron sight . Mine stay down , just buis ,if red dot fails .

Just carry regardless of any “ restrictions .” It’s administrative only , your not violating any law . The worst that could happen is if the judge somehow found out ,he revokes your permit . So now you can’t carry a gun you could not carry anyway..... -
I’m a big fan of Genny Bock .

You guys do realize there was much more then “ beams” there right ? I haven’t heard anyone say the beams were the first material ignited . There was wooden plank walkways, railings , smaller dimensional lumber all over ,as well as storage of materials up there . Once that gets going first the beams will, no matter the ignition source . Construction or rehab, always increases the chance of fire , they bring in heaters, welders ,torches ,flammable liquids, boxes of materials, lumber, sawdust , the list is endless . We as a matter of normal procedure paid them special attention . Guys think an “ accelerant “ most have been used, first off it would be correct to say hydrocarbon instead, as accelerant implies malice and intent ,which is not proven with just the presence of a hydrocarbon . While were on that subject I’ve seen many “ pours “ where a hydrocarbon was poured on the hardwood floor of a vacant house , and it never took off .. Pouring on a large hard surface can lead to,the liquid burning off and not starting the floor or structure on fire . So either arson or accidental, it would have most likely started with much smaller material like most other fires . imho

Actually I have two, royal pita . Push as hard as my little hands can, and it loads 6 rounds of 10 . Probably due to the spring again . Package on the way, problem will be moot shortly .
-
No plan to tote it in the deer woods . After I got a call from the makers , we had a nice chat, and he gave me some instructions on what I could do if I moved to a free state . I much prefer to load up a stack of mags at my leisure, and bring them when I shoot, over this top loading at my range .
-
Makes sense .
-
Spring tension makes sense, it’s hard to even close upper with ten loaded . I left it loaded with ten rounds, to see if that would compress it a bit , no luck . I emailed maker but they’re closed today . Mag can’t come out with out power tools, I cloud swap springs, perhaps I can get them to send me one .
-
So I got my first AR, really enjoy shooting it ,however there is one issue I can’t figure out . It has a ten round magazine that is “ locked in place “, so I have to top load it, if I load ten rounds I can’t pull back the charging handle ,it doesn’t move at all, if I remove one round ,close the gun it charges with ease . Fires fine not one issue with feeding or ejection . Ideas ? thanks
