  1. Bring a rake . I did this spur path after a morning sit , it runs from my main 4 foot wide path up to a stand . There’s nothing but sticks on the ground there it’s blanketed with them , I raked it about as fast as I walked . On the way down I move larger ones along the side like a curb ,makes it easy to follow in the dark . When leaves drop I use a backpack blower to really clear things .I make as much noise walking in as walking on my yard , you can also see the size and direction of deer tracks , some start walking it almost immediately.
  2. Good move , that way he gets a free hunting lic. Happy birthday .
  3. I generally just look online at the local news stations, ten day . Right now I’m resting my shoulders a few days, then bringing the camper in for work one day ,a dentist app. another , a promotional party one day that starts at noon, next Sunday it’s the Bills game at our daughters . So I look for the open days that aren’t to windy or wet . Other times it’s Robs method , I walk outside in the morning, to windy or wet, I walk back in .
  4. Thanks and I see I’m not alone ! I was devastated when I couldn’t draw again . Time will,tell .
  5. That’s good strategy, look like you’re for it while , giving them the full moon to hamper success , thus preserving deer for bow .
  6. My buddy saw 16 Friday and 7 yesterday , said his cameras have been going crazy last few days , he’s going today ,we’ll see . My neighbor is a young deputy, sounds like he puts down a lot of deer . Also this year he’s starting bow hunting , and never gun hunted , I’m taking him next week , should be interesting.
  7. Thanks . We’ll see , today I was in a hang on for the first time in years, and thinking back I was kinda hunched forward ,probably why my fingers started to tingle . I’ll try my big ladders with big seats ,foot rests, arm rests ,and I’ll try to have good posture like mom always said .
  8. Well this could be my last season of bow hunting , been doing it since 1988 . Bad shoulders for years but I deal with it . Now a few years back I could no longer draw my bow . I got a crossbow so I could at least get those two weeks , then I found a bow I could draw and all was good for 3/4 more years till today . Shoulders of course hurt, they do most days ,fingers tingle even , but today while sitting I decided to see if I could draw and clear some branches ,it took all I had to get it back ,then two hours later , prior to getting down I stood up to shoot a field point like I always do before getting down and I could not pull the string back . This is just how it went before ,I could shoot in my yard standing ,warm etc , but after sitting and if it’s cold that’s all it took to tip the scale . Soon if the pattern continues I won’t be able to draw at all under any conditions. Im trying to knock the inflammation down , and will do my stretching , maybe hunt just warm afternoons , I only have to sit an hour then , but I hate coming back the next day … So that’s it ,quite frankly I was shocked , speechless and pissed when I couldn’t draw today . Here we go again , time to dust off the xbow .
  9. Apparently none I didn’t know there would be showers this morning .
  10. Couple bucks and 8000 turkey so far. youth weekend ? That explains the two single shots awhile back . ever have one of those mornings where you do so many things wrong you think just go home ?
  11. I have both a headlamp and a very bright hand light with me . Seldom use them walking in or out in bow ,there are no other hunters . Most of my walks are along field edges or mowed paths . The times I go through the woods, it’s on a four foot wide dirt path I made ,occasionally I’ll shine it to,light up the tacks on a few tricky spots where there’s undergrowth obscuring the path . im bring my rake today to clean the path up a bit after my sit ,if I’m not ofter wise dragging a buck out . Later after leaf drop , I’ll weed whack it and go over it with my backpack leaf blower .
  12. When we went round and round on this years ago, it seemed to be largely an East Vs West parts of the state on how the DEC officers think the law is . We have one that hunts the farm and I would meet yearly with another that patrols the area , here you certainly can walk in and out in the dark with your gun loaded, and I guess arrow nocked but I never asked them that . Thats the answer from them to my direct question , one said you could be coyote hunting . He also wrote one guy he watched after hours walking out , stopping turning looking around , he asked him what that was for ? He SAID you never know when a deer comes by ….. Myself in the morning I put in the box mag, then quietly chamber a round up on stand , walking out in the dark in generally unload once I clear the fields where it still light enough and legal .
  13. Nope wind and rain here . Tomorrow AM , then we’ll see, I too wasn’t going to hunt much early, now I’ve got a solid buck patterned.
  14. Guys finishing off deer with hockey sticks, mag lites, knives and choke holds. You owe the deer better . A .22 in the ear , no visible wound, and quick finish , stick gun back in boot and carry on . Post for entertainment purposes only .
  15. I’m so sorry to hear that, I hesitated on posting the discretion of hangings , because you just don’t know what those reading may have dealt with . One of my worst calls was cpr on an infant, the mother pounded her fists on my back screaming for me to save her baby , which I knew wasn’t going to happen . my guns are all, locked up and the one wall hanger that I don’t even have ammo for, gets put away if kids are visiting, which is rare .
  16. I don’t know the stats , but I’ve been to a fair number of suicides but none by gun . I was surprised at first by the number who hung themselves ,that’s actually pretty gruesome neck stretches ,lips and tongue purple and bloated . Pills and booze is up,there as well, one lady took pills and half a bottle of Wild Turkey , we found her standing in a bathtub of water holding a plugged in radio ,wearing her girdle . I ripped the cord out of the wall and we grabbed her. Jumpers seem to be the number one way , my crew got a couple of those to not jump ,at least that day . Jumpers are a daily call .
  17. I gave into peer pressure and just hung my only hang on where that Buck has moved through . It was a good reminder of why I sold my climber and all other hang ons , what a pain . Took me three times longer then it used to, many trips up and down with all the sticks , locks, haul line setting up,life line which btw I put the lock cable over so I couldn’t get back down with out undoing it . And man that platform is small … Its set so my back is to where he comes from , that way he’ll pass my left and all I need to do,is raise the bow and draw , plus the trunk gives me some cover . So I’m sure he won’t walk that path a third morning now . oh I also made a new face mask for the tree .
  18. Same stand as one you helped me track . 40 yards to left of it same as that other buck . I may hang my LW tomorrow late morning , I’m not as agile anymore, stepping off sticks with a bad hip is a risk . not much cover too, they’re mostly phone pole trees he walks down the slope would it be better to be on top or Below ? Below has cover
  19. I have one hang on left with sticks , it’s home , so it’s not going up today . Perhaps I’ll bring it next time , but sit in back stand and see just where he’s coming from ,then hang it if need be . Blue dot was 40 yards from him that’s not a shot i take Edit : hanging it in tomorrows rain is a good idea ,I know where he walks over here . im not much of a small hang on guy anymore though …
  20. So he’s taken the exact route both times I’ve watched him this week , that yellow line . I could use this stand blue dot and hope he come by 20 yards closer . or if you follow the line left it points towards my “ back “ stand it’s real thick behind it open woods in front . Not sure if he comes straight through the woods from the back or enters from a side then straight down . or after I get down I have a ladder stand I could put on his path near where I’ve seen him , that’s a bit of work and noise and although I’ve always put ladder stands up alone it’s getting harder . help !
  21. Same nice 8 just came through as two mornings ago ! Same darn path , and 8:20 last time was 7:30 . Im in a different stand so closer but still a good 40 yards which is way more then I shoot . Either I put my lone wolf hang on , on that route , or try the stand straight back 100 yards and see if he comes straight through from the back .
  22. Turkeys all around me, a few flew down pretty close . Awhile ago I looked straight ahead and there was light brown that wasn’t there before ! it was a stand off ,then slowly I reached for my binoculars… it was a ray of sunshine that made its way through the canopy and was lighting up part of a tree trunk a ways off
