Man, I've gotta tell the wife that I can't deliver her jewelry anymore. Take a couple of hours away and all h*77 breaks loose. I think things have gotten a bit fuzzy regarding what started this whole diatribe. The hypothetical was put forth asking if multishot volleys were potentially caused by the inaccuracies of slug guns and how in the northern zone that possibly didn't happen as much as it did in the southern zone because the NZ folks use rifles. - That's a paraphrase but I think it relates the idear... So I took a bit of exception to that and said that at 100 yards or less my shotgun was as accurate as any rifle. I stand by that statement. No one said that a rifle wasn't better at distance. If I were going back to Maine where 200 yard shots are common place, I'd grab one of my rifles - no doubt about it. Edit: I probably should have stated what was implied, and that is that what was being discussed is a hunting situation. I think you're reading WAY too much into things pistolo71. I skimmed this afternoons happenings... did anyone figure out what the h*77 the sandwich was?

You're right and I apologize. That really would be an interesting thing to do without telling anyone that they were being watched. I'd do it but we have no public ranges around this area. We shoot at a range we have setup on a guys farm. pistolp: I have no need to keep my targets so I have none, next time I go I'll let you know but it'll be a while. My target will look just like yours. Well, with the exception of it being a Shoot-n-see.

My setup WILL put them in the same hole at 100 yards, period. If you don't believe that, your call. As indicated earlier, it would be a larger hole than a rifle would make just due to the shear size of the projectile, but a single hole in any event. Trust me, you'd lose. (assuming of course I didn't have a twitch or some chit like that)

Anytime. My setup will put 'em in the same hole at 100 edit: albeit a bigger hole.

lol - sorry ncountry - just a phrase I use sometimes - glad you didn't take it personally as I forgot the I'm from PW PA, born and raised in rifle country. Shotguns were only for birds or skeet. Having moved to NY (Dutchess County) I had to get acquainted with slugs and slug guns. It doesn't take much research or mental exercise to realize that smooth bores are about as accurate as a statement made by a politician. Slightly more research will uncover that the additions of a cantilevered, rifled barrel with a good scope will provide the capability of accuracy. I said the capability because then it comes down to the process of finding out which brand of ammo and what style your particular setup "likes". It's a bit of a process but can be done and quite good accuracy can be achieved. I think the problem lies in that way too many aren't educated in the ways of the outdoors. The whys and why nots. And as such they are just interested in achieving their goal as soon as they possibly can and with the least amount of effort. Close is good enough and just keep firing until it drops. I've heard so many 5 shot volleys that it just boggles my mind. p.s. no attack was meant

yep, too many people don't realize that a deer doesn't see anything like we do. That's why I just shake my head about the obsession of having to blend into the surroundings without being seen. Most people strive to be invisible to people, not deer. BIG difference! Deer see nothing like we do yet everyone bases their hunting attire based in the assumption that we see alike. "well my buddy can see me so a deer can too", and visa versa. Wrong. Like night and day (pun intended. ) I wear blaze orange camo head to foot and from my experience and research, I'd bet money that a deer doesn't see me quicker or easier than someone in camo that makes them "invisible" to humans. I've long maintained that the whole invi-camo thing was generated by companies to get $ out of peoples pockets, and it's worked. It is important to watch what colors you wear as the article points out, but the main things from a visual aspect to avoid detection is to break up your image and either stay still or move PAINFULLY slow. The whole camo thing is a very well played advertizing success.

WHOA there Skippy. Now I understand that rifles can reach out a touch someone a lot further than a shotgun but I'll put my 12ga mossy 500 up against any rifle that you'd like out to at least 100 yards. The problem is not the equipment it's the attitude and skills of the person behind the stock.

just to toss another angle into the mix, who confirmed that it wasn't actually a doe?

I was impressed when I read the subject - until I saw a guy did it...

freekin' youngin's...

Yep, the nuts are why I didn't even set foot into the woods this year. No place to safely hunt. Most of the idiots down this way don't put safety #1 and forget about being concerned about encroaching on others - that doesn't even come into play. The standard thought process now adays seems to be "I'm staying here, you don't like it? GTFO" Kind of goes with todays "me" philosophy.

Bribe the management.

Except for skinning, I use my kitchen knives (which includes a boning knife) Henckels Professional S knives.

Congrats on both! My wife doesn't wanna know anything about it until I get it cutup, cooked and on her plate. ;-) But I'm the cook so I guess that's "normal" but cut it up? No way... she'd take it to a processor.

Well I'll be dang, that's news to me I'll check it out - thanks!

Maybe if you have a smartphone. Don't have one, don't want one. My cell phone is a phone, period.

I just paid 3.67 in Poughkeepsie for 87 oct. Here's something you can play around with: http://www.newyorkstategasprices.com/index.aspx?area=Poughkeepsie

Yeah, everybody I know who has TWC shoved down their throats have nothing good to say about it. The only thing I had against Optimum was the price.
-
Another vote for Fios. We've had DirecTV and it was ok as long as it didn't rain or snow. Then we'd lose signal, and being in Poughkeepsie, it's not like we're under a canopy or anything. But we had to have different internet and phone providers at the time. That may of changed but I'd be very leary of latency issues of internet service through satellite. From DirecTV we went with Optimum online and were very pleased with them until Fios came along and we got the same or better (faster internet) service for quite a bit less money than Optimum. As for NFL Sunday Ticket, every NFL game is streamed over the internet these days. I watch the Steelers every time they play. Another option is just to sign up for internet service and use Hulu, Netflix, Amazon, OTA antennae, etc for your TV. That's becoming more and more popular.

Urban legend deer situation. What would you do?
bluecoupe replied to Al Bundy's topic in Deer Hunting
Doc, I think the difference in the discussions (and I coitenly could be wrong) is that in one case there is a wounded animal that it's whereabouts is unknown and in the other situation, the wounded animal is in sight at close range. Two totally different scenarios. -
It doesn't surprise me that it's fake but that someone would even think suck a think is just beyond belief. Rape victims should be granted the opportunity to shoot their attackers in the "jewels" if they choose to.
-
Yeah, I didn't realize that it was old when I posted it. I didn't think to look at that <blush> See, ARs are bad and cause the unnecessary death of bucks. All ARs should be repealed and let people shoot what they choose. (makes just about as much sense as the other viewpoints, deer have survived for centuries and will continue to do so based upon what the environment will support)

Been there - you're gonna like it if it's stayed the same. Watch out for the little birds though, they love drinks that have booze in 'em. Have a blast

But that's not the same scenario. In the cases you are talking about the shooter has no clue where the deer is and in the scenarios being put forth in this thread, they can see the wounded animal. Totally different hypotheticals.
