There was absolutely no emotion in what I just wrote...AND it has yet to be established I accidentally did ANYTHING illegal ...Now had I gone out and shot a deer with a cross bow...most certainly... EVEN if I had thought about shooting a deer with the crossbow NO definitely not...for there was no dead deer... This is no different than carrying a shotgun and a compound to turkey hunt at the same time...I could legally shoot a deer with that compound I could not with the shot gun , If I thought about it it's still not illegal until there is a dead deer.
-
BTW I don't know why it took me so long to point this out again ...but let me address this directly and in detail: I can hunt turkey with a compound bow and I can hunt deer with a compoud bow...you can not question that. I can NOT hunt deer with my 20ga modified choked shot gun I can hunt turkey with my 20 ga modified choke shot gun during fall season that overlaps bow season. So I am allowed to carry BOTH weapns into the field...Wonder why I said specifically modified choke? Because as easilly as I could kill a deer with a cross bow..I could slip in a slug and kill a deer...IF I were going to do some thing illegal ...Yet they are allowed to be carried at the same time..

No what you are not getting is this: They then wrote back: The DEC is having a time figuring out where to find written legalities about it...So no matter what the out come This has shown that written rules actually do count and "because so and so says" ,a least shouldn't. They need to get their act together and start writing clear and concise regulations. Now because I do read a lot I can tell you that even though some other states have lengthy rule books they are rather detailed in what they do and don't expect and it's out there for the hunters to read...DEC having to search for their own regulations and expecting the general hunting population to stay legal ..come on! DEC official saying not all regulations are inthe regulation book? I'm sorry this happens to be an important one...lol

PS here is what my line of think was and is I am in possession of two legal tags during two legal seasons. I want to make the most of my time in the blind, obviously no way could I fit me and both weapons in a cheap ladder stand ,I don't use bow holders. Turkey are a small target with a smaller kill zone so I wanted to use my best weapon for the turkey and for me that would be either a shot gun BTW shot GUNS legal in the fall bow hunting season woods for turkey, or a xbow...I will not use a gun in the woods during bow season...that's why I wait to squirrel hunt.

That is the crutch of it Culver...though I find it funny some think I was trying to do something shady...If I were going to do something shady I would not walk through the woods in the dark (at closing in on 60) "lugging" a compound in one had a hip quiver with 2 arrows and 3 bolts, one with a field point. Plus a crossbow over my back and a fanny pack. Now if I were that type of person I would head out in the dark with a crossbow legal, and if I were that type shoot a deer...walk away with the crossbow go home switch up and drag the deer out. If nothing else..I am a proficient person when it comes to thinking things out..I WOULD NOT POST PICS OF BOTH WEAPONS...LOL

OK So didn't quit pick up on that..lets try again Yes it was the question and it was a 30 min or so conversation, probably longer where I told them the EXACT reason I was asking that per the book and lack of anything contrary I had carried both..I stated that I am very proficient with the compound but a pie plate target on a deer is very very different than a base ball sized target on a turkey at 30 yards. I have both licenses both seasons are open both implements are legal but it was questioned and I did extensive searches and there is absolutely nothing stating in writing that it is not legal.
-
PS If the DEC had any ...hhhmmm common sense they would have this entire thread copied and thoroughly reviewed, no matter what the out come of my inquiry ,for any future regulations to be written. If this is not a lesson in how hunters interpret what is written I do not know what would be.

Not so simple which is why the DEC wrote the above. Now I specifically asked is it legal to carry a cross bow into the woods to hunt turkey small game and coyote with a cross bow during their open seasons,"YES", I asked even though they are open now during bow season, "yes" Is it legal to carry 2 weapons in the field to hunt 2 different species..." yes as long as the weapon is legal for both species." Now here is where the conversation went on a search : I will need written law stating that...hesitation...It is no where in the book. " Well not all thr regulations are in the book it must be in the written laws and I will need to search". Now per the regulation book: note only crossbow stipulation is northern zone ,specifically with dogs. this is for turkey: now small game and coyotes : Note ,the only stipulation is northern zone with dogs: But if you go read the regs there are all kinds of actual firearm regulations/restrictions, none other then with dogs for the crossbow they are NOT mentioned WITH firearms

Roggs. Thanks for your input.. what I see is the real issue and or problem is the fact that several times people said they could not find such a regulation.even Albany is unsure of the actual written law. They told me that it isn't in the ..(Now here is the problem)...hunters regulations book. Expecting hunters to know If they are violating a law when they look in the DEC ISSUED YEARLY. REGULATIONS BOOK in good faith to stay legal and they exclude it. What possible sense does that make? I did an extensive search and now as you may have read Albany is searching as well, how can tickets be issued when the alleged rule is buried. I find it funny they questioned me a few times as to whether I was a lawyer or not..when I said no They responded you certainly sound like one is this about a case?..I got the impression that would have changed the entire conversation.

Culver here is one thing posed to me.." Here's the problem an officer see' s you leaving the woods with a compound and a x bow and a dead deer " That's fine they would see an arrow with blood fat and hair imbedded in the arrows.broad.head and 3 clean bolts.. It's impossible to hide such evidence. Now to be honest the issue would actually be a missing arrow and the obvious fact a bolt could be hidden..That said a deer could be killed left and a bow picked up and exchanged for a x bow..Yet they do not assume guilt to those carrying a cross bow legally during bow season to kill other animals...If nothing else the willingness to carry both weapons should show legal intent

I may have but, lest you forget..your done with my nonsense. It was long telephone call. Though let's remind you all I asked of you was written law... This is the same thing I require from Albany..Actual written law.
-
Which is probably why ALBANY is still looking....
-
No reeltime for you DO NOT NEED a muzzle loading license to hunt turkey ,small game nor coyote in their open seasons...which BTW is now....You ONLY need one to hunt deer with a cross bow during the last 2 weeks on bow and all gun seasons.
-
Thanks for quoting that Culver ...I put him on block after he told me I need to thank ChrisW...lol
-
Culver...not just turkey, all small game ,turkey and coyote can be killed during bow season with a cross bow.
-
hahaha

Lets update shall we? I put a call into Albany this a.m. I told them exactly what was needed...to talk to a person well versed in the laws...then explained the situation and let them know I needed a written law emailed to me that specifically states the legalities of the cross bow issue and carrying both weapons ... the above was their first response several hours after trying to find something...so there is the update.

Definitely looking good...not today though, wind is whipping...and the leaves are doing cyclone runs all over the property. I honestly do not see how I'm being combative. I don't like words being put in my mouth so will address such things...that's logic..All I have repeated is show me the written regulations..I never put words in Chris's mouth nor did I get nasty when he accused me of doing something illegal. Just said show your proof ..yet here I am being told I'm combative..Well Ok..BTW was was going to move on until I saw I was saying things I never did.
