  1. Never got one that big but both myself and SIL took two that were 150, and that was down in Alfred were they don't normally get that big. Here in corn and soybean country,an area where a whole lot of people plot, natural browse and water is abundant and they have little reason for any exertion to find food...coupled with trail cam pics..Then add a few mild winters. I can see where there could easily be 200 # doe, guys are taking buck well over 200#'s
  2. gjs4...after your First negative comment, I looked up your posts. 4 out of 4 at that time were all negative or nasty to other people's threads. I'm sure you've upped that number significantly seeing this last one. I'll just rack this up to your character flaw.
  3. THANKS....dang I forgot about that and the urine I froze...Lol
  4. What pressure...They never left the field and continued eating...I also have nearly forty stand sets and 14 ground blinds on a property with 3 distinct zones. How often do you use your stands in a season? I can't get to use all my sets
  5. Would do well to watch this weeks Growing deer TV..I can't link right now I'm on the kindle...Excellent footage and examples of deer dropping on shots and great advice about it...
  6. TF , I have a stand right on the edge of my bigger food plot...I had the tree I planned to put it up against die and this was the only other one big enough. I had a blast getting out of that stand when I had deer 40 yards away....and not spooking them when it was still light out...though not legal...I could get down and back away and once walk in the open across the field to the pines without spooking them..I took a while for they would occasionally look my way
  7. So what is your preferred lure...I'll use anything on sale and tinks was on sale this winter so I picked up a bunch...the mock scrape buck urine and doe pee...I also have doe in heat and an all season blend, but those will not be used until later in Oct.early Nov.. I know guys around me use lures and I believe they are using the doe in heat stuff way too early...If they spook when I first put that out...I will not use anything the rest of the season except fruit based scents and believe it or not...mixed berry car vent clip on fresheners...that was what I had on a branch in this apple tree last year( no apples)
  8. I just set up several mock scrapes and 2 have dippers...I have an apple tree one and one in a rub tree then a few wood to field travel areas...tinks mock scrape and buck lure.I set cams to catch any action near the drippers scrapes...
  9. Here they bed everywhere...so I need to figure who and when...is it fawns bedded that I'm pushing or a family group...time of year will dictate that. Time of day that is just experience and glassing from a distance before going in. When have they left for water and or preferred food...Well about the time I'm figuring during hunting season that they will be on their feet and moving.
  10. I know it's drummed into us cover ,cover cover and to some degree I do agree. Though having several sections of very mature and pretty barren woods in perfect areas cover just isn't an option. So your eyes have to do the work...I routinely set up on the edge of plots or against trees in leafless areas and tag deer because I get down to their level and look the way they do. I take advantage of multiple trunks when ever possible. This new stand gave me several issues...for one where? It's a bow stand in hill country and on my mind is the run...I do not care how dead a deer is on it's feet, no lungs heart split in two...give it a hill and there is a reason for the term DEAD RUN...I've seen deer on a hill run a 1/4 mile and more shot as describe above. So that 1/4 is firmly in my mind when I want to set a stand in known buck travel areas. This stand is in such an area. We live on a hill side a steep one with saddle and ridges, at least that's what I call them. The hill rises above us and then on our top side flattens in an area that runs to the beginning of a long winding gully. This goes up to a ridge and then drops down to another narrow flat area and drops hard to a larger flat area before dropping down into the neighbors swamp which in turn drops farther down the hill. I put the new stand on the narrow "ledge" in a large split maple. The only cover anywhere and just above several mature oak. I can see the "saddle" above me and just see where the oak flats start below me... The deer run this ridge on and off all day but it is their travel route up and down our section of the hill. So I took some pics When the deer leave the plot above me they walk up and incline and are nearly eye level with me This is fine because what they do is hit that point and look down to scan the woods and flat area, once they start down that incline I'm out of view. they pass me and hit another "ridge" and they are looking down a fairly steep incline. Coming up the hill they are usually coming at an angle and the trunks help to cover me. I am facing North East The suns in their eyes coming up in the morning and the trunks cover me as it moves along to the west and is never in my face the winds come in from the west and north west.. but tend to lift at this point and drop hard up on the neighbors...I believe the trees have a lot to do with that... Anyways what are your tough sets and why?
  11. Last night.....boneless chicken breast dredged in a roasted garlic yogurt dressing and sprinkled with shaved parmesan baked , mixed greens salad, baked potato, fresh garden carrots cooked and drizzled with maple syrup, corn on the cob.
  12. I have stands and elevated blinds from 4ft to 22ft,taken deer from all.
  13. Decided to take some pics from the stand I fixed. I have a dead limb and a couple of branches on a dog wood to trim but good to go..I miss using that stand.....Just talk to UPS guy...2 120+ spotted in farmers hay field behind us ...so at least they are around...he saw 8 getting ready to cross onto us when he drove up
  14. I'll get my aging info else where....they really do little on ageing by size and they make it sound like 2 1/2 is in the "older Deer" class Good info on tooth aging, took up most of the page...problem is...the deer's dead before you can tooth age it....hhmmmm
  15. You are RIGHT cluster flies but they are as big as blow flies! They stink too! Thanks for catching that.. We just make sure everything picked up and vacuumed before the dogs go in...
  16. Our worst problem at camp are blow flies...new windows doors ...makes no difference nasty nasty things...I can vacuum a garbage bag of them...
  17. No chance to sprout then...turkeys one of Ma Natures many vacuum cleaners...lol
  18. Ahhh Gee... seeing I'm a killer and still have my blood lust....I have fun regardless of the weapon. the easier the better......hahahaha Man glad I have the animals blocked they were busy in the BL thread I noticed...lol
  19. TF did the beans make it at all...I know you got a cold snap about the time you put them in...I know you weren't expecting any real growth but just and attraction to the new food.... PS.... I have to say a seclusion cage on that trail plot might surprise you on growth...
  20. I use dull replaceable or one G4. I won't shoot replaceable blades more than once in hunting
  21. For ladder stand I will use heavy zip ties to attach..I love my zip ties...Lol
  22. So for those that have seen it...how did it match up? I watched just trailers and won't be paying to see the movie...Sorry the clown and the voice just didn't cut it. It was like listening to someone else butcher favorite song, irritating. I just know I'd spend the entire time comparing it to the original...No one can match that clowns face or his voice..they were seared into my brain... creepy son of a gun!
  23. My stands had a rough winter ....but all easy fixes did have a floor board rot on one 22 yr. Old stand. It was non pressure treated and I knew it when building...but was short just one board. Dang not bad for a regular 2x6...Lol stand is built in the crotch of a huge maple. So nothing but tree directly under it. Checked all other pieces and bracing then pulled nails and replaced. Was going to retire that stand because the corn field has made it barren. They usually chop the end of this month .. but not this year..So I planted a tail plot to it.. Just 40 yrds from the house and one of my best stands. Was a major travel area morning and night. Also mid day bucks until the corn went in. I checked prints and they are back traveling again. If nothing else it's a great stand to watch most of that section of wood lot. Though I gave the seat a heck of a yank and it popped off the tree...looks like a ratchet strap fix on that. Never liked seat position anyways. Then one slippery ladder. So I cut strips of hardware cloth wide enough to bend over the 2x4 rungs and screwed them down. That was a pretty easy fix...I'm considering this for my ladder stand as well...May try on lower rungs as a test to see how it would work in those thin ice situations.
