  1. Did an elk bowhunt in CO a few years back, hearing that in the morning was amazing ... we're actually planning a trip back there next year, I can't wait!
  2. I defrosted left over sauce from a batch of stuffed peppers and simmered cubed chunks of venison chops in the sauce served over rice.
  3. Now that's funny, but I have no room to laugh being a Dolphin's fan ... LOL
  4. Boy that brings back some memories ... havent crow hunted in years. Always was so cool, if after you tag the sentinel crow the flock then comes in your way! Good Luck
  5. You'll love it...I bought a Remington 11-87 with deer barrel in 1986 and used it every year until I bought my Remington 30-06 in 2013. I also bought a ventilated rib bird barrel with the Rem-Choke tube system and have used the 11-87 as my small game and turkey gun ever since I've had it. In all these years never any issues with it and it has seen more hours and adverse hunting conditions afield...although I admit I can be overly anal about breaking it down and wiping it down after a hunt in sloppy conditions. Plus a good cleaning and oiling after each deer season and turkey season. My 11-87 wood stock is starting to look it's age and I've been thinking about getting the camo stock and forend kit for it. I highly recommend the 11-87, you won't be disappointed.
  6. I have seen mature deer walk through the area peed in without spooking but it is clear that they do notice the scent. The amount of alarm and reaction I guess would be individual to each deer.
  7. I used to climb down and walk away from my tree to pee. But after a number of times of seeing unalarmed deer walking through the area I peed, sometimes less than an hour later, I started just letting it go from the stand a few years ago. There's no indication of it acting as an attractant but I dont think it raises any alarm in deer.
  8. I'm with you Bowman, can't wait for 12/11!
  9. That's a good point, I never thought of an injury causing an early shedding of antlers.
  10. So yesterday after I got my doe, I helped my neighbor's son's kid track a spike that he hit. While tracking I found this shed antler...looks like it was a shed from last year by the amount that rodents chewed it up, but I'm not really sure how long it would take for them to chew down a shed antler. Plus I'm thinking that it's early for a buck to be shedding antlers already being the rut's still in swing not to mention the second rut would be kicking in afterwards. Still a pretty cool find!
  11. Just had another spike come down from the pines ... came by me at less than 10 yds
  12. Just had a small buck, spike or fork, chasing a doe and a yearling. Not a full blown chase just on and off trotting. Then he tried to mount the yearling twice and the chase was on again.
  13. Got to the stand nice and early, about 5:45, so didn't spook anything on the hike in...Haven't been to this stand since I shot my buck Saturday afternoon. Brought the rifle for a big doe and the camera for any bucks that might show up! Looks like it's going to be a beautiful morning to be in the woods! Happy Thanksgiving all and Good Luck!
  14. AM hunt until about 11 ... Good Luck all!
  15. Hang in there Grow, your property always seems to have good deer activity, just a matter of time till you cross paths with the right one. Your worst season can turn into your best season all in a matter of a few minutes! Good Luck!
  16. People lose common sense or just don't think of the risk when they get excited by seeing deer and some don't understand ballistics as to just how far a bullet can travel. I can't give particulars but some years back, I arrested a guy that launched some rounds and ended up hitting a house, going through the exterior wall, continuing through the kitchen, through the hallway, and lodging into an interior door; luckily missing the woman walking in the hallway at the time by less than two feet. This house was more than a mile and a quarter away from where the round was fired from. Glad you and your nephew are OK!
  17. My little cousin's had a great season this year...got a 4Pt and a doe during bow season and he got this awesome buck yesterday!
  18. Climbed into stand about 1:00...love being out here in the snow. Since I got my buck Saturday, I brought my rifle and my camera, we'll see. Hope to get some decent photos and will prob only take a doe if she's big and traveling alone.
  19. My buck yesterday came into those bedded does at 11:55 and I shot him right at about noon.
  20. I think a better idea than closing different state lands rotationally would be to implement antler restrictions at some of the state lands that appear to have less than average quality of bucks, although on the flip side of that; I'm not really in agreement with a system that tells a hunter which quality of deer he can take to fill his tag. I choose to pass on smaller younger bucks waiting for what I consider to be a shooter buck to me but have no issues with others taking any legal deer that makes them happy.
  21. Well I was packed in with lunch and rain gear if needed to do an all day sit. Made it too stand extra early hoping to not spook anuthing on my way in, in stand at 5:35. The day started off interesting as i was getting mysrlf situated in my stand with a red light, a turkey flew off roost anout 40 yds from my tree. So the turkeys were roosted i my area, which is cool, i love all the turkey talk and seeing them come out of roost. As it turned out, the flock was roosted about 70 yds from my tree. At about 8:15 I passed on a group of 5 doe that came by...about 20 yrs. Tgen at about 10:20 a doe and a yearling came by. It was cool watching the doe clean the yearling licking the fawn all over it's face and ears for about 15 minutes. Then they grazed for about 10 minutes before bedding down about 40 yrs from my stand. I had hoped that a buck buck would cruise through to check the doe and the bedding area. Well about 1155 I notice one of the bedded deer intently look to her left and staring in that direction. After about 20 seconds, I see a deer approaching from the left and then I see antlers. As the buck started approaching the bedded doe, she got up and walked a little to the right. The buck walked tight over to the area she was laying and sniffed her bed for a few seconds. It was thick in this area and at this point I thought the buck was a medium 6Pt so I decided to pass on him. Then after he was done sniffing the does bed he moved to the right towards the doe. She bounded my way a little bit and started walking out in front of me. The buck followed but when he reached s clearing at about 27 yrs, I saw that he was a decent 8Pt and leveled the cross hairs on his chest. At the shot he mule kicked bounded away for about 20 yds and then walked slowly dropping about 40 yds from where he was hit.
  22. Well a buck came in to check on the bedded does!
  23. Have been watching a doe clean a yearling button buck licking all over his face and ears for about 15 minutes. Now they're both laying down about 40 yds from me. Hoping for a buck to cruise through to check out this bedding area.
