  1. Thanks, Hunter I sent the link to my brother. He has a nice 40 acre chunk of land just 10 minutes from you in Coventry. He would love to have a cabin built alongside his beautiful creek
  2. NJ has had a bowhunting,50 yard rule from an elevated stand for a couple of years now. I have not heard of any problems. Fish & Game is trying to reduce the overpopulation of deer in those tight neighborhoods. There really is no other way to get at those animals without the 50 yard rule. Kind of hard to hear deer approaching with all the leaf blowers blasting around though..
  3. I sat in an open tree stand in Sask in November for 5 days, it warmed up to -25 around mid day not calculating wind chill. Now that's cold! Thank God for my Heater Body Suit. Still can't feel my toes though..
  4. I had the same issue with my cabin in Delaware County. Had no electric or phone. After using a generator to charge the 12 volt battery system for a few years I decided to add electric to the house. The cabin is accessed by a "right of way" and my neighbor gave me a utility easement for $1.00. I bought a used back hoe and dug a 1/2 mile trench along the shoulder of the dirt road from the nearest transformer to my cabin, then installed direct burial cable and phone line, "phone company gave me the phone cable". Bought the new transformer from NYSEG and they installed it. Saved a ton of money doing it myself. Then sold the back hoe for a few dollars more than I paid for it. It's nice to flick the light switch on, but kept the gas lights for atmosphere too.
  5. What annoys me the most are all of the beach tree leaves that hang on till spring, rustling and blowing in a slight breeze. Drowns out any far off animal noises.
  6. Welcome Catskill Hunter! I've been hunting in the Catskills for many years, have a place in Sidney. Where are you from in northern NJ and where in the Catskills is your place? The mountains are very peacefulllllllll Catskillkid
  7. Not really, I wouldn't eliminate any "special season" as I enjoy them all. Just saying that I would hunt with a crossbow too. I am having a great time with any weapon that I happen to have with me, crossbow would be welcome also.
  8. I don't know what the big issue is, compound v crossbow. I hunt rifle, bow and muzzleloader. I don't care what weapon I use, I'm a happy hunter as long as I'm in the woods having a great time. I would use a spear & boomerang if there were seasons for them also. i would bet the boomerang elitists would think the compound bow hunters have an unfair advantage over them.
  9. The next time you have it done, you may want to have the logging done in the winter when the frost is deep and ground is hard, Saves the trails and almost no ground disturbance. You will not be able to see any evidence of logging except for the tops and stumps. Tender tree tops are fed on heavily by deer when they need it the most also.
  10. My buddies and I lease 1,500 acres in Coshocton County, yes there are nice bucks there. We have taken a couple in the 170' class with many 130" and above in the last 6 years. There is a public hunting area called Woodbury Wildlife Area with 14,600 acres to roam around on. Don't know what the hunting pressure is like but I would guess pretty heavy. Many reclaimed strip coal mines in the area that are growing up with heavy brush. Check it out on the web.
  11. Hey Grow, You're doing a great job! It's a good time of the year to go in the woods to do some TSI. My forester says that after cutting the undesirable trees we can sit down and actually watch the crop trees grow. My forest had been high graded for many years until I bought it 12 years ago. Timber Stand Improvement has made a huge difference for the wildlife.
  12. Belo My only point was about the guys I know who use this trick when they are knowingly trespassing. Obviously we do not know what the guy in the pic was really up to. As far as looking in a barn for your dog without permission, a person would have a real hard time walking on two legs out of my barn if I caught them in there unanounced. Way too many breakins and robberies around here. Last week my neighbor arrived at her weekend home to find all of her furniture, wood stove and belongings stolen.
  13. Stopped going when they banned gun displays and vendors at the show. Harrisburg did the same this year also.
  14. I found the paper work the forester gave to me. He gave me a copies of his Geological Survey Map and Sat. Imagery map showing my land with the test area marked out. Also gave me a chart showing the growth and species of the trees and undergrowth in the area as well. Very informative. The program is called - Forest Inventory and Analysis Program. The office is located at 165 South Main Street, Cortland, NY 13045. web site is http://www.fia.fs.fed.us
  15. Unfortunately I know of a couple of guys who will hang a dog leash around their neck while they are trespassing. Gives them the excuse of looking for their dog. Also, since when does a coyote hunter wear dark camo after a fresh snowfall? I've had my run-ins with poachers too, they always have a lame excuse, I hate em!
  16. The forester did hand me literature about the program. I'll try and find it in my forestry program file and get back to you.
  17. There is a sample site on my land also, they said my site has been in their inventory for over 30 years. US Forestry was inspecting about 4 years ago to see what has happened over the years. The forester left me some literature and told me about a web site that I can look at which explains what they are doing, Unfortunately I lost the web site. Should not be too hard to find though.
  18. Just put some slack in the sign as mentioned earlier. Use vinyl signs with galvanized staples. Mine have been up for 10 years unless a critter chewed on them.
  19. i believe that I can get a bad case by just looking at poison ivy. I am extremely careful not to even get near it. A couple of years back I got a bad case on my hands and lower arms and could not imagine how I got it. Then my wife told me that our Lab was romping in a patch of it. I guess I got it from petting the dog!
