  1. I planted WR and clover mix in 2 plots, the rye was 6" tall in 7 days and the clover has sprouted also. Last weekend I planted a third plot with a close mix of Split's recommendation. WR, oats & red clover. Should be interesting to see what happens And yes, fertizilized with triple 19 and had 2 tons of lime per acre applied in early spring
  2. Now I've seen everything, Deer getting their ears pierced!
  3. Culver, I agree about a dozer disturbing too much good soil, I had a big Cat loader with huge teeth on the bucket clear a 2 acre plot in 1/2 day. The teeth acted like root rakes and left the top soil in place. Then back dragged to level it all out. There were some roots left in the ground but were rotted away in a couple of years The entire job only cost me a few hundred dollars.
  4. A D8 dozer with a big ripper can do a lot of work. You might want to work a little over- time at work to pay for the machine and operator for 1 or 2 days. You will enjoy your big food plot 10 years sooner and save on the back pain, blisters and cold drinks. Spend your time on timber stand improvement.
  5. HI Split At this point I am not concerned about if they are annual or perennial. I have 8 different plots that average a third acre each. Clover seems to be the "go to" seed, only because nothing else seems to be able to keep up with the deer consumption. I know there is an over population of deer and/or not enough food plot area. There is nobody else planting in my area and the dairy farmers are just letting their fields go to hay so there is no other planted food source such as corn or beans to distribute the over browsing on my land. I really don't want to spend the time and $ to fence off the plots either. I planted Winter Rye and clover mix this weekend in 2 plots and will do the same in a third plot next weekend. I guess it is a good thing to have too many deer, but I would still like to.have something other than clover in a few of the plots The DEC says that DMZ 4O is below carrying capacity, I think they should do a new population count. Thanks for the help!
  6. Having trouble getting any other food source established except for clover. Deer and other critters wipe out turnips and beans before they get 6" tall. I'm thinking of planting winter rye with clover mixed in this August. Any other suggestions? Also is winter rye the best choice of the winter grains? Thanks for the help!
  7. I've talked with a lot of other guys that are haveing the same problem. We have come to the conclusion that the early warm weather before the season started advanced their breeding activity. I was seeing and hearing many gobblers searching for hens in mid March! Also have seen many good sized chicks with hens already too. I think breeding is mostly over in Delaware County
  8. I had 8 tons spread by my local ag supplier. Cost was about $400.00 for all 4 plots. Plots must have good access for the truck and ground must be dry.
  9. Looks like someone is flipping you the bird
  10. It's like Christmas morning when you were a kid, opening gifts. Can't wait to get to that tree.
  11. Your deer look healthy, came through the winter in great shape. Too bad the coyote looks overly healthy too.
  12. I just owl hoot with my mouth, seems to work most times unless there is a low pressure system rolling in.
  13. I have a power line that crosses a portion of my land also. I own the land and the power company has a deeded easement to cross it with their lines and only they have the right to access the land to maintain their poles and lines. Once in while I'll have to confront someone who thinks he can come on my property to hunt the lines or ride atvs and snowmobiles. It would be nice if power companies would inform the public that they do not own the land that crosses private property. When in doubt, ask permission.
  14. Sounds like a great time, unfortunatly I had already made plans with the family to go the camp and mountains on that weekend. It's hard to get the family together anymore now that the kids are out on their own now. Have a great time! Post a lot of pics next week.
  15. A bobcat with a root rake should do the trick
  16. I have hunted with Libby Camps many times. They are in the Maine North Woods. Shot 3 bears with them. Great camp on a huge lake with fly out service if you need it. Matt gives you a boat & motor for the week to fish for brookies and landlocked salmon during the day then hunt bears in the evening. Many small streams and ponds within miles of the main lodge. I even saw a chocolate bear, but was too small to take. They did'nt believe me when I told them of the color phase bear, one guide sat the stand the next evening to comfirm for himself. He had'nt heard of anyone ever seeing one in Maine. They pulled the stand the next day so no one would shoot it. They wanted it to breed more. In my opinion, the best place to go.
  17. Nice clear pics, that woodie must be lost. It is still winter I think, but feels more like mid spring.
  18. It's a good time to go on these expensive hunts, before she starts popping out the little huntlets. That is when the real money is needed Good Luck in Africa!
  19. Hunt extended deer seasons in other state, NJ & Ohio
