  1. My friend who won a stone sheep hunt in the Yukon a couple of years ago has drawn an elk permit for this year in the Valles Caldera Elk Perserve in New Mexico. Only a 1% chance of drawing the tag and he got it! Has an great chance of shooting a 380" to 400" class bull. He is a lucky bas^&$#. With his luck, I'm sure he'll draw a Maine moose permit now too.
  2. Very awesome trip! Great pics too. Congrats on the bull.
  3. Sorry, but my experience has been that turnips depleat the soil of nutients. The first year they will grow great. The following years you will need to make sure your soil ph is good and fertilize heavy.
  4. Maine cut back on permits this year, I'm crossing my fingers too
  5. Has anyone been selected for a special draw permit for 2015 yet? My friend and I were both drawn for eastern Colorado deer permits. Took 6 preference points and 6 years of waiting. Should be a great hunt though. The outfitter that we chose to go with has consistently taken 190" or better mule deer. We are going on the last rifle hunt of the season in December. Has anyone hunted the northeast portion of Colorado in the Sand Hills region? If so, please relay your experiences.
  6. Why don't you post the picture of them on this thread? It may embarrass them enough to stay off your land if they are members of HuntingNY. I hate trespassers too. My buddy and I hunted our lease in Ohio this past weekend and found boot prints around the proven turkey roosting area. Very hard to keep them off when we are 8 hours away.
  7. Most of the guys that I hunt with in NJ have no intention of shooting a bear including me. We see them all the time when hunting. We also see quit a few of them ( about 2 per week ) just walking through the neighborhood. I just saw a 150 pounder yesterday afternoon while walking with my wife, it was feeding in a skunk cabbage patch and was only 20 yards from the trail, it never even lifted its head to look at us, they are almost tame. After shooting three of them the novelty kind of wears off and I don't like the taste of bear meat either. So I encourage you to come and thin them out for us.
  8. I would use Round Up wait 2 weeks then use Round Up again. Then ruff up the ground so as not to disturb any dormant weed seeds. Then plant clover as per instructions on bag. The best time to plant clover is in the fall, so weeds can not take over and shade out the clover. Clover mostly establishes its roots the first year.
  9. Nj F&G is talking about a 2 bear limit for 2015 and opening the bow season for bear hunting too. A lot of bow hunters complain that they see more bears than deer in earlier bow seasons. Two of my friends had bears following them while dragging deer back to their trucks last year. Makes you think twice about tracking a hit deer in the dark. Most of the bears are denned up by the time the 6 day shotgun season opens and F&G wants a larger harvest.
  10. Zag Looks like you have quite the project going on there. I did the same as you many years ago. I'm not sure if this has been mentioned, but get ready for much work after you remove the stumps and try to turn the soil. You'll have an incredible amount of roots that you will be tearing up. I used a large cat bucket loader with ripper teeth to initially uproot everything and it still took many years before the remaining roots rotted away. Pulling a two bottom plow or cultivator even with my tractor was a real chore for a few years. I can't imagine how the early pioneers did it with mules and horses. You will enjoy the plot once all of your hard work is finished though. Keep up the enthusiasm!
  11. All are skidder trails that have brushed in over the years. Can still use my woods buggy though, Suzuki Samauri. Will have a timber harvest in the next year or two so trails will be brushed back
  12. Sell the 30-06. Buy the 270 and a 300 short mag. Now you have the best of both worlds. i have many rifles in different calibers but I always seem to reach for the 270 when I open the gun cabinet.
  13. That first pic looks like the rear of a cougar to me :]
  14. Lots of potholes here, another sure sign of spring

  16. We are in the high-rise building maintenance and window cleaning business. We maintain most of the tallest buildings in NJ. 40 years and still loving it!
  17. There is only one way to attract bears and have them stay around her for that long of a period of time. She must be feeding them. New Jersey outlaws the feeding of bears for the very reason that she is demonstrating. Those bears are being conditioned to being around humans. Fish & Game should pay her a visit!
  18. There was way too much snow on the ground to walk around in. the woods had at least 2' with 4' drifts in many areas. I'm sure the critters are having a real hard time.
  19. Wow, that's a lot of white stuff. Maybe I'll just kick back and relax in front of the wood stove. Thanks for the reply
  20. I am thinking of chasing coyotes this weekend. Can someone tell me what the snow depth is for that area? Thank you!
