Looking for a track driver rifle.. opinions??
Lawdwaz replied to apoallo's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
Really no noticible difference between a 308 & 30-06. Ammo for both is easily found. Savage (from what I have heard) has a good choice of LH guns and they are very accurate. If this were me, I'd simily get a LH Remington CDL, chambered in 7mm-08 and NEVER look back. Spend the coin (sell a kidney or some sperm if your short some cabbage) and get yourself a real looker & shooter. Or, watch the web for a used LH Remington BDL in 308. The do pop up now and then. I'd take the 7mm-08 over the 308 though........and then there is the 260Rem. So many choices, too little scratch........ -
A good balance beam will never wear out. No batteries either............ You'll find it a very useful addition to your basement goodies.

Nice going, congrats!

I was thinking this morning about Doc and others with their vast experience in bowhunting. Doc has been at it for almost a half a century! Congrats 'Ol Timer! <grin> My wifes uncle Bob was a founding member at Hawkeye Bowman and has a truck load of memories, though they are fading......... What great stories the older guys have and can pass on to some of the younger (and older guys like ME!) up & comers around here. How about it Doc, who was your mentor? Early equipment? Camo? Scent control? <grin> Hunting Clubs and friends? What can you share?

Nice. I'm starting a new thread..............

Light is right!!

I weighed the beast last night, 9lbs 5oz. (no sling, just gun, scope & rings) It still needs wheels...........

Dusk or do you mean sunset?

You get the crap colored star for the Post Of The Day. Congrats? Edited out of respect for the site & mods.

Makes sense to me! How many years you been at this bowhunting thing?

Hey Doc..Tons of funny stuff here in this thread (not your post but the entire thread) I'm sure is eye opening to you and others. What is your max range, if you have one on deer. I know maybe you'll stretch it a bit at times but where do you "draw the line"? Me, approx. 23 yards is my max. I really look for the 3-5 yard shot but inside of 17-18 yards I'm most confident.

As far as a blanket statement I'd agree. If you said in the last 30 years, east of the Mississippi I'd say you were very wrong. The concept of hunting from a treestand is certainly not "oversold". You can not say that a person on the ground, with limited visability and their scent floating at ground level has a better advantage. Deer don't worry too much about danger from above like they do from the ground. Congrats to all those that hunt from the ground. If you leave that GB in place, cool. If you have to lug it in & out each day, set it up & tear it down, well that will be just a pain in the azz. I guess if you wash all your clothes in scent free soap, spray down EVERYTHING before entering the woods and make sure you use scentless lube on your bow, you should be in good shape and be able to whack & stack 'em from the pop up blind. (Don't forget that Butt Out tool) You will need it.......... Me, I'll stick with the treestand for now and play the wind while enjoying the view. Maybe I'll get lucky and kill one. Best-O-luck!

I was pretty sure you would like this post! This is the only Barnes I've recovered but I have other makers bullets! One of my favorites is my Nosler Partition that killed my one & only bull elk. 180gr out of the 300WSM at about 75-100 yards. Entered towards the back of the ribs and lodged under the hide after smashing the right shoulder. Perfect quartering away angle. He dropped on the spot or maybe tumbled a bit. I don't totally recall........ I have some others, ML bullets & deer slugs, even a roundball from the flintlock from a PA deer. Like you said, a great momento.

I sure don't but I wish you luck. I wouldn't be surprised if Pygmy has something for you. What about Google? I had a friend who used to make turtle soup out of snapping turtles. Unbelievable! Amazing! Delicious!

I'm almost speechless................ No, I am speechless.

You can stop giving advice on something you know NOTHING about. You watch too much TV.............

DUDE! I mentioned it in the original post, were you just looking at the pictures again? <grin> 100% weight retention. It weighed 80gr, even with the tip MIA. The little bits of remaining flesh must add up to the weight of a little blue tip!!

Ah HA! It's you! What is your handle over there?

I shot a nice doe last year on the opening day of the Pennsylvania deer season. I shot her towards dusk, 200 yards, head on. I had an exceptionally good rest and figured I smack her right engine room. At the shot she flipped back over on her backside. Basically she disappeared from my view. By the time I got to her it was dark enough that a headlamp a big help. I'm always looking for bullets after the fact and figured that one got into the guts someplace and ended up on the ground, never to be recovered. I quartered her that night at the farmers son's place then finished her up the next day at home. Well, this afternoon I was slicing up a roast for some stew and looky what I found. A perfect specimen of a Barnes TTSX. This is a 80gr. 6mm shot out of my 243 Winchester chambered LH Remington 700 CDL. 100% weight retention. Not sure how that happens with the tip missing but I figure the little bit of meat stuck in place makes up for it?? Cool. I thought it was worthy of some pics........

I wish I was riding it instead of snapping pics. You should have seen this beast when it left the station in Arcade! What a MONSTER!! It was raining and I couldn't get any good pics at the time. Low and behold 15 minutes latter we saw it chugging up the valley. It looked like a cool pic at the time........
