If I was choosing between the two rifles, it'd be a Tikka. If your looking for a s/a caliber, I wouldn't look any further than a 260 Remington or a 7mm-08. Recoil and over the counter ammo prices will get ya' hurtin'! You have a "big" gun in the 30-06. Go with a sweet shooting caliber that will kill any deer that ever walked. You won't be disappointed. Although I have a 7mm-08, if I could do it over I "might" make it a 260!! Either one and you win. I also have a 300WSM and that one I'd gladly trade for an 30-06 (maybe) I bought a Tikka 223 for my son a few years ago and I'll tell you, it has a great trigger. Stock fit is also great and it shoots nice! Only thing with those Tikka guns, DON'T loose the clip................$$$$$ Good luck soldier, God Bless!

Cash SHOULD be king on that one. Must be a private seller, no dealer involved? I wish I had some good advise but I don't. Last I checked, Ford has made a few of those so.................. Another will show up, and it'll be a better deal!! Hang in there & Merry Christmas!!

I'll be butchering this weekend, isn't everybody? Merry Christmas...................................................

I've had a Leupold Vari XII 2x7 on my shotgun for about 30 years. (one scope, two guns) It is mounted on my Ithaca Model 87 now and has been since 1988. Before that it was on a Remington 870. It has seen hundreds of rounds and shows now signs of going "tits up". Don't fall for the "shotgun" scope hype. Just buy a Leupold VX2 2x7 and hunt!

Great news, congrats to all!!

Who's taking the time to age a doe? We'll weigh some of the bigger ones but don't generally age them. Heaviest doe I ever killed & weighed went 152lbs and was shot in Holland, NY 6 or 7 years ago. She was a load!

All the places I want to use it prone either the grass is too high or my belly is toooooo big. It just wouldn't work. Tried a ground blind made with old blowdowns and dead wood. That seemed like it was going to work except the deer didn't cooperate. I was thinking of buying some mulch bales and making a little fort, just like when I was a kid. That would be pretty cool......!!

Is the archery season going to open October 1st for sure?
-
Thanks guys. I was ready to sell the pistol, then I thought about dragging the bench out to that field for the hunt. I'd been having fits trying to get it set up properly and prone ain't happening for me!! I know the bench set up is not for everyone but it worked for me! Looking forward to next year.............

Well, I don't know about you guys but I've been at this for the last two months. I can't complain about the length of the season. Only thing that would be nice is if the ML season didn't open until after Christmas like Pennsylvania and ran for three weeks. That would be pretty neat.

Yikes! I'm staying home tomorrow if there shedding the bone already. Where did he find them?

The landowner would probably rather have a nice turkey breast and/or ham! (unfortunately)

Warm breathable hunting jacket

I wouldn't rush into any Goretex. Noisy, leaks & over priced. Peruse a Cabela's catalog. If they don't have it, nobody will. -

Lighter jacket. Your sweating because you have too many layers on. Only other answer is to sloooooow down! -
Well, sounds like you have a lot to look forward to next year. Get practicing with that bow!

Summer of 2010 I bought a pistol from member Pygmy here. He guaranteed success if I followed his advice. He said that I needed to work hard at developing a load, practice and hope for the best! Wise man that he is, it worked. Although I never got a chance to hunt with the rig last year, I vowed to carry it when ever possible this season and hopefully connect with it. I have a piece of ground that I hunt later in the season in Lima that has a huge chunk of golden rod/CRP that the deer just hang out in all day. They pass through it, bed, feed, hide etc. (sometimes die) I took a 3 legged shooting bench, front rest, piece o camo, bucket etc. and set up shop for what I figured would be a interesting morning. The first deer I saw came from the road to the south of me and when they finally gave me an opportunity they were 40 yards away and passed by at 20 yards. I just wasn't looking for a shot that close with the LR pistol so I passed them up. 7 total in the flock. Saw a bunch of others but the shots were not safe so they got a pass. Finally a doe appeared at 259yards, broadside and I missed. Damn. 30 minutes later a group of 4 came down the hill from the west and gave a great shot at 210 yards. At the shot, she bolted back to the west and stumbled after going about 100 yards. The Remington XP 100R, chambered in .260 Remington and stuffed with Berger VLD bullets did the trick. It worked out good with the bench and front rest. Maybe not exactly "field conditions" that most use but when in Lima............................................ She was a real nice sized doe. Good eating as always!

Take THAT, Scent Lok! I probably should have "sprayed down" before I went out with some of those goofy scent eliminating sprays?

I just noticed this picture from earlier this year on the October ML hunt in PA. At least I practice what I preach.........

It actually reminded me of spring time when hunting Alabama in January. Songbirds & turkey everywhere!

I hunted Alabama in January 2008 & January 2009. Went with a couple friends and had a great time. We were just looking to extend our season and have a good time. We all killed deer and one guy killed a hog, both years. The weather was tough one year, 23 degrees and then a tornado!! Good chance for a bobcat or coyote also.
