Cool, great job! I used to see a couple those piebalds on Big Tree Rd, between Hemlock & Livonia. Saw them a bunch of times. Years ago I saw one at the south end of Honeyoe, by the Wild Rose property.

Just take a look at the 5.5 year old I posted above. I didn't score that one but the 217lb 3.5 year old scored (rough, very rough) at approx. 112 B&C so the 5.5 year old is MAYBE 100"??

I think that trying to age a deer on the hoof is darned near impossible. Looking at the rack of a dead deer won't tell you anything either. It's just too hard to do it with any precision. Nice of you to leave that buck to your neighbors to shoot! I can't give you any answers on deer quality and why some bucks are much bigger than others.

Back in 1988 I hunted in one of Foulkrods camps that he was running with Delay River. The entire hunt was a circle jerk. Plenty went wrong on that trip and culminated with a blown radiator on my 1983 Ford Ranger in Weedsport on the trip home. Alcohol was present one night with BF being quite intoxicated and obnoxious.

fasteddie............ Some of his antics from years ago really soured me on Big Dan. His days with Bob Foulkrod and Caribou camps they shared. Stories I heard when I was in one of those camps..... The rough, unpolished tough guy attitude turns me off. Pimping all the crap that MOST guys wouldn't be caught dead with. The old videos he made were trash IMO. Now he is a Jesus fearing man? I'll pass on the redneck crap. YMMV.....

Very hard to beat a quality brand of merino wool. Spend the money and it will last quite awhile. Patagonia, Smartwool, Minus 33, Ibex etc,

Hmmm......Fond memories of friends shooting a doe and helping slide the thing to the bottom!! Steep ain't the word for it! Great country and plenty of deer. I haven't been there since the ice storm in 1991. I'm sure it is negotiable again. After the storm, it was impenetrable!! Big bucks and plenty of bear live to a ripe old age on that side hill. Back in about 1984 my buddy Wally killed an 9.5 year old buck half way down. -

Guys.....Here is the first paragraph from my OP on this subject: "A friend called me to get my opinion on a rifle. A friend of his is looking to get ONE rifle (Good Lord, WHY?) to hunt everything he'll ever do. On the menu; deer, antelope, elk and some longer range shooting out to 500 yards on targets for giggles". Note that I NEVER said anything about shooting an animal at 500 yards!! Thanks for all the good ideas. I'm still pulling for the 280. (kind of like a chocolate & vanilla twist cone)

Yesterday morning in Canadice I saw a HOG of a 10 point that looked to have some blood on his neck. He was about 45 yards and I had a good look at him. I still have no explanation for the dead buck lying 15 yards from my big bodied brute on the 28th of October. He had no visible trauma and I flipped him over to check. I guess he was hit by a car but who knows??

You guys are really taking this TOO far. Kinda fries my azz when these threads head in a downward spiral. You know what, now that I think about it, I remember last winter Gander Mountain was having a big ammo sale and had about 15 boxes of 264 Winchester Mag ammo at a REAL good price. Maybe I'll recommend that caliber to my buddy?? I'm sure all the sale stuff is gone but the smart GM staff will re-stock that 264 fodder to the ceiling. Good plinking?
