our stripper members?

The one thing I love about the hemlocks it the over head cover yet you can easily get underneath it where as these other id just have to maintain the lower limbs. Am I right or way off?
-
Not sure yet, I found a place in MI that I can get in the 2-3ft or 3-4ft, also a place out of PA. DEC are just to small, im way to impatient to watch those little seedlings take off.

Would a very small woods plot be a waste of time?

I think it depends on the density of your deer heard. If you have alot of deer than id say it might not be worth it. If you do plant id go with something that will regenerate after being browsed. I did a 1/2 acre ish plot with brassicas and they wipped it out before bow season. -
Your right, we have multiple hemlocks on our other block. I love hanging a stand in them, i shot my 8pt during bow out of one. HWA was reportely spotted in Canandaiuga and thats why i bypassed them.

If Norway than yes id cut the really low limbs as it matures. I wouldn't with the white would I? I guess I'm more concerned with overhead cover. This area gets a good amount of sunlight and I think once I hinge the heck out of it and plant these clumps it will be a gold mine of tall goldenrod that can block some wind and maybe ill try some native grass seed.
-
Exactly why ill go with clumps, or other block has couple acre block of mature pines, ground hasn't seen day light in 30yrs at least.

Im looking for opinions on what type of pine trees to plant. So im looking to convert about 8 acres into a major bedding area. Its already used during all months except winter because its light on cover/thermal cover. Its on a gradual slope with no ditches or ridges. Area consists of smaller diameter maple and ash trees, others include autumn olive I think, goldenrod and some type of thorn bushes. Its a great area to do this and its also located towards the center of the this block of woods. I'm gonna hinge the heck out of it and want to plant small clumps of pine trees through out the 8 acres for bedding cover, maybe 5 or 6 per clump to support different doe groups. I think I want something that will have good overhead cover but provides enough sun light for native grasses and or goldenrod to grow under each clump of trees. If you have any pics of your pines id like to see.

Got to thinking ive got a long weekend maybe will catch a flight to fla for a few days, southwest had nothing

I guess I'm the same, we just have a little more than a dusting of snow.
-
Gosh some steep areas but some good buck potential. Being close to it i know some people who own land next to or very close and have tagged some nice bucks.

Thanks Growie!! I walked the areas sunday and reminded myself how good a spot this. Pines it will be, we really need thermal cover on this piece. We do have a block of pines in one corner, not sure of the type but there isn't a branch for 60ft. Ill start a thread before I break into it and show beginning to end pics. Thanks for the feedback and following!!

Thanks for your feed, i think im ok making the whole area un huntable. Its basically the midde section of that 45 acre block. I think will hunt the edges with access from either side. I want the bucks thinking ive got the best whore house (no offence ladies) here in town!!

dbh, thanks for the thoughts. for the bedding area its currently a mix of younger ash/maple mixed in with some goldenrod and I think autumn olive. I was thinking of hinging a good portion on the trees and planting clumps of pines (maybe 5-10 per clump) to cater to multiple doe groups, I hadn't thought about multiple trails to the plot but that makes sense ill have ot incorporate that. Does hinging the whole area and clumping pines sound like a good plan?
-
dbh, thanks for the feed back, I'm always looking for other opinions, For the most part were using the tops long the edges but mainly when were cutting close to the edges. When were cutting more towards the center its been quicker to pile and burn vs dragging to the edge. I should have taking a picture on the one pinch point I worked around today, its loaded with brush and some trees along the edge I was able to hinge some away from the plot and into the point. I'm thinking once we get this cleared and dozed then ill assess the edges. My goal is to make the west side completely blocked to access ( will have a stand on the west pinch point). I'm thinking ill have to hinge some of the edges. As far as bedding (phase two of project) on the south end of the plot were going to create an 8 acre bedding area by hinge cutting the whole area and planting clumps of pines.

I thought sunday was a nice day in the woods today was even better!! Worked the other side if the pinch point today. We have about another 60yrds to hit the south end of the plot. What a hole in the sky!! 2nd & 3rd pics about 70yrds wide and about 60yrds to the tree line!!
