I kinda looks it could be one. 4yrs ago I got a nice buck with the bow, with sometime b4 gun season I decided id take the camera and take a hike in Mendon Ponds. I found a few trees that were very large in diameter that were rubbed. Right after inspecting these I see a huge buck 30-40yrds away. I turn the camera on, start to zoom in and it shut off... batteries were dead. That sucked.

Now shoot him... nobody like a buck that teases the cam!!

Went to my dads property this afternoon. I don't bow hunt much there due to the distance plus I have two better spots. 2 weeks ago I hung a stand in a new spot & due to the wind direction today this was my best option. Got settled in about 20 after 4. Wiped the sweat off me and about 5pm 3 doe slowly made the way towards me. Finally at 20yrs I made the shot. I hit her to high up but luckily came out good on the back side. Called my wife and she drove down with our 5yr old to tag along on the track. She made it about 80yrs. First time my son got to tag along and he loved it. Driving home he asked if we could cook some of the meat tonight!! Yup he's totally hooked. She's almost all cut up. I have to say I love taking a doe early with the bow its a great confidence builder for me!!

Phade.. All great questions. The 7 acre piece is brand new. Its tough to scout due to limited area (im not the trespassing type). Their are few really defined trails leading to and from the fields. I would classify the area as bedding / transition. Im very limited in strategies and hopefully I can answer more of those questions as I have some stand time in the coming weeks!! Being more analytical in the field is something I really need to improve on (not just at work). Appreciate your insight!! My other 3 acres are right in my back yr. Its basically an over grown field with a ton of cover and food that backs up to a 20 acre wood lot that has hunting pressure. Hopefully my plots will help direct there travels. But its tough getting them to cross my 175ft wide strip.

happy b day

Phade, I appreciate your insight and think there is deff value in what you say. I have two hunting spots that together total 10 acres, both surrounded by ag. My tactic is to hunt them light only in good wind and hunt them hard from Halloween to Veterans day when activity picks up! I conveniently schedule my vacation then. What's ur thoughts?

Yeah not overly excited with temps reaching 80 Saturday especially when I cut up my deer.

Got out with maybe 40 minutes left tonight saw zero. Luckly my stand is right in my back yard. Really pumped for my new spot this yr but wont be able to hunt it for a week or two but should produce a ton of activity!!

looks terrible mid 70's all week and weekend. I kinda lost some excitement, time to put on my light pants and go commando!!

That's a good one. My wife always says goodbye to me (she did already) & ill see u in 2 months!! Game on

I got to the point I wouldn't shoot a buck with the bow unless it was to the ears or wider. After no success for a number of yrs I lost my confidence. It had been so long since I shot one with the bow I felt like I was starting all over. I'll never forget the droptine buck that I drew on 3 times by my stand opening day one yr, I was so out of touch shooting a live target I kept waiting for the perfect shot as he walked by me three times and finally up the hill with two does and another decent buck. Finally I decided to start with a doe. After putting a perfect shot on her I started to rebuild my confidence. Then came the 7pt that only ran 50yrs, now I was feeling good. Then the following yr when the 120inch 8pt offered me a 12yrd shot he ran about 5 steps, stood there and dropped. I still will wait for a big buck but I would rather take a doe with the bow vs the gun to help keep my confidence for the big guy!!

thanks, glad its all squared away

Great topic Gman. Hunting my dads property when I was younger there were a lot of deer then it started to decline to the point where a few yrs ago I was tracking hours in the stand vs deer sightings. I contacted the DEC and they came out and walked the land and came up with management plan. If we completed the whole thing we could get paid. So we did it. The forested sectioned off the property and started marking tree's to cut. We did most of the work in the winter when we had the free time. We finished with in the time frame and got some money in the process. We also cleared about an acre for a food plot. The deer sightings have since dramatically increased and the trail cam is loaded with pic's every weekend from the food plot. We have also been planting desired tree's each spring!! Trying to manage your land is for very gratifying and well worth it. I always say doing something is better than doing nothing!

Both of my 8pts came on morning hunts but I view morning and evening equal.

I don't think there your friends in my opinion. Id be livid if my so called friends did that to me. Id be careful the farmers got $3500 in his mind, $3500 towards our high taxes.
-
Id have to think its someone u know or possibly your neighbors. If I were looking for stands id go to places id been where I knew stands were. It would be dumb to just start hitting woodlots.
-
wow id be so freakin made. I always wanted to invent something similar to onstar where u can pull up the exact location of the garage there sitting in with a couple of looser laughing about their heist. Maybe I should invent that!!
