  1. I'll be that guy and ask it. Your brother shoots a deer... a bb at that, and then says you can have the meat? Why'd he shoot a small ass button buck if he didn't want to eat it? Or is your freezer empty?
  2. similar to yours. pairs, but never more than pairs.
  3. that sucks man. It's one thing to be unsuccessful despite effort, but it always hurt when you know it was on you.
  4. I'd suggest you start with lights just to be sure you like the night hunting first. I'd guess the resell would be pretty decent even here on the board if you upgrade or dont like it.
  5. a guy with a bunch of guns as his avatar afraid of coyotes? Come on man... I'm pretty sure you're older than me, but I've been in the woods since I was 6 and even had a few murder something at dusk 40 yards from my stand during archery. Enough to make the hair on my neck stand up, but nothing to incite fear over. The worst I can ever remember is running into some with my chocolate lab on a hike. I was 12 and had my .22 with me, still they ran.
  6. careful there breitbart, people dont read articles only headlines. Nowhere does the DEC call them vermin.
  7. There already is no bag limits or tags. I dont disagree that there shouldn't be an open season. Do you honestly think that simple change would wipe them out?
  8. he's demonstrated on this thread that he doesn't care about research and facts lol if you don't think money makes the world go round...
  9. this right here. The pool is about relaxing for me too. I'm constantly on the move and I need it. But I couldn't imagine sitting in the sun baking and drinking and not being able to jump in and cool off.
  10. I think pools are a little different. Yeah on a saturday afternoon you can go hang with neighbors, but I can't think of the times when I'm a hot sweaty mess doing yard work or detailing the car that I just do a quick jump in to cool off. The benefits of not having to pack all the crap and stuff are there for me. At least for now. Mine's not too bad. I have a brominator. Basically check and balance once a week, which usually isn't much more than baking soda. Vac once a week, sometimes twice in early summer. I try and pick a day when I can be out getting some sun myself. with these teen temps and cloudy skies, i'd love to have to vac my pool right now in 80* temps haha
  11. i dont think any of them said you can't irradiate them (although I'd point to the pigs down south as an example of just how hard it can be). These aren't big ass slow moving buffalo either btw. The point is that you're not really doing shit by shooting a few during the fall. You really need to spend a lot of time and effort trapping them. Please read the links, they're not even liberal fluff, they're from outdoors and hunting sites.
  12. it seems that a few in this thread have done zero research and some of the suspects I know don't believe in global warming and I presume also believe the earth is flat so I'm not sure why I bother. There is a real bad habbit that many hunters have (myself included) and that is to make assumptions off of your own back 40, or assumptions on how you think nature works. People dedicate their lives to these studies and some guy writes a few sentences and calls them fact based on a dozen sits in the deer woods. Best example of this is deer numbers. I haven't seen a deer on my 10 acres all year, numbers are way too low! robble robble robble. For the love of God at least educate yourself on some of these topics, isn't that what we ask the anti's to do?
  13. i at least jump in almost every night too, I love it. I've learned from many that the hot tub is nice, but the idea quickly wears on most that get them.
  14. Slight departure from the fun. I've literally been out once, but I enjoyed it and I'm going again. If you own a deer rifle you can get in entry level under $500, and that's if you want to go at night. If you want to hunt like the guys from NY downwindoutdoors (check out their youtube - https://www.youtube.com/user/DownWindOutdoors), you just need your deer rifle and a mouth call. Thanks to wnybuckhunter I got a great deal on a used primos alpha dogg, which retails for $230. $230 caller, there are cheaper ones https://www.amazon.com/Primos-Hunting-3756-Electronic-Predator/dp/B005A3FWNW/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=primos+alpha+dogg&qid=1580406914&sr=8-2 $80 gun light https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07GB122TF/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1 $35 headlamp https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07NRJ938L/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 $30 decoy (not necessary) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004WIU59M/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 $40 for rechargeable batteries and a charger I encourage those who were hesitant to give it a shot. If you really love it, you can then look into thermal and night vision etc. But it is a good time and I'm not ashamed of hunting them. Thank you to moog, treeguy, wny and all the others who have pointed me in the right direction and got me off my ass and into this season.
  15. i have 3 boys under 7. We use the piss out of the pool, so I dont mind the upkeep. There will come a day no doubt though that for just the wife and I it'll feel like too much work.
  16. my parents weren't rich and they weren't poor. I hope to do better, but i'm very careful about it. Most of my hard work and the success in my career comes from the need to work hard for everything. My kids will need that edge and at the same time I'm hoping they dont have to wash dishes while in college. But your ass better be working in the summer kind of thing. I love that my kids and wife can have nicer things and that we have the home and opportunities we do. I get way more out of that then the stuff I buy myself. I'll add though... I subscribe to you only live once, so i'm not hoarding my earnings to be handed down either haha.
  17. and in case you missed it Phade, I did take action in opposition to the bill that was proposed to ban tournaments.
  18. and just to be clear, my only point posting those articles above was to educate some that hunting contests aimed at predator control is a losing argument. Just do the tournament because you want. Tell them you're selling the hides at least. What to Do, and When If you are intent on knocking down coyote numbers to boost deer or small game numbers on your land, forget plugging the random predator during deer season and focus on the fawning season. Removing coyotes from the landscape in April or May means there is less time for other coyotes to move in. Most coyote control efforts in sheep country, for instance, take place right before or during the lambing season, for good reason. That’s when it helps reduce livestock loss the most. Just be prepared to put lots of effort into it. In order to have any impact on coyote numbers, you’ll need to kill upwards of 70 percent of the population. That’s a lot. Few of us have any idea how many coyotes are out there, but the good news is that populations are probably not as high as you think. Whether there is one coyote per square mile or 10, you’ll still need to invest lots of effort into it if you expect the slightest benefit. And you still might not see any noticeable results. A study in Georgia examined fawn survival and coyote populations in conjunction with coyote removal on two wildlife management areas. The first year, trappers removed an estimated 81 percent of the coyotes from one wildlife management area and a similar number on the other. Fawn survival went up on one area but did not improve on the other. The study’s authors concluded, “coyote control may not achieve management objectives in some areas.” If you still insist on undertaking some method of control, focus on trapping. Hunting is fun and a skilled hunter can rack up some impressive numbers, but it can’t produce the numbers of coyotes that a trap line can. Traps work 24 hours a day and a good trapper can set dozens in a day. Even the best hunter can’t cover as much territory as a good trapper. There is a reason no scientific study has used hunters instead of trappers.
  19. the science is a little mixed on that. Certainly it's mixed enough, that you can't definitively state that. While I agree that it helps, it's not as great a factor as you may think. At the end of the day, you should hunt them because you want to and it shouldn't matter. But one hunter should never tell another hunter how to feel (I know you're not doing this, but I want to restate it). True predator population control would come from trapping, not hunting and even trapping has shown to have little or no affect over a span of several years. Most of these below cite studies and the blogs/articles are a lot easier to digest then linking you to the study https://www.outdoorlife.com/blogs/game-changers/does-predator-control-really-work-science-behind-hunting-coyotes-and-other/ https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/why-killing-coyotes-doesn-rsquo-t-make-livestock-safer/ https://www.fieldandstream.com/predator-control-truth-about-coyotes-vs-deer/ https://www.grandviewoutdoors.com/predator-hunting/coyote/shooting-coyotes-save-deer-populations
  20. well stormy is gone, so maybe there's a chance we make it to 5 and keep our civility haha I'm the same. Stopped actively fighting about 3 or 4 years ago. But I do not support it. that is one stance I've been clear on haha
  21. yeah it was a super clown move. I've got a bipod trigger stick and a chair coming in tomorrow, vs my monopod and cushion to help get me elevated. I think tomorrow I might go out again but to my wife's grandfathers farm where I know the open orchard and hedgerows will be much easier to hunt. Plus i have a lot more pics of yotes there.
  22. house we bought when we moved back has a nice inground. kidney shaped, deep end, not too big, not too small. Basic landscaping and a heater. The fence was older post and chickenwire and we just replaced it this fall. with taller semiprivate vinyl on one side and aluminum in the back. Just the fence itself was $7k and we got a deal... You can see how these things grow in price, but I agree that $400k is a little insane and seems very high.
  23. very good point. If you don't shoot a matthews you for sure are closer to a caveman than a homosapien.
