  1. if any of you are really taking Carey serious that's funny. dude is a comedian, and lately a bad one without a good movie since liar liar. It's an attention grabber just like Morgan.
  2. I think few of us view a 2.5 year old as a failure. We just hope and try for the mounter. But I think you realized your issue "time in the field". I had 130 and 140 class bucks on trail cams and only actually saw a few 130's. You can work your ass off in the spring and summer but it wont matter if you cant get the time in the woods with a little lady luck on your side. Honestly I enjoy the prep and QDM. I just love being outside, so if I fail to grow the bigger deer, I'm not going to lose sleep over it. this is where I agree with phade. 15acres of apples is almost too much. A localized 5 acre plot of a few trees surrounded by corn is easier to hunt as there are only a few approaches to the area that funnel them from corn field to apples. In between is the bedding area you want to hunt.
  3. firefox and adblocker plus seems to have let me down in this case
  4. I hope you're not calling me a yuppie in a sub-division because you're so far off it's laughable. But honestly, how many men do you know who own a thousand acres? And for what it's worth, this is the united states of america. Our politicians decide. Not me, not any organization and not any farmers. If you don't like that, there are plenty of areas around the world where warlords rule and can implement which laws they chose or do not. those pushing for land owners to decide what happens on their property also seem to be the same who are pushing to simplify the confusion with our hunting regulations. Do you have any idea how confusing things would get if land owners made their own rules?
  5. with that logic, I should be able to hunt day or night, over bait piles and all year long right? You don't own the deer just because you own the land.
  6. they still owe us for the small pox infested blankets. And I do see your point. But I still feel the general bowhunter may not have all the facts. If you were to ask America to vote on having a $1k per family stimulus package; what do you think the outcome would be? People would be jumping for joy with the checks as they arrived. But only a small percentage would understand the long term ramifications the China borrowed stimulus would have on the economy. It's why sometimes, you can't allow the people to vote on things.
  7. you'll find most suny schools have solid programs at decent rates. But the school is not what employers look at. It's the experience and work ethic. If she's the brightest bulb in the store, but she can't communicate then it doesn't matter. Work as hard as you can to getting her a good internship junior/senior year and even with a below 3.0gpa she will be fine. Look less at the reputation of the school and more at the reputation of the program at the school. For example, I went to UB. Their business, engineering and pre-med programs are highly ranked up with the private schools. But other programs are not. Would I have receieved a better education at RIT or Clarkson? Probably. BUt so much better that I'm 10's of thousands of dollars in the hole? Probably not. Good luck to your family and daughter.
  8. interesting. I had 6 of my trees bare fruit last year. This year I'm hoping for double that. Those that bore fruit sucked in the deer to where I'd have them just grazing my backyard. Although, I do not hunt the trees. I hunt the woods and a funnel that leads from the bedding area and a cornfield to the trees. So my hope is the more trees, the more deer.
  9. i bet crossbows would pass. I think there are enough people who dont feel strongly enough on the subject where they would see no harm in voting them in. But I also feel this is very similar to gun control. Polls show the majority of NYS believe in the SAFE Act. To me, all that tells me is there are enough non-gun owners who aren't affected by the act to vote in favor. Which brings us back to square one. What really is the impact of allowing crossbows into the archery season. And I'd point you to the report linked in Phade's original post, and others posted throughout the year. So every bowhunter, may really not know what they're signing up for. Just like all the Obama voters found out.
  10. where do you keep getting these member statistics from? You know how "the people" can control an organization? Not pay their fees. It's quite obvious there are enough members who still believe in the cause to pay their annual fee. Do you think any organization doesn't have change in membership? Nice and hypocritical for you to get all upset at me for jumping to conclusion about someone else hunting, and then for you to do it yourself. And your comments are fair, and I was a little annoyed at some of the posts when I made that comment. I guess my point was that while it's not always the case, it seems a majority of crossbow proponents are not diehard bowhunters. (not all, but most). and fwiw, I've never hunted over a food plot. I have stalked, I have hunted from the ground with a gun and 35' in a tree. I hunt all 3 seasons and love all 3 for the challenges they each posses. I've shot big deer, small deer and inbetween. First and foremost I'm an advocate for the right to hunt. I don't see the NYB opposition to crossbows as being anti-hunter. Like I and others have said over and over, if you want to hunt early season learn to shoot a bow. I've yet to hear your reasoning on why you dont hunt with a bow. the more and more I read your posts, the clearer it becomes you have an issue with the NYB. That's fine. I'm sure you have your reasons. But I'm wondering if your argument is more with their leadership than it is with the topic of this thread. yeah I've been hearing that for 5 or so years now.
  11. I don't know why you have to belong to NYB to be opposed to crossbows. For some reason it's being thrown around on this board that the 2k members of NYB are the only ones opposed. I know several non-members opposed. I also know several non-members of the coalition that are for crossbows. Please for the sake of this debate, lets stop using this number as the end all be all of those in support or against. What you can do, is ascertain that this number is so strongly opposed that they've forked over some cash and in some members case their time to oppose it. It keeps being referred to as a minority and not speaking for the people, but the even smaller and younger group known as the "coalition" somehow can speak for bowhunters? It's so black and white, I'm not sure why we keep debating it. Some are for, some are against them. Both sides make valid and stupid arguments.
  12. i hope so. i have over 10 trees I've spent substantial time preparing to "feed my deer"
  13. Figured you'd result to childish name calling. Shoot a nice buck with a bow and maybe you'll finally get "it".
  14. wow 40 seconds until the video started. that's a good tip. Mine was all flocked up too. I put it outside in the sun and used some sticks in the ground to keep is spread out in the right position for some time.
  15. this thread title leads to so many possibilities. but I wont derail it. i've had good luck with quaker boy and primos. I think they're good starter calls until you get serious.
  16. I can wrap my head around it. You can't. All I've ever tried to do is get you to understand that it's not black and white. There is gray area. And nothing about what is a bow and what is not is fact. If you can simply admit that there are varying views on the subject and that there are a number of people on each side of the argument then we can stop arguing and accept that there will always be disagreement on if a crossbow should be classified as archery equipment. It's funny how I view NYB as an organization aimed at protecting my rights and you view them as anti-hunter. It all depends on what side of the argument you stand on. You have every right to establish an organization that is opposed an in opposition to the NYB and grow your numbers of that organization to greater numbers then the NYB. We have done nothing wrong or illegal. We are just a group of people fighting for what we believe in. We are no different than the NRA. Do you feel the NRA speaks for all gunowners? There are a few of their opinions I disagree with; so what does that mean? They have anti-gun organizations opposed to their beliefs too. Is one group right and the other wrong? There are pro-life and and pro-choice groups out there. Is one a bully? Is one speaking for all? The answer is no. So please, join the coalition if you feel so strongly about it, or start your own group. In 1991 17 bowhunters did start their own group. Write your politicians, make some phone calls. Hold a protest. There is nothing stopping you or others, and you're just upset that the NYB have been successful in their mission. You're no different then a Yankees or Duke hater. You're a keyboard warrior hating on others success and do nothing about it.
  17. yes they certainly have dropped the ball when it comes to establishing an image of the opponent. The Obama campaign did a great job of labeling Romney as the rich white out of touch guy. But they've recognized this and just released a report where they plan to address that http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/ten-ways-republicans-want-change-next-election-105724986--election.html
  18. the repubs will have a field day with this failed bill in 2016. The whole intent was to pad his campaign and its backfiring horribly. I love it.
  19. Hope's not all lost my friend. There are people my age and younger who are doing their best to maintain tradition and history. Technology has certainly changed a lot of things in all aspects of life, and I believe it's fair to adapt and adopt some of it as improvement. But don't let a few bad apples more interested in playing Halo and Call of Duty instead of hunting ruin your perception. The love and passion for the outdoors is still there. There may not be as many people still interested in hunting, but plenty still love to hike, bike and fish. As long as we hunters can coexist with the other groups who share our passion for the woods and critters, there will be money and time devoted to protecting it. I've seen mountain bike numbers grow huge just in the last 10 years. It means more groomed trails to get us deeper into the woods and more money put into state parks and statistics to prove to the state we need to keep them maintained. As far as how "we hunt". Short of changing equipment, hunting can still only really be a human vs an animal. Tree/ground blind/stalking. Maybe some new tech, but I'm not sure it can change drastically.
  20. believe it or not, you should actually leave both eyes open. I can't ever seem to do it, but professional archers will tell you this is the proper form.
  21. you might have issues with those trees. they appear to be growing from the ceiling So I did quite a bit of heavy pruning the last 2 weekends. I was sure to cover the wounds with sealant, but do you guys think this snow/cold/ice is going to be detrimental?
  22. wait, so they don't compromise... but they do? It's funny that it's all about wanting in on the season until you lose your campaign year after year. Now you want compromise. Are you a member of "the coalition"? If not; why don't you join? I felt strongly about my cause, so I joined an organization aimed at protecting it. I did the same for the NRA. If you believe the number of members in the "coalition" outnumbers the NYB... well you're out of touch. I'm tired to death with the recurve argument. Comparing a compound to a recurve is much easier to do then a crossbow to a recurve. And guess what? You can still hunt with a recurve. And guess what? if compounds were illegal you could bet your life I would be hunting with a recurve. I've yet to hear a good argument from someone who is not a manufacturer of a crossbow, on why they should be allowed. All I hear is "because I want one, that's why". And for the 3rd time. I'd fully support your right to use one in regular and late season if you wanted.
  23. The compromise should be the way it used to be. Crossbows during regular and late seasons and during archery for handicapped and elderly. (I would advocate for making the process of gaining permission not difficult or very expensive). If you want to really bow hunt bad enough, you'll pick up a bow and learn. If you don't want it that bad, then continue to gun hunt.
  24. this is me right now. Some of you might know why. some deer have joined in
