  1. if i think about skinning deer though it's better to start where the sack was and run up the hind quarter between both rounds. to start peeling away the hide, versus going down (hung hind quarters up). so what you're saying does make sense and could only help.
  2. not much of anything no. same concept when skinning different areas like legs. you've got me thinking now. i've used a a couple different styles of "gut hooks" and then got more hair from what i remember. knife cutting from inside out and pulling up with two fingers on your other hand. first incision is best chance for hair. thinking about it i'm poking in straight but any movement is sternum to crank just enough to get three fingers in, then it's up to sternum the blade goes.
  3. the way i explained it there's really none. is it mostly from getting into the sternum? i don't really cut into that.
  4. DEC funding used some of our license sales dollars to partially fund giving bucks vasectomies with hopes sterilization would be a humane NYC way of thinking means to solve the issue of deer over populating down there. it wasn't expected to work and didn't. they did it anyway to make down state folks happy.
  5. it happened and was totally legit. no way to legislate DEC agreeing to a down right stupid use of funds. the data collection that used as justification just wasn't worth the cost.
  6. thank you for fixing the deer down in NYC.
  7. don't take this personal but you hang out with a bunch of ignorant individuals or informed poachers.
  8. i don't do others are saying. i do the whole process with a small 2.5" blade lansky pocket knife. put deer on it's back and stand between its hind legs. pinch and pull up hide in front of crank or udder getting it away from guts. make first incision. two fingers in a peace sign guide other hand with index finger on blade spine. run up to sternum then stop. go back down and remove parts and leave as much hide as possible. make sure to cut away diaphragm at sternum. plant one boot under a knee and tip it up to bedded position to let it all drain a bit. recap story to a buddy or reflect. pull it away and tip it back over to work out guts accept anus and wind pipe. reach up into chest as high as you then with knife hand and index finger back on blade spine cut it all free. half the time to hearts toast but if not then put in a ziploc bag. go back to the rear. reach as far in as possible pinch lightly and pull any turds back into the intestines. use small piece baler twine (better choice) or zip tie to tie off, pinch and cut in between. same for a box on a doe. fold the knife back up, reverse nitrile gloves, and put it all in the zip loc bag you brought it in with. this dad then uses scent free scott septic safe baby wipes to get my arms clean from elbows to wrist. should be little blood or mess (unless i'm really rushing). it's protected and not opened up to let dragged leaves get up in there. plus little hide is off the bottom round so there's less waste. what i do.
  9. once with a doe that i dropped right behind the house. i bled it out first. opened it up into a wheel barrow in the garage. a tall plastic barrel would work better. wouldn't bother with a buck to heavy.
  10. Had intentions if making it to bowhunt state land. Never made it. Hunted a short sit Saturday after loading up a tractor trailer with hay. Managed to get out this afternoon. Lots of doe and a few little/young bucks weekend. No shooters. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  11. stuck in the office now. snowing some more here. definitely getting out in the morning, evening is screwed as we have to be somewhere. hopefully sunday i can get out too. barely a weekend warrior this year.
  12. cheapest cams don't have the feature but many out there that do. just takes a picture after however many seconds or minutes it's set to and within whatever time period of the day or night you set. basically a time lapse. i use it a lot at field or food plot edges.
  13. having some form of mentoring is a beautiful thing even if not in person. definitely some knowledge lurking these forums. you're never too experienced to learn something new. i hope you keep the momentum rolling, because that's pretty awesome.
  14. now deer look for cover and food or simply come out at dark unless it's not hunted much. also those standing carbs (corn) should have the deer piling in.
  15. i actually haven't made any of them yet. usually just get a stick the right size and put behind the top of the cam housing. that requires a strap though. those brackets i think are less visible to people if that's a concern. i must just be a procrastinator!
  16. i thought i had another set still on in my google photos but must have took them off and deleted them. trail passes right by the tree leading to or from a field. deer are spitting distance but the camera is up 7 feet. they rarely ever seem to notice it. if you put it at eye level a deer will eventually check it out and sniff it. i bring scent free field wipes with me to wipe them down or use nitrile gloves if they're low. also they to use rubber boots and not touch vegitation. leave less presence.
  17. Higher up at maybe just under 7 feet. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  18. don't give them up. put them up higher and/or use field scan mode during idea times.
  19. i've used other brands like Remington label but Hothands brand posted seem to work best. why? i have no idea.
  20. i remember the bucks i passed that i shouldn't have more so than the bucks i should've passed and didn't. maybe there's something to what he said.
  21. we've had two commissioned, built, and donated to the ECO's for use in our QDMA branch's area. they work.
  22. we just had DEC snag a couple and there's a another reported in the area of our QDM co-op. everybody being vested we share the description in emails between co-ops that border each other and on social media. community then keeps a watchful eye. something that does scare the hell of out them is take an older deer mount or dead bloated deer found and set it up on a saw horse in the bushes but clearly visible enough from the road. we'll here them shoot from the garage multiple times until they figure it out and then you hear tires lighting up. probably terrified their about to get nabbed.
