  1. i feel like some get sounds mixed up. a true snort wheez and deep drawn out roaring grunt versus a shorter tending grunt i only heard once we started knocking down more doe and passing more bucks to create some competition. pretty cool. i've heard the tiniest buck do it too. not just the big dominant ones that do it. also once we started doing the whole herd management thing and QDM i saw a dominant buck come in stiff legged, walking sideways, neck hair upright, and ears pinned back. coolest thing i've ever seen a deer do. way different than bucks getting run off in the past. ran off 2 of 3 other bucks there establishing peck order in October. one 2.5 yr old buck that ran off figured out quick that he should have. i wish i was close enough to hear any sounds they were making!
  2. either of you write down a confirmation number from your reporting? i used to but haven't kept them in awhile. moving i've realized i keep too much. plus i really don't keep a tally of deer i killed. some do. i couldn't tell you. i know it's probably a lot for around here.
  3. they want the information but sooner the better as final numbers are chugged, then compiled, and then published. it's a long process. by asking the question now i'd say report it anyway.
  4. leaving the office. everyone have a happy thanksgiving. i intend to be out in the morning despite the cold. i have a plan to keep warm. for anyone else going out stay safe.
  5. that's why i only shoot bucks with 3 pts or more. i need forks and utensils. i'm not a barbarian, that just stabs food with a spike antler to pick it up.
  6. It's of my very strong opinion that DEC jumped on the bandwagon that was already moving. while their 'Let them grow' pitch is very welcomed and helps, many groups and people have volunteered and spent countless hours to educate people on why and what it means. Take Culvercreek for example. His branch has its own thread on here. Also many have been practicing this aspect of quality deer management and by necessity encouraging their neighbors and others to do the same. The numbers of active branches like Culver's (and the one i'm with out this way) have more than tripled. The people actually letting deer walk or pulling the trigger is what's jump started the trend. realistically about any means necessary, AR's or otherwise, caps out at around 60% at the state wide level. the percentages are a feel good thing that can be tampered with though. the real take away is DEC should continue to be an out spoken presence toward education with as little agenda or "feelings first" mentality. also people don't need a degree or formal education to call BS. education and truth is everywhere now and at your fingertips if you have an open mind and willingness to seek it out.
  7. never used chest girth and i grew up on my immediate family's New England Poled Hereford (beef) farm. deer vary too much in size at the relatively young age they're taken at. i've always used a scale and zero is checked before weighing. last doe i took during bow season weighed 123 lbs dressed and i got 53 lbs of meat. i may have lost at most 2 pounds from trimming around where a coyote tried to snack on it right after it tipped over. my thing is i've taken doe ranging from 2.5 yrs old to mature that weighed that much. carass or bone weight will be significantly different within that age range which means the same for meat.
  8. it's a young doe.let it get some fawns under it and train them to take to that area and you have more behind the house.
  9. no time to pickup anything fancy. wife and i picked up a couple variety/seasonal packs Switchback Ale, Citra Pils, and Extra Pale Ale New Belgium Brewery Fat tire Amber Ale, Fat tire Belgium White, Pilsener, and Voodoo Ranger
  10. at the UHRV QDMA banquet we get our guns from Whitney's Sporting Goods. They came up with a Tristar O/U that seemed well made and very affordably priced. Never heard of it otherwise. Year before that i think they offered a CZ Mallard. With a room full of deer hunters it's something different that really draws interest. We'll have another one at the next annual banquet this coming spring. i always thought an over/under would make a great turkey gun. i'd never get one that didn't look traditional though.
  11. i'm pulling for ya! i almost bought that setup. just other stuff was a priority with selling and buying houses, plus some other stuff.
  12. little muscle development in both front and back. at 3.5 it would be more front heavy and stay lighter in the rear this far into the rut. that buck basically meets our voluntary antler restrictions here and we get a plenty of nice 2.5 yr olds that size that get shot.
  13. even if he misses the deer will get a severe concussion followed by internal hemorrhage as the 275grains passes by. haha
  14. all these deeper chested, big racked bucks.... i need to find something older than 2.5 yrs old myself. lol awesome buck with character! we've had some 140" 3.5 yr olds. some deer are just early bloomers. hard to tell how old that one was from dead deer pictures. seems middle aged.
  15. hind sight is always 20/20. i would've done the same thing. i've never taken that shot. it'd be just recovery. a lot of meat would be lost with the hard angle you described. i get trying to make a better shot happen.
  16. This weekend I made it out but only saw young bucks. Couple others took 2.5 yr old bucks on the farm. Couple others not far away took big ones for around here. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  17. heavy antlers. crazy for a buck to be that old. just doesn't happen around here unless you're deep up into the adirondacks. palmation is cool. i don't see that often even with really heaviest antlered bucks around here.
  18. that had to be a heavy front end. an atv with that many cc's aint small.
  19. people do it but it's a smaller target and not a guarantee in my mind. vitals are vitals and that's what i always aim for. head shot is technically a vital and despite i've done it in the past i don't do it. even less margin for error there and i wouldn't want to take off a jaw and have the deer suffer.
  20. i'd rather change draw length without a cam swap and instead with mods to help resale or more likely pass it on to a new bowhunter. changing poundage only through mods is a cool idea though that's outside the box at least.
  21. hunters don't realize the spine dips lower at the base of the neck. doesn't run right along the top back of it's neck you know of and see. not saying it's where you hit at all. just saying it's closer. a slug with no exit hole is a lot of energy that's dissipated in the deer which causes lots of shock and terminal damage.
  22. depends on the deer. a good buck you'll get a 10 lb neck roast. a bigger buck it'll be closer to a 17lb neck roast. seems like there's a lot of garbage connective tissue in there but it renders down or can be separated out easily if cooked a certain way. ton of good flavor in portions of neck meat. most just grind it up though.
