Did anyone watch the debate last night?

that's how king andrew's dad got his ass handed to him and that's the only way his jerk of a son will too. -
i haven't been out yet really. i resighted my bow in Sunday afternoon and then took a strategic several hundred yard walk from the range to my house, with a swamp and bean field in between. saw to doe in range but it was Sunday night and wasn't going to let one fly. especially with moving into a new house on the horizon. it'll get better when i get out but so far every pic of a taken deer is painful.

every party outside the democratic one at the state level continues to act like idiots. this state is mostly democrat. so you can't have the other minority divided and expect to win. being on the ballot under multiple lines is how local elected officials dominate an election. most are so tired of politics they don't do much research. seeing someone on multiple lines makes a statement though. to a democrat it's no longer a vote for a republican it's a vote for an alternative. i grew up around politics, and not just in a family who talks about it. every vote counts. independent party is a joke that's on the side of whatever party is in power. here it's Republican at state level for governor it's endorsing Cuomo. it's really pathetic. still that line means a lot. which is why i'm registered as an independent. problem is there's little steering the ship with the masses during a primary. -
i'm packing to move but pretty sure i've got the arrow i shot my first predator with. it's got a small puncture hole in the 4" vane where it bit it after the arrow almost pinned it to the ground.

shows that go in a different direction like that are good. like Jim Shockey's Uncharted. Their small crew as probably eaten crazy stuff from the wild.

yea ... Wild Within or something.

Cabelas sends me all kinds of literature for "Experiences" to book through them. One was a hunt for something, then when you get back to camp Steve Rhinella shows up cooks it up and hangs out. i thought that would be cool but never pulled the trigger. just sent me a catalog with all of them for 2019. he's not just a meat eater. he's bleeds conservation efforts. top show to watch in my opinion too.

i bought a french fry cutter that's something serious. fresh taters can even go right in there with really nothing else and they're still good. i think because they still taste like a potato and not like oil and grease.
-
i've used avacado oil more and more because i'm mostly grilling and it takes the high heat. not sure if you use that at all.

i learned the hard way that some marinades are time sensitive. have a couple that from stupidly successful chefs. bitched and complained when they used stuff i didn't really have on hand like ground star anise. then a crushed with walnut. let it set way too long and it overpowered the favors of the lean venison. marinate it for just only a handful of hours or less in a vaccuum bag and it was incredible.

that's right i forgot about the just use cream of _____ soup method! lol that's prevalent in some books i have.

i don't use Montecs now but use NAP Hellrazors that are basically the same thing. the machining isn't razor sharp finish but relies on the texture of the edge to cut too. if you try to sharpen them but don't take enough material then they'll cut not as well. take enough material off and they'll be shaving sharp. it needs to be balanced though like a tire. take equal stroke on all sides with even pressure. my edges look like a mirror when i'm done. i've been using a 1000 and 6000 grit whetstone. push forward with one pass toward the end at a time per side. otherwise you won't polish off the burr that's there. set your spin tester on a piece of white paper with a fine dot marked on it. spin the arrow slow with the point at the dot and see if it drifts. as you switch through each head once weigh them again to match weights of ones that spin true. seems like over kill but you can get them flying well way out passed yardage you should be shooting at game.

good there was some closure and you know that some isn't out there rotting under a bush.

Another age him and guess weight buck
dbHunterNY replied to turkeyfeathers's topic in Trail Camera Pictures
here's my thoughts. he's well fed but legs still appear right compared to depth of body. neck just isn't there even for as early as mid october for a 4.5 yr old deer by me. also antlers are scrubby but i wouldn't expect them that thin at 4.5 either. his waist line still has a bit of a taper despite the filled out fat gut. i'd put him at a plump 3.5 yr old right now. in another couple weeks he'll be running that off and show more of a streamlined look. plus he'll bulk up a little more in the front end. weight? depends on when in the season you shoot him. right now my guess for live weight would be high 180's, which puts live weight at something like 234lbs. -
hit the freezer hard again for tonight. have a 5.77 lb pork shoulder (or loin, don't remember) in the crockpot with seasoning and garden tomatoes (crushed and sauce). it'll be in there for probably about 10 hours.

i'm not a chef. been working on different recipes and acquiring others. the typical venison cook books floating around typical suck. all these sacrilegious camp recipes that tell you ridiculous things like boil steaks forever and throw in coffee grounds or add other meat to mask gaminess and make it taste like something else.

i'm tending to the 2nd largest QDM co-op in the state. work has sucked and i'm in the middle of closing on a new house that'll need work when i move in. what vacation? trail cams will be in full force to help me scout while i'm not there.

peak breeding and the associated stages of the rut happen at very very close to the same time every single year. i have a very limited time i can get out. with everything i'm involved in i can't take a week off or more. i just get a day here or there based on my schedule. i feel like the lunar table stuff is last in line to effect deer movement. pressure systems, temperature drops, inclement weather (feeding right before and after a storm), local resident matriarch doe in estrous, all seem to be more of a factor. i've got to do my homework and find out what's around and where so when i do get free time here or there i can go at it with a plan. this is obviously hunting farm land with smaller home ranges than say deep into big woods. otherwise you just have to find something worth it but can't really keep tabs on a deer.

in hind sight any deer i've lost seemed to be ridden with errors on my part that may or may not have avoided the loss. it definitely happens to a hunter if you hunt long enough and more than likely not just once. i think some really chaulk it up to shit happens more than they should but from what you've posted on here that doesn't seem to be the case with you. you'll lose sleep but try to not lose too much. you've already got some parts and pieces of what may have led to the outcome from what you typed. you get passed it. keep hunting. redemption is might be one hunt away.

lasagna (used some more ground) for lunch. pig/ham steaks with sweet pineapple gravy, taters, and carrots for dinner last night. the chest freezer before the move is still taking an ass kicking, or it's the other way around. not sure. no pictures i guess.
