  1. as steve posted, Seneca county should be good to go. only similar legislation out right now going through the process is senate bill S4825 that allows rifles in Orleans county. Another S5506 that makes rifle hunting permanent in Schenectady county.
  2. sounds good. i'll be there if remotely possible. i'm too far into the sticks and close to Vermont to offer up any spots. lol i work right in Albany though.
  3. i'm on the bandwagon that ....very young go with fingers and a recurve or longbow, but once using a compound switch to a release. biggest part of with the buckle releases especially with kids is getting one short enough. if they have to reach they'll form bad habits and pluck at it. jaws that aren't free floating like your target grade handhelds are actually better as it doesn't take much manipulation to close around the d-loop. my target stan releases are nice but i've seen an adult want to throw one that wasn't use to it and couldn't get the jaws closed. go with a hook style if you can find one that fits well enough. kids get frustrated with just trying to hook up sometimes.
  4. given how friendly she was, she was probably someone's pet.
  5. years ago i had two toms gobbling moving across the valley below. couple other hunters and i called to them. they cut off every call but wouldn't stop for nothing and never changed direction. it was close to 11AM so the others packed it up calling it a lost cause. toms headed out of sight into a swamp below. i unloaded, grabbed gear, and literally sprinted all the way down to the other side of the swamp from where they were headed. got setup quickly with a hen decoy at the edge of a field and next to a bar way. racked my Benelli pump as quietly as i could. i couldn't keep the mouth call in i was breathing so hard. took deepest breathes i could and got under control enough to throw out some assembly yelps. they sounded off just inside the swamp. throughout a quick cutting series and then shut up. a minute later they were right there. i saw them out of the corner of my eye working behind me and heard the spitting and drumming. they were literally working through the brush on the other side of the one i was back up to. they worked past and through the bar way. before the bigger one in tow was clear of the bar way for a shot the first long beard was putting, so i let him have it. aimed toward the base of the neck a few steps away, afraid i might miss. didn't even flop or flap. the running and gunning a long beard took all of about 15 minutes but about gave me a heart attack.
  6. i had a bird like that. problem was the roost and field were the neighbors. he'd never leave and showed up like clock work. had to have been an old bird. i watched him for 4 years. can't believe nobody on the neighbors got him too i told them where he was. he just disappeared. awesome bird! that's one large box call you sweet talked him with.
  7. http://www.lymeactionnetwork.org/ great resource and help people many who have lyme and first hand experience dealing with it. i'm in no way associated with them. they were just really knowledgeable and helpful when i found their booth up at a Glens Falls outdoors event.
  8. there's a lot of long standing myths about ticks, including the time limit to where you're safe. like a couple others said it's BS. anytime a tick bites you, the risk of infection is real. obviously the sooner you get it COMPLETELY you're better off and reduce the chance. tests give false negatives. older outdoorsman i know of felt like he had it, got tested negative and then got tested out of state and it came back positive. younger guy i know of face planted while getting out of bed one morning, then was bed ridden for days. father in-law didn't have a tick on him but saw the bite site. he went from a stout electrician carrying multiple sections of conduit and large rolls of wire at a time to barely being able to get out of chair. caused him to retire many years early. tell me that doesn't mess with life plans. was a whore of a tick too, as he had 4 out of 5 types from the one bite. aside from showering and checking as soon as i get home. my outer layers go in ziploc storage bags. i've got more permethrin on standby. i also wear Under Armour Compression Heat Gear that covers from shoulders to my ankles and wrists. also i've got the O'Tom tick twisters for removal. for the love of God don't smother the things to make them back out, especially with the essential oil remedies that are all over the web and social media right now. that increases likelihood of getting infected.
  9. what tournament you going to? good luck. time well spent regardless of how well you do.
  10. i know of a lot of people that have beat target panic of various forms, including myself. it just takes time and doesn't happen over night. don't give up that's a nice bow!
  11. Just seems like hair going different ways to me. Hips probably drop but with that posture it's be impossible to tell. If it was a sack of find it unlikely the deer would be doing what it's doing. Just my opinion. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  12. they eat a lot. We've seen them try to run down a fawn. Formed a wagon train with UTVs and ATVs and ran it off into the next country side. lol Probably just ended up with a turkey egg when it got there anyway. I wished they'd eat more woodchucks on the farm instead.
  13. All, Legislation S387 is a poaching bill that is almost passed but needs help! It increases poaching fines here in NYS for those bold enough to shoot a deer out of season or "jacking" them at night with a light, especially so for repeat offenders. the bill even includes provisions for temporary loss of hunting privileges. It has already passed in the Assembly. It has made it through committee unopposed and has been read for the last time in the Senate. All that needs to happen is for it to be scheduled for a vote on the Senate floor. Last year it was in the same situation but later in session. Not enough people expressed how important it was to them. It sat on a polished desk and never got scheduled and thus passed. There are only so many legislative sessions left to do so. Contact your Senator to let them know you want this to come to a floor vote and pass. More importantly contact Senator Flanagan's office as his office does the scheduling. If you live between Melville and Port Jefferson on Long Island then let him know your a voter and it's important it passes. Senator Flanagan's offices Albany Office: 518-455-2071 LI Office: 260 Middle Country Road, Suite 102 Smithtown , NY 11787 631-361-2154
  14. outdoor 3D should be into full swing by this weekend. a league open to anyone that i'm in starts this coming week. i've got to defend my title. looking to attend some local club shoots too. not sure i can commit to the NYS championship series west or east. too much on my plate and too expensive to attend multiple shoots per week.
  15. before i use it each time i throw it in the dryer to "recharge" it. i also practice pretty good scent control, so it's not like i'm throwing it on to hide stink. i like the stuff i've got for function more than anything. still can't afford to be careless with wind, but it seems to buy me a little time. regardless if i wear carbon, treated stuff, or use ozone it wouldn't change the way i hunt and precautions i'd take.
  16. damn kind of wished i was still living out in Buffalo now. sounds like it could be a good time.
  17. i like the changes they made and how they present the info gives a little better idea of the situation some areas of the state are in compared to others. that said i largely hunt both on and off QDM co-op land within the NE Hudson aggregate (actually the same county). i'm on good property for both on and off co-op land too. the differences experienced comparing both would blow your mind if on stand to witness it and isn't something you could get from looking that the report. probably in the area of 15-20% of the aggregate is voluntary QDM co-op property that on paper would carry the rest of the aggregate to a noticeable extent. DMPs are still crazy low. makes me wonder how the hell that system even works. good thing hunters are creatures of habitat and predictable.
  18. carbon "odor absorption" based clothes go into plastic totes. anything that's not that gets put into a cedar trunk with simple desiccant dehumidifier canister. no doubts ozone creates an environment that destroys and prevents bacteria. haven't done anything with ozone though.
  19. i haven't had my hands on one and don't know anyone that has them. pretty small work force that was putting them together with parts locally sourced. seems like it could be well made anyway. my first actual deer hunting bow was a compound from walmart that didn't even have a machined riser and i took deer and predators with it for a short while. that winchester will definitely serve the purpose. parts will be hard if not impossible to get but take care of it and it should last a while. no high end bow will give you the satisfaction of filling tags with your gramp's bow, even if it was barely used. i agree don't let it sit in a case or on a bow hanger. wear that thing out and make memories.
  20. I don't have that one but a different Cuddeback. I've got deer leaping through the frame. it's comforting when you know you're setup right and catching stuff like that. you're probably not missing much.
