...probably, leading to arguments and slander. I'd like to think you could talk about it. -
Urban legend deer situation. What would you do?
dbHunterNY replied to Al Bundy's topic in Deer Hunting
that's a good question... usually it runs off a little and you'd come back in the morning. that situation is a little different with it in that physical state. I think we're so programmed to follow the law I'm not sure people would think to shoot it or stop and think about it for a while. the ethical thing would be to shoot it. sounds like it's got enough left to gore you if you approached but not enough to get away. not quite sure what I'd do. if I was at my parent's house I'd call the others and then shoot it or do something. anywhere else I'd probably save my butt and let it suffer I guess. i'd hate to watch it until it died but I wouldn't want to leave and possibly lose it either. I'd have to by law. -
I've had good luck with Federal Fusion bullets and Rem Corlokts. I've used more expensive ballistic tipped ones in the past and always go back. Cheaper and they work well. I thought about trying Berger VLDs but don't want something that fragments once it's in the deer. I process my own deer is why and don't want to be picking out pieces. however, not sure what others think, but I do like 150 gr opposed to say 180 gr. for most game. I think the 180 gr punch through more, where the lighter bullets slow down upon impact more, dissipating more energy into the deer to put it down. if the bullet passes through the deer and keeps going that to me, in some way, is waisted energy.

I wouldn't do it in woods and then plots just get sprayed and tilled under.
-
nope. burning is a whole other animal there. some zoning laws don't allow it too.
-
haven't dealt with TruFire, only TRU Ball and they were same way. Good to hear there's more companies out there like that.
-
I heard it was unethical and didn't convey what hunters do in a good way. probably why it got cancelled.

don't have deer in the freezer so for insurance i'll be taking the TC Prohunter out. Otherwise it'd be the recurve.

we have one every year... every year (now the Saturday before opening day of regular season) we have a hunting party with family and friends. gather to hangout and talk about deer stories and enjoy company. it's a "big buck" pool. the list is written on a paper plate and it's 5 bucks. nobody wins year after year. more of a tradition to sweeten someones luck more than anything. I don't know of a single year someone got bent out of shape over it.

that seems crazy to report fake harvests to decrease the number of permits available next year.

yup I shoot 777 and have to clean in between. Blackhorn 209 is hard to find around here. BH209 is a lot cleaner and less corrosive though. I'd use it in a heart beat if I could find it.

some I've found call all steaks chops. not sure why as some will cut rounds (from the picture it says steaks) into steaks and call them chops. many times i'll get 4 roasts out of them. not sure where your 1 roast came from but some potential roasts probably turned into "chopped meat". in the picture the front legs are called roast and some turn neck into roast to separate the fibrous tissue and silverskin. I trim as much of that off as I can and put what's left into the grinder and fill burger sleeves. you didn't say you got any ground though. stew meat on my stuff are trimmings left from better cuts. Everybody does everything a little different. I agree with Predate's answers to your questions though.

not implying you don't have a right to talk about this stuff. not trying to cut you down either, sorry if what I typed came across that way. I think it's very admirable giving a DMP for 3A to a young hunter. just trying to point out why the DMPs are hard to come by and that I support controlling harvest numbers when need be by not giving many out. wasn't talking about land owner DMAPs but i do understand where you're coming from. I'm sure you're right that many would change their mind if they didn't have access to a handful of DMPs. here on the forums i don't maybe. almost all hunters in NY though I'm not so sure. most i know and hunt with fill their tags and don't get any extra at at all. maybe that's the exception, i don't know. DMPs for 4C are not as hard to get as 3A but still need some preferences points. now with the $10 fee i think they don't even bother. i could get a ton of DMAPS with the family farm and relatives lands. i don't though. i don't apply for DMPs and didn't even when it was free. most of my family, dad and uncles, don't like to shoot doe. they grew up in a heavily poached area and where in a similar boat you're in for deer numbers. even then some years i felt like a lot got shot by neighbors so I'd go elsewhere on public land to fill tags. the family farm taxes for property and school are well into 5 digits, but we still don't get "nuisance" permits or DMAPs. however, i think you do deserve a DMAP as a land owner with at least 50 acres. you bubba pay taxes on your land that supports some of the deer population so you've payed in more than someone who just bought tags. i know it doesn't go into the same pot but it's money going out all the same. that's what i think, not saying anyone is wrong. just trying to talk it out. -
better dump your ammo stockpile

not sure why it won't let me quote multiple people. maybe the new browser. anyway this and what culvercreek hunt club said it too, these guys have it right. if all gun owners got out and voted things would be different. lawsuits take a long time and are an up the cliff battle, not NRA's or NYSRPA's fault, just the way it is. voting for those who support your rights is the best and maybe only way to turn this around. don't just go vote. bring a friends too. that said I had some huge necessary expenses this month. next month I may very well end up with lifetime memberships. -

i'll admit that would be nice. -
it's a personal choice that said I think you're a very respectable hunter. many times people that kill the biggest buck aren't that great of the hunter. they were just in the right place at the right time and luck was on their side. on my parent's farm we actually prohibit shooting does. i'll kill 2-3 each year after not filling a tag with a buck. however, really no one else shoots a single doe. on rare occasion someone will get the green light to take one due to it being clearly wounded. no cousin's or uncles are allowed to because if one of them is allowed to shoot a doe, all the others have to get the opportunity to be fair. now 20-30 are taken in a season. we wouldn't see much of anything, opposed to the way things are now. it's not uncommon to see 20 deer in an afternoon or morning sit. holding out for a better buck is ok too if that's what you want. lee lakosky of the Crush TV took 7 years of bowhunting to kill his first buck. look at where he's at now. don't let anybody get to you by harassment due to you passing deer and not filling tags.

you might be on to something. also I'm thinking the ones in the wide open fields were to give the deer a runnin chance. seems fair in that context. lol -
seven figures would surprise me and I can't imagine the deal was that long term to cause such a high number, but I don't know anything about it. I've been told numbers by reliable sources for various famous hunting couples or hunters. weekend long appearances are pretty crazy. you won't hear me tell you numbers though. not my place to tell people what others make.

if you buy land out right, many times you can still rent out the land to other farms to grow crops on and it covers most costs of ownership if you do it right. you can also have sections logged, among other things. here in NY there's ag exemptions for deducting some of your taxes, if you've got 10 acres or more of tillable farmed ground. also like what was said there's government money that can be paided out to basically cover some costs of improvements to your farm or creating habitat for wildlife. certified wetlands and forever wild stuff is the most common around here because it requires really no money to put in, opposed to ground work or building construction.
-
a lot of the ground is continued leases I'd imagine that's how a lot of them do it. they don't own it all I'd imagine. I know they get a bit of money from appearances and seminars too which is probably how they come up with the money for leases. I'm sure they aren't getting filthy rich, but simply maintaining the lifestyle they want to live.

Not the biggest boy in the woods but glad I got him

congrats on the buck! -
hope you have good luck. any questions feel free to ask.

slug guns will have less of an effect due to a bit more mass than your average deer hunting bullet. the original post was asking about a 270 so I tried to post something about a rifle. I'm mostly with you guys shooting shotgun slugs though. that said the bullet in the video was a 300 gr 45-70 and it still affected it some, so I'd still pick and choose your shots like some of you have said you do.

a lot unload their guns like that here with no ARs. the argument I get from people is "what if the deer is running fast through the woods or field? I don't have time to count points! I've got to shoot!" I tell them if that's the case you shouldn't shoot anyway. that's how deer get wounded often. happened this year on the farm. in the area I know of half a dozen people that unloaded all the shells they could fit in their gun at deer this gun season. some were in the woods too! I'm no Annie Oakley but a pretty good shot from what I've been told. I can't see all those shots being carefully and even quickly aimed. -

buy the muzzleloader privilege and shoot a doe with your buck tag during late season. also you just got another doe tag for the muzzleloader privilege. you've got to get off the DMP thing though. they're considered as additional permits and you're not going to get them in a place were deer numbers are low. if every person could get and fill a DMP in that area you'd be really enthused next season, as there would be just about half as many deer as there is now. it's not an unlimited resource. That said I do hope changes are made to improve habitat and increase holding capacity so deer numbers pick up to help you folks out.
