  1. compass and map with knowledge how to use them... GPS work well but aren't infallible and completely dependable. topos are a must. with big changes in elevation they're needed to find low saddles and interconnecting ridges, not just for movement of the deer but for judging how thermals might be as well. I like to keep copies of blow ups of different areas I hunt like that if I find sign, bedding areas, etc. I mark them down without messing up the one i'm using for navigation. if you've got a smart phone or gps use software for those to mark these spots but sometimes they don't work. also using your smart phone like that will kill a battery if you're in a good spot with lots of info to record.
  2. both... I sit until I can't any more. then I stand. I rarely walk around. Point A to point B then don't move and don't make noise until something comes. I have still hunted but you really don't cover much ground doing it right.
  3. sometimes an apple, usually Cliff bars, and water depending on where I am. I don't eat breakfast before I go out and not a lot before I go out in the afternoon.
  4. I wouldn't call DEC but I would talk to them about everything. If they blew things off like who cares what you think. Then tell DEC there's some shady stuff going on in your area. They'll have more of a presence around without you turning them in. Then if they do as they do, they'll eventually get caught by their own doing and not because you turned them in. I don't agree with some stuff that's been posted, however i'm not going down that road. We as hunters should do our best to take game with an ethical shot and equally as ethical follow up shots as need be. Half heartedly throwing lead down range at a deer until it goes down is ridiculous. also feeling you need to take all the deer you want without tagging them. I don't care if you have a family to feed. If you do things right, work with land owners, or apply for DMPs in rural areas you'll get more tags than you know what to do with. I payed for my tags so you taking game without tagging them is like taking food off my table or money out of my pocket.
  5. you can always use a lesser weapon during a season. except for crossbows, unless given special privilege from disability. like said you can still bow hunt during the regular season but you must only use DMPs or your Regular Season tag.
  6. got to let them go if you want them to grow. hunters up in Washington county are getting there but down here in Rensselaer county hunters are still hard headed. he hadn't shot a buck in a few years due to passing younger bucks and he finally found a good one.
  7. Under photo sharing I had to change it from tapatalk to attachment. I think it worked.
  8. Hitting the different buttons for tapatalk and they all say the same thing. I'll work on it.
  9. My cousin Dave McGowan shot this big buck on morning of November 9th near Cossayuna Lake. The 8 pointer gross scored 136 1/8". It weighed 172 lbs field dressed. It was dogging a hot doe with 7 other bucks in tow. Without knowing any history I figured it to be 4.5 years old. I'd post pictures but I guess tapa talk photo sharing is disabled.
  10. not all model 700s are created equal... Dick's sells the ADL which is a lesser grade than the BDL and CDL. that's why it's cheap. both that and the TC Venture are great dependable rifles though. i'd go with the TC Venture given the choice. The Ventures accuracy is guaranteed and I'm a big fan of a short throw 60 degree bolt. I've taken a 2 quick accurate follow up shot to anchor multiple bucks in woods because of my rifle having a short throw bolt.
  11. been out of commission until now. only got to go out one weekend during bow season.
  12. definitely a monster buck. congrats to him!
  13. no dealers close but they're a quality built bow when compared to anything else out there. Anyone I know of that shoots an Elite has no complaints. Target shooter/hunters Levi Morgan and Darrin Christenberry are both now shooting Elite bows. Both of them can shoot and wouldn't shoot a lesser bow.
  14. I've seen a dozen or so deer taken with Rage heads and not one was lost. I still and will use them.
  15. depends if there's a big buck around and active then i'll bring the rifle. otherwise i'll bring the bow. might bring the bow regardless this year due to the car accident I was in. 30-06 might be rough on the healing shoulder.
  16. him: trust me. I know of a good spot. we'll make it work. know what i'm sayin'. her: (pointing) oohhhh... my gaahhhdd. is that a bug?!?! we don't have those down on [long-guy-lend]. that's gross! I don't like this we're going back! moral of the story: he never got any.
  17. Browning Abolt II stainless walnut stalker in 30-06 with Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40mm scope and a slogan outdoors rifle sling. Ammo I've got for it is 150gr Federal Fusion rounds. hands down better than my muzzleloader but that's not bad either. TC Prohunter with a slogan sling, Nikon 3-9x40mm muzzleloader scope with BDC 250 reticle. Shoots with 150gr 777, 250gr Hornady SST sabot, and Remington Cleanbore primers.
  18. hard to say but it looks heavy
  19. hope the person calls DEC and it gets somewhere. sounds like the deer will live and the arrow will probably break off or pull out. in there defense I've hunted rural areas and sometimes the bad seeds of our hunting community claim a tract of land is public when it's really not. sounds like the person has a good handle on where the deer will be... that's something DEC really needs. hopefully the buck won't get worse to the point an officer or dec has to shoot it in a ditch. horrible when an animal goes to waste like that.
  20. i'm with Danny in that there's nothing to keep your from buying a used bow on something like ebay. bows depreciate like cars so you can a good one really cheap. don't let anyone tell you your first bow has to be a lesser bow. I always tell people to buy the best equipment they can afford and stick with it. after you get something don't worry about what joe down the road has... what you got is the best you could have and it will simply do what you need it to. that said if you go new you're not going to get robbed. PSE, Bear, Diamond, and Mission all make affordable bows. also if you wait until early winter into spring you can get trade-ins or leftover model year bows cheaper.
  21. partially agree... temp (consequently latitude) effecting body size is called Bergmann's rule. I do think that Midwest bucks have little to do with feed, but more to do with average age structure compared to here. then after that a little has to do with mineral rich soil. feed wise we've got everything they've got in general, not saying a particular local area.
