i have no doubts savage will come out with a completely new rifle and have it be a dud. accurate rimfire and varmint rifles are their wheel house. right now i'm contemplating if i should just go with a Savage 17hmr or wait for this new rifle. 17hmr doesn't have a whole lot of killing power out past 150 yards. with any wind it'd be a good shot to focus on head of a big woodchuck over 150 yds. comparing cases this 17WSM should bark a little bit louder than the 17hmr but may still be quiet enough. it's loaded to a high pressure but still at least half as loud as a 223 Rem CF i'd think.

wood stocks get scratched and beat up but look and feel better than many (cheap) synthetic stocks. people say there's a difference in recoil but i'll be damned i haven't figured it out yet. there's a lot of good rifles out there with nice triggers, that shoot well. I've got a Browning Abolt II in 30-06 and it handles like an extension of me but picky when it comes to ammo. I've shot lots of both and never had a failure from a Rem 700 or Win 70. weatherby vangard II's are nice too, TC ventures and Tikka's feel cheaper but know to be shooters. Same with Savage and I love the accu-trigger too. If i was to buy another bolt action rifle it'd have an aluminum bedding block stock, nice trigger around 3lbs, and a 60 degree/short throw bolt. for shotguns I like to stick to pumps - the Browning BPS is completely ambidextrous, Rem 870 is very popular and dependable, Benelli Supernova's (w/ comforTech stock) are light yet don't pound you with recoil and mine seems to take whatever i throw at it. my mossberg 500 i don't like nearly as much as the others but it works and was cheap, but all the above are affordable and dependable being pumps.

Feb 28th Rally in Albany... Anybody going? I am and others I know are too. This is going to be one to attend and should be pretty big. More info below.... The New York State Conservation Council urges your participation in the Gun Rights Rally and Lobby Day to be held in the Well of the Legislative Office Building in Albany on Thursday, February 28, 2013, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The theme of the Rally is "The NY SAFE Act Must Go!!" Organized by the NYS Rifle & Pistol Association with cooperation from the Shooters Committee On Political Education, this is an opportunity for you to join with other sportsmen/women to let Governor Cuomo and state legislators know of your strong opposition to the recently-passed NY Secure Ammunition and Firearms Act. If you are gun owner, you need to be in Albany on February 28. According to SCOPE, "We are being called to Albany on February 28th to make our voices heard as one united coalition. The Governor's SAFE Act does nothing to keep anyone safe. sooo... i think it's a great thing that manufacturers are sticking up for civilians' rights.

definitely carbon. they do make wooden printed on finish for carbon arrows. it takes some practice. after the first shots it's easy to be hitting on target, but you have to hit dead on with the first shot while bowhunting.

the secretary was surprised because they're in a separate world down there in NYC. also, yea i looked into the cost a little bit too and it'll most likely cost a lot. many may not be able to afford it. also, insurance is too subjective with something not established like this. not so much worried about this being passed as much as making sure it does not go unnoticed. can't have it slip through like the SAFE ACT.

if i could i'd buy 1000 rounds of 223 Rem and then they'd "know" i have an AR-15. when they show up i'd show them my bolt action savage varminter in 223 Rem and then i'd show them the door. too bad i can't get a hold of the round i shoot. i've got 130 or so right now but come time the woodchucks come out that'll not last too long.

...also your point of impact will change a little. i put a Burris Speed Bead on my turkey gun and it works great. dial it in at 10 yards and you got pin point precision. last long beard i called into 5 steps by the time he came into the open. head was moving too much so i aimed right at the base of his neck. it hit the ground hard and didn't flop once. if anything else was different i probably would've missed. extremely tight patterns have their downfalls.

i've got lots of different turkey shells and choke tubes for my 12ga turkey gun haven't found that combo that pushes out beyond 50 yards that makes me all warm and fuzzy yet. people that say they can kill turkeys at 70 or 80 yards with hevi-shot are just plain unethical. haven't found a choke that works for almost everything. doesn't seem to be any reasoning some combos just work... that said i'd start with a PureGold or Indian Creek turkey choke. seem to work well with a lot of different combos, but no guarantees if you're real picky or shooting out past 50 yards. biggest thing is keep in mind getting a choke that says right on the packaging that it will work with loads like hevi-shot.

i will say a tractor is where it's at. i can get any place with my Kubota B7200 4x4 that you can get with an ATV with brush cutter in tow. before i got that i had just bought a house with a little over 2 acres of grown up fields with sapling trees and thick weeds chest high. i used a Honda Foreman 450 with a tow behind Swisher. it worked the clutch a bit hard to go slow enough and the belt on the swisher would slip if i went any faster. if you keep on it when it's half that or preferably less that setup would work fine.

honestly i used hunting knives more and more until the wife and i bought a set of Henkels. we got "forever sharp" and they're sharp but not a true sharp (fine serrations). they work well for everyday kitchen work, however i like my sharpened hunting knives for raw meat. hate the 90/10 angles rather just have 20 on both sides. Henckels other knives that aren't "forever sharp" are great and I'd go with them. I knew it before i bought the forever sharp stuff and will never let my wife talk me into a set again. what's really nice for the kitchen as well as the field is Smith's reverse carbide and ceramic sharpener. get the knife blade a little soapy with dish soap and touch it up with the ceramic side and you can shave with it.
