The Expanded Antler Restrictions - Who is excited?
SteveB replied to TheHunter's topic in Deer Hunting
Yep - killing 1.5 and 2.5 6 or even 8 pt do a lot to improve age structure. I am sure it is far more effective then not shooting young deer - oh wait, they are young deer. -

And the least effective. -
I've tried pointing this out before. They post 100's of bucks taken every year in NY older then 1.5's - most from non AR dmu's. And I'll bet only a fraction of hunters taking such bucks send in photo's. I'm sure this will get turned around to say "imagine the magic that would happen with ar's)

Again with the assumptions. 100 sightings 6pt + over 5 years is 20/year. Many are multiple sightings of the same bucks in a deer population area where more then 1/2 of the 1.5 bucks are 6 pt or better. And I got to hunt a lot until last year. It may be BS where you hunt, but your window obviously does not and cannot show what the whole state is like. Just as I cannot begin to assume that because I see a lot of young bucks then you must as well. Big and varied state. I respect you for walking the talk by not choosing to shoot immature deer based on their point count. Actually sounds like we share the same goals for killing a buck - just don't agree on the value or willingness to have mandatory points based AR. Good luck with the season. -
What are you doing to prep for the 2012 Hunting Season?
SteveB replied to burmjohn's topic in General Hunting
Getting back to shooting a few arrows with the recurve after 8 months - been fighting golfer's elbow. Actually not doing bad out to 20 yds or so. If I can't shoot enough to get back to my older limits, will just restrict the shot attempts to closer. -

Brown and down huh - great assumption, but wrong, not that it matters to you, your agenda, or your spread of misleading info. I have passed probably 100 6 pt or better bucks in just the last 5 years because they where young deer I felt where less the 4.5. I get to shoot some does so am happy. How many immature (less then 4.5) bucks have the pro AR people such as yourself killed in that same time simply because they had enough points? -

Except they are the targets at 2 and 3.5 - still young immature bucks. The only way for bucks to reach maturity is too not shoot them before that regardless of how many points they have. Shooting a 2.5 10 point just removes a great potential buck before maturity. -

No - because over 50% of the 1.5 are 6 pt or better here. It would have little to no effect. There is nothing to show it would increase the number of real mature - 4.5 or older - bucks. -

Fine as long as it doesnt come to CNY/Finger Lakes. -
No - the bill passed one chamber but got held in committee in the other.

Huge difference. With the compound you are holding like 12 lbs. Can you draw the recurve, hold for 5 seconds without creeping or collapsing and still make a good shot? Just like with a compound, you need to be able to control the shot. For most, the learning curve is greatly shortened by starting with far less then 60# and a 45#er will have no problem shooting slap thru a deer.

I actually heard higher then that, but not sure. High enough so even if made legal, I doubt you will see many.

I heard they are not cheap either.

nyslowhand - That is what I was trying to convey. Lack of a sign does not convey permission or invitation.

Posted from trespass? Actually in NYS, anything other then land showing no usage or improvements of any kind is considered posted and unauthorized access is trespassing - although a conviction on a 1st violation will be unlikely.

I missed where anyone said this.

You are right. Kids got no business learning right from wrong.

That was my 1st thought as well. Nice role model.

Still the only poster here I would never care to meet - the ego would make any room too crowded. I'm sure the European experience is hugely pertinent to allowing all bows in the archery season. -

I've had disagreements with several on here on different topics. Still pretty much would share a cup of coffee or hunt with any one of them. Finally met the exception to this.
