Now it's easier than ever to print out custom topo maps right from google earth or just look at your favorite hunting spots in new ways. http://equipped.outdoors.org/2012/12/how-to-add-usgs-topographic-maps-to.html How to Add USGS Topographic Maps to Google Earth Did you know that you can overlay every available USGS topo map on Google Earth for free? And that you can set it up in a matter of minutes? Here's how: 1) Install Google Earth if you haven't already. 2) Download the Google Earth topo map layer from the ArcGIS Services Directory (it's the NGS Topo US 2D (MapServer) file). 3) When prompted, save the file to your computer. 4) Find and double-click the file. It will open automatically in Google Earth. 5) At this point, you're essentially done and can begin zooming in and out on topo maps for the entire country. You need to take one more step, however, to ensure that this file remains available for future use. When you first open the file, you will see a "NGS_Topo_US_2D" icon under the "Temporary Places" folder in the left-hand "Places" column. To make this a permanent addition, move the icon to the "My Places" folder; just drag it over and drop it into "My Places." One great feature of this layer is that you can change its opacity. That is, you can fade it in and out so that you either see just the topo map, just the satellite image, or both simultaneously. To do so, simply slide the bar in the opacity adjustment (circled in red in the bottom picture below).

I personally did not experience the "harvest increase" in Suffolk but I did enjoy myself afield. http://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/wildlife_pdf/deerforecastr1.pdf deerforecastr1.pdf

Looks like a small hen of the woods if that stump behind it is oak then it's a "of the woods" variant.

Happy Birthday! Just think a few short years ago you were tickleable!

If they had a home here before we wiped them out we have a responsibility to re-establish their populations where possible.

I smell the sense of entitlement that stupid amounts of money gives a person.

On Long island it's only shotgun or air gun and the squirrel season starts two months later, but Westchester is also shotgun only. I get more service out of my .410 on L.I. and only use the 20 gauge for turkey. Since the air gun rule change that allows for hunting with a over 600fps air gun I use the air rifle much more very late in the rabbit and squirrel season on L.I. IF, you make time to learn the rules L.I. can be fun to hunt, and I can be out in the field in 30 mins or less!

Put the .22 away and get a .410 bore or 20 gauge.

20 gauge is my choice for field hunting of any kind, ammo limitation is a drag but it's light easy to swing and your shoulder will thank you.

It would be an issue if someones inheriting them, I didn't see any mention of a next of kin. -

I remember when I was 15 my dad came home with a Coleman white gas stove, a big one. When I saw it that Friday I said to my sister "A camping stove we must be going camping!" Up until then i had only been camping with the Scouts. The next morning me, my sister and my mom piled into the family car, a powder blue Nova, and drove to New Jersey and picked tomatoes all day. I still remember driving home with them crammed into every possible part of the car. That Sunday all my moms sisters came over and we must have canned 200 jars of tomatoes! Dad worked two jobs longshoreman and at a fruit and vegetable vendor, Mom cleaned the offices of the New York Insurance company, when we did venture into the wilds of any kind it was often to gather food, It was a connection to the old country. Even such a small exposure made me curious about the woods and shores.

As I have mentioned before I grew up in Red Hook Brooklyn. I use to take the Short Line bus to Upper Greenwood Lake with my backpack to hike AT. eventually I covered all the AT within public transportation range from Conn. to Pa. My love of the outdoors came about because of my Dad and his frequent mushroom gathering outings and the Boy Scouts Troop 265. Inner city kids often have no idea of what real wilderness is and therefore no respect or desire to care for it. Stewardship of the land begins with knowing the land and all its many wonders.

I'd like to get up there as soon as i can to walk the forest some more and make additional GPS markers. I want to explore the swamp to the north, there doesn't seem to be a trail from the southern most parking lot to the norther one. My last foray into the swampy area flushed a good number of grouse. FYI the forest protects the Hudson town water supply. I'll take a hike there with anyone who cares to explore it with me if we can get together on the day.
