Deer Attractants, Toeing the Line or Crossing the Line
nyslowhand replied to wztirem's topic in General Hunting
When this was discussed in New Regulation You Should Be Aware of, a member got input from A DEC officer. Loosely quoted; He looks at what you are doing, your intent and your attitude when questioned, then he makes a judgemnent call. -
Seeing a common thread here: Food, drink and toilet paper. Except SteveMcD, apparently a die-hard leaf user. Know what poison ivy looks like?

What time will you be in your stand and are you sitting the whole day?
nyslowhand replied to burmjohn's topic in Deer Hunting
Early season for me revolves around traffic to & from the apple orchards. Early, about 45 min before sunrise 'til ~10AM, Again from ~3 'til sunset. During the October full moon, may get in stand earlier in the AM and skip the afternoon hunts. From about Halloween on it's all day in the stand. Of course this is all subject to change at a moments notice. -
Are you waiting on a specific buck and or size during opening week?
nyslowhand replied to burmjohn's topic in Bow Hunting
When the time comes, the moment is right and I feel good about the shot - thwack! Usually let the does go until last weekend of bow or gun season. They are the best natural attractant or buck lure available!! : -
If mobility is your concern, don't read any further! Hang-on & steps, you're well over $100. Just bought a ladder stand from Dick's for $128 total. F&S All Season Deluxe. I'm a little more secure and at ease climbing up a ladder stand.

I was one of those that had the B&W misconception about being color blind. Now I know. Thanx!

One neighbor I'm close friends with, I hunt near our shared property line. He watches my property when I'm not there & I help him haul firewood. Told me many times I could hunt his property, so I do. Other neighbors are not so friendly, so all my other stands are ~100yds off PL. Just for the reasons that were mentioned. One neighbor has ~1 acre lawn with one tree on the PL which last year he put up a wooden treestand in it. As soon as I saw it, I put up a posted sign on the PL in front of the strand. Don't think he hunted there! If he asked for permission, I'd probably would have let him hunt. Apple farmer I share a PL has stands real close to backside of my property. Early December I found a dead buck along the side of my ATV trail, about 20 yds off PL. Could see the tracks & blood trail in the snow from his orchard with no footprints following it. That annoyed me that he wouldn't have contacted me to retrieve it. Basically I'd be a jerk if I posted my property and then shot onto someone else's w/o permission.

Went out for a walk this morning to change the SD cards in trail cams. Chilly morning, cool day, saw a couple of rubs, two does with fawns, some leaves on the ground, shot my bow... I'm ready - turn me loose!! Come on Oct 16th, hurry up and get here!!!!!

A hunting Snuggie? ;D

When I used a hang-on stand, had steps that were similiar -Rapid Rails. They were okay once they got the slack out of the attachment strap. If I had it to do again, I'd use the sectioned ladder style. More or less to make me more comfortable climbing up them.

I have one I'm going to hunt with this year, if & when I already have one in the freezer. It's a 45 cal caplock with a 11" barrel and I'm planning on a shot of 40 yards or less. Anyone that can shoot a BP pistol with open sights farther, more power to them!! They do have limitations! Lot of different styles, brands, calibers and prices out there, even have them in DIY kits. They're fun to shoot. Want to have a real challenging hunting experience, try a flintlock pistol! Becareful if you are thinking about a BP revolver, pretty sure you can't use those during the ML season. Oh yeah, you'll need a pistol permit when you have the powder & ammo with the pistol.

I don't know, doesn't look like blaze orange to me.... Could be a terrible accident and Ken may shoot her. Accidentally...!..? :-X

Deer Attractants, Toeing the Line or Crossing the Line
nyslowhand replied to wztirem's topic in General Hunting
Going to sit this one out this time around. Only question is, Scented soils - is this the scrape additives or activators? -
Looks very substantial! Getting it up so late, wouldn't bother painting it this year. See what it lookls like next year, probably won't even need it.

OMG, you married an anti-hunter!!! Must be a special woman!! Assuming the topic of hunting isn't brought up too often!?!

Several years ago it was 18 yards, believe from a DEC survey of some sorts. May have changed since.

I've had good luck with mine at 38-40" off the ground.
