  1. This should serve as the annual "wake-up" call for treestand safety on this forum. Aside from the obvious need for safe life-line & harness use, climbing tree stands have their own distinct set of issues. If you use one, please visit youtube and view some of the videos about how to recovery from a climber &/or hang-on incident. If you're not prepared (mentally) for any of these unforeseen accidents, they could be fatal!!!!
  2. Isn't that almost always the case..? lol Apples in February,a buck still carrying bone, no snow on the ground.... freakish event.. Guessing your time stamp is also incorrect, dark at ~9AM. Just kidding!
  3. A little competition for the TV show, Treehouse Masters..? Cool!
  4. Not to try and change your opinion, but here's some food for thought. Assuming you've never hunted rabbits with beagles?? The dogs don't go far in the wrong direction before they realize the scent is stronger the other way. And..they almost never chase the bunnies by sight. Probably comparing apples to oranges, but would think dogs & deer share this same strength of scent detection..!?!
  5. .....which gives the impression of a direction of travel. I was told by a local scent farmer, every 40yrds or so. Of course, the bucks have to be in the general vicinity or traveling near it for a drag line to work. Which, btw has never worked for me! Not to beat a dead horse, but in the right place at the right time, maybe it'll work.
  6. Wish I had the money in hand I've spent on attractant scents over the years, from buck bomb, doe estrus (OTC & farm fresh), drag lines, Tinks 69, Code Blue, blah, blah. If you take all the above posts and condense them it'll tell you what I've learnt over the years - they'll work in the right place at the right time, but nothing works all the time, everywhere! Short of having a real doe tied to a tree in front of your stand. lol
  7. Jim's Pro Shop is on Rte96 between Manchester (Rte21) and the Fingerlakes Race Track (Cty Rte 8, Canandaigua Rd out of Macedon). Owner is the real expert, but has a day (paying) job. His son works afternoons and isn't the real expert. Meaning..if you venture down there, go after ~5PM or on weekends. Haven't been down there in a couple years, but at that time the owner was talking retirement, so things may have changed with who works when! Want better directions, PM me!
  8. Only the easy ones, nothing too complicated! Simple tricks for feeble minds! LOL
  9. Yes, they are the most dependable! Takes a lot of doubt out of the equation! Used fixed blade BHs with my compound bows for decades. Always thought about trying mechanical BHs, so when I got Xbow - thought WTH!!
  10. Answer is, it depends....on your preference, size of the area you hunt, how many deer (does) are in that area, blah, blah. There are several does where I hunt, so one will not be missed from the breeding stock. I prefer to take one in October, strictly because it's warmer and I'm not freezing my hands field dressing it. I then take it to a processor, but if you DIY - hanging one in the October temps can be an issue. Every deer hunter has stories of seeing other deer approach a kill or coming back to retrieve one and there are others around. I'm not a big fan of shooting multiples, stacking em' up and retrieving them later. When I shoot one, I give it the respect it deserves and immediately take care of it! This all depends on the logistics of where you hunt. Again, just my personal preference...does are for the freezer and bucks get donated to the food bank.
  11. PayPal is pretty much the prefered method of payment for most eBay sellers and a lot of other web based transactions. It started out as eBay's financial, sister company, but a couple years ago it had broken out from eBay's shadow. You can even transfer money to individuals with only their email address or use your checking account as payment. But..it does come with some risks. Your personal and financial info is stored on their website. Although PayPal site is fairly secure, you may be sent bogus emails from hackers posing as PayPal. Depending on your comfort level about identity theft, PayPal is probably the way to go. Does take a couple of days to set-up. Last I knew you became a member, set-up your account, listed method of payment(s) with account #s, PayPal then transferred a penny to your account and you verified this X'fer thru an email & login to your account.
  12. Modern compound bows vs compound type crossbows 101. The baseline is that modern compound bows and compound crossbows achieve somewhat similar speed and impact energy, fps & Ke. Relatively speaking!! Mainly speaking about the modern, most popular compound type of Xbow. The recurve and reverse draw Xbows have different performance characteristics due to their designs. Modern compound bows are somewhere in the 75% efficiency range. Mainly due to their longer limbs and power stroke (draw length). Compound Xbows are somewhere in ~1/3 that efficiency range, As you'd imagine due to super short limb design and meager 12-14" powerstroke. Lots of physics and calculus involved, which I won't pretend I remember. In Physics for Dummies...look at the input, differences in draw weight compared to the output or work performed (fps/Ke). As impressive as a ~200# draw weight is, about 2/3 of that is dissipated back onto the mechanisms of the Xbow and the bolt upon release through vibrations. Meaning...not all mechanical BHs will withstand this shock w/o prematurely deploying. Do your due diligence in researching mechanical BHs used for Xbows and from sources (forums &/or mfgers) that have much more experience than we have here in NYS.
  13. I use a Winn and the only complaint I have is it is pretty cumbersome to do anything with that hand while wearing the release. Some slight mechanical advantage to using a glove-type release. Isn't your's adjustable on the trigger pull force? Definitely different feeling that most other types of releases. Requires some getting use to practice!!
  14. Haven't we all gotten text messages from friends or hunting buddies; It's on, their running around like crazy. You look around the vacuum where you're hunting & think this dude is crazy!
  15. At bottom of a REPLY, go to MORE REPLY OPTIONS at bottom right. ATTACH FILES will appear at bottom of new screen. On your PC, simply find the locations, the photos and choose them. Not sure how this is accomplished when logged-in on a phone. Must be a very similar process though.

  17. I have 4 of these (new) available in northern Wayne Co. Typical ones that come with a ladder stand. Great for stashing under a stand as a back-up or spare. Only the usual USPS shipping cost.
  18. Would have checked all the boxes if I could have!! Depending on....when in my life I've hunted (deer), the time of year, whether I'm sitting in a stand opening day or after numerous hunts w/o seeing any BBs I've caught on cam during the summer. In my early hunting days, all day hunts were pretty typical. Anymore, 3hrs is about the length of my attention span! After my annual withdrawal period (Jan -> March), I'm super enthused to begin prep'ing for the fall hunts. By August, it becomes more of a task or chore moving stands, mowing, etc. Early season I'm super psyched and will sit thru most anything. Further into the season, I'd rather sit at home & look out the window at the high winds, rain, snow, cold temps, etc. So what am I? It depends on when, where, how or who you ask...
  19. G5 Montec are great all around fixed broadheads, vertical bow or Xbow! Very durable, easily resharpened and there's no doubt about what happens when you hit your targeted game! If you're thinking about a mechanical BH, I used the one suggest & sold by my Xbow mfger, since it was my 1st experience with mechanicals - NAP SpitFire. Had no pre-mature deployments while target shooting or while in the woods. No offence folks, but if you're looking for time tested reviews about anything regarding Xbows, this forum is not the place. Couple of really great Xbow forums out there that have US wide membership and decades of Xbow hunting experience. Yeah, I'm guilty of offering advice with little experience to back it up!
  20. Isn't there something on the books about spotted fawns....BOGO? Kidding!
  21. To remove any useless laws, either current or future, lets' cut the head off the snake, literally! Obviously I don't have all the answers or the how-to....!! Guess if you're going to have a wish-list, wish big! LOL Make the DEC commissioner an elected position responsible only to the public. Not an appointment as it currently is, sponsored by the governor and approved my the legislature. Which puts their allegiance into question!?! All new or modified hunting, fishing &/or trapping laws should be voted on by the current license holders. The legislature has a proven record of having no clue on these subject matters and are hugely influenced by lobby groups (and their donations..?). The DEC's budget should not be subject to monetary diversions back into the General Fund. Yeah, one of my pet peeves - General Fund! Even us idiots know we can't take money from house or car budgeted funds to buy more groceries or beer! Duh..! Remove Czar Andy's money making scheme of tourism from having any influence on NY's hunting & fishing policies or laws. Maybe I'm being selfish, but I feel NYS resources are available & being managed for its' tax paying residents. Finally, here's where it gets real murky..The DEC desperately needs an overhaul. Possibly a division of responsibilities into two separate & distinct departments - Environment and Fish & Game.
  22. Question for you UTV owners... At least to me, Initially the box/bed looks handy, but can imagine it being cumbersome to use for bulk items like firewood, dirt, gravel or even getting a deer up & into. Are they as convenient &/or useful as they appear? Maybe I'm just too old-school owning a std ATV with a decent (Otter), dump bed trailer, which I've hauled everything from 1/3fc of wood to 1000# of gravel to fully assembled ladder stands. Sure there are other situations where a UTV would be preferable as a work horse..!?!
  23. Is this what you're talking about? One of those situations where slow & safe is a better option than fast & convenient. Stay tuned, this is the time of year when there typically is a warning posted by other members regarding treestand safety and some of the horror stories about accidental falls.
