Are you obligated to take all 5 days of vacation during a Mon-Fri work week? Take two days one week & 3 the other..! If you're basing your time off per Alsheimer's predictions, believe the last time his "Rutting Moon" fell later in November we actually had a normal to early rut. Of course, the weather has a definite influence on their activity.

Look at the time on your over exposed photos. Lot of different brands of IR trail cams have this issue. Believe it has to do with the IR sensor and images taken just after dawn or befrore sunset. Basically flashes when it doesn't need to during those low-angle sunlight peroids.

What's your best remedy for poison ivy?
nyslowhand replied to First-light's topic in General Chit Chat
The good stuff Brush & Poison Ivy killer is expensive, but works pretty well, temporarily. Stuff will come back! -
If you're going to switch to fixed blade broadheads, G5 Montec is one of the better choices for all the reasons stated above. I try to keep things simple for the "moment of truth", so I've always relied on fixed blade broadheads. There's a lot of mechanical broadheads out there and they all have mixed reviews. So I'm sure the G5/T3 falls into that same situation. When you release that arrow, you want to have the confidence your setup will "get er done"!

What's your best remedy for poison ivy?
nyslowhand replied to First-light's topic in General Chit Chat
My property is literally infested with it! Have seen numerous 4-5" diameter vines going 30'+ up the trees. It has become a "fact of life" that I'm going to be in it every trip to my property. For mild cases, there are a lot of OTC aides that will help soothe the itching & promote healing. Everything from the $15/tube Technu to pink Calamine. For whatever reason the clear Calamine doesn't work as well the pink. If you get severe or numerous areas exposed, get a prescription for the Prednisone from your Doc. They might even call-in a prescription w/o an office visit. Damned near impossible to never get exposed, but there is a definite thought process in minimizing 2nd hand exposure which is where most people come in contact with the oils. I get it most often on my wrist from putting on/taking off work gloves. The oil is invisible, so you have to think about what has been exposed or may have the oil on it. Simple things like taking clothing (pants), shoes or boots off may transfer the oils onto your hands. Equipment, like mower blades. chainsaw chains, rakes, axes, pruning shears,....on & on!! Everything you may have touched with work gloves that may have X'fered the oils onto it. Tractor, ATV, mower, chainsaw ...! Guy that sharpens my chainsaw chains now insists I wash them off with gas before giving them to him! Sorry dude!! Believe you have a couple of hours before oils actually get into your pores that you can wash it off. I use Dawn with cold water. Warm water opens the pores and forces oil into your skin. Have washed with gas on a rag if I'm away from a water supply. Yeah, it stings & stinks, but it's only temporary, unlike the rash. Wash my clothing with a good quality (Tide, Era, etc) laundry detergent that will remove the oils. Typically do a double rinse cycle to get oils out of mashing machine. May even let them soak during the wash cycle. Dry on low. Never had a problem with getting re-exposed from washer, clothing, etc. -
No màs..!!!!

Oh, I completely understand. I'm ~1/2 way between or maybe erring towards faster in chosing my arrows. Also shot a 31" arrow, so that comes with some built-in Ke. I'm a piss-poor judge of distance, so flatter traj helps me.

So this is our fps vs Ke annual discussion? There is not a "one size fits all" when choosing an arrow's size, weight or material. WNYBH - Can't I also conversly say more Ke is a little "over-kill" for a whitetail? So don't fall into the male ego trap of thinking bigger is always better. Accuracy, isn't that in the hand's of the shooter? Like a lot of others have eluded to, shot placement is paramount, regardless of what size/wgt of the arrow. SO - Whatever arrow you're comfortable with and consistent in shooting, won't you end up making a better shot in the moment of truth? Yes - No? IF - You do make a good shot (placement) and the arrow only goes in 1/2 way, but has the blender effect as the deer trots off. How is that any worse or better than "pile driving" an arrow to eventually having a pass-thru??? It is basically a cut-on-contact style of hunting, so if your arrow punctures both lungs, who cares if it is still in the deer or in the ground behind it..? Think most will admit there are positives and negatives for both sides of the arguement of faster vs heavier. Doesn't it basically come down to personal preference..?

And he just keeps getting bigger. Like I mentioned there is nothing around to promote a rack like that!! The 1st two are typical, decent bucks for my area, he's just extraordinary. http://s1142.photobucket.com/user/nyslowhand/library/#/user/nyslowhand/library/Shared?sort=4&page=1&_suid=1374332503636022595097146553888

There is relief within sight! Check out accuweather.com extended forecast (prediction?) for your area.

Thanx! You know you're old when you're the same vintage as the Roswell UFO incident. Incase you're wondering, to the best of my knowledge I've never been to New Mexico.

More power to those of you with younger eyes, 10/10 vision, take only heart shots &/or have the confidence to shoot to 40yds+. Last year I removed pins from my Black Gold sight and began using only two. Main pin is good from 10 -> 25yds, +/-2" at the min/max within that pin's range. Just shoot a little low or high if deer is closer or further. Second pin is for 27 -> 35yds, also +/-2". Any compound bow less than 4-5 years old should shoot the same or better than mine. It's great to be able to watch a deer come into range for several minutes, running the shot through your mind, looking at possible shot opportunities and your pre-ranged yardage reference points. Too many times I've had just seconds to react and when you're in "auto" mode at full draw looking at 4-5 pins or need to adjust a sight..... This works for my style of hunting in the thicker woods or edges of thickets. May not be useful for hunting along the edges of fields, etc. Also a big fan of the KISS principle.

Can be either factory (mfger) trade show demos or in-store displays. Most come with full factory warranties. May have some handling scars, but mostly in new condition. FYI - They are typically models from previous 1-2 years. Link shows 2010 Bushnell Trophy cam. That year's trail cam from Bushnell had some issues. Is a great price, if you're willing to take a chance.....

Free Treestand Safety Harnesses
nyslowhand replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in Hunting Items For Sale and Trade
Have atleast two (3X..?) new ones that came with ladder stands. Unopened packages. North, central Wayne County. Local pickup or you pay shipping. -
Neat! Buck in night time photo looks like a brute!

One fix, more a "work-around" for the dawn/dusk issue is to set the LED Control to less/low setting. I'm going to try that, but assuming it will give you underexposed true nighttime photos/vids. Gotta believe it's within the cam's ambient lighting detection circuitry. Will share any helpful info when I receive it. From owner's manual: LED Control (Multi-Flash feature) Low, Medium, High Controls how many LED lamps fire when images are taken in low light. “High”=all 32 LEDs fire, which is the default setting. Set to Medium or Low if you are getting overexposed flash photos or will place the camera at very close range to the subject you want to photograph. In general, select High if most of your intended subjects will be over 30 ft. from the camera, Medium for the 15 to 30 ft.range, and Low for subjects under 15 ft. away. Note: in video mode, 24 LEDs fire in both High & Medium (default) settings. Set to Low if videos are overexposed.

The brightness is an issue I'm working on and have contacted Bushnell. Only happens at sunrise(+60min) and sunset (-60min), when sunlight is filtering through the woods at the low angle. Assuming IR sensor thinks it needs to flash. Can control # of LEDs flashing, but will definately not be benificial for true nighttime photos/vids. Cam is pointed NW with morning sun coming in from behind the cam. The location is at a creek crossing previous owner had logging equipment forge there. I cleaned it up some and use if for ATV Xing. You know how those manmade paths work, make a path and deer basically being lazy will eventually use it. Deerpassion - I was afraid not everyone could view these. If you're hanging on to Windows Vista, you don't have the video driver to view these. As I found out. They are taken in a DivX file format. There are freeware drivers available to view. Each file is too big for me to upload from my PC. Sorry! I wish I was artistic enough to do those turkey box calls. Guy in Flordia (Tim Swift) sells them on eBay. Even more gorgeous in your hand.

Rangefinder suggestions
nyslowhand replied to Jrs5144's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
I also have a Bushnell (Archer's Choice). Probably same as phade's, except my model is only up to 100yds. For 95% of your hunting, you won't need the angular comp feature. Unless you're shooting up/down a mountain side or 30' up a tree shooting at game within 10yds of the tree. Do the trig, you'll see. -
Looks like a runway preview of what's around! Of course we all know what happens after Labor Day and when we're sitting in the stand! There's a 5sec recovery between vids, so movement you see at end of 1st vid is same buck standing at top of creek crossing at beginning of 2nd vid. http://s1142.photobucket.com/user/nyslowhand/library/#/user/nyslowhand/library/?sort=9&page=1&_suid=1372875303245014796615749081687

Good year for apples?
nyslowhand replied to NYBuckHunter27's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Last year in Wayne County there were two late frosts that effected the local apple crops. Mott's plant near me had to RR supplemental apples in from Washington/Idaho to make up for what were limited supplies locally. Much more typical year (2013) so far for the apple farmers. -
That would be today! And counting!!
-
Just to set the record straight, he's already an exceptional velvet buck for my little part of the world. Property is DEC wetlands, clay soil, no arg crops within 2-3 miles, no food plots..! Must be this year's bumper crop of posion ivy..? Trust me, he already has my heart skipping a beat when I look at the photos. Just my type, funky rack, non-symetrical - love those!
-
....and within the "Trail Camera Pictures" category. About that time of year for the annual "mature vs young buck, AR, shooting what's legal, my opinion should be yours" discussion, eh?
-
Bought a Cuddeback a few years ago, worst mistke I've made. Never again! Old HCO ScoutGuard was a better cam at the time. Live & learn! Bushnell had some serious problems with their trail cams in 2010. Trail cam sites gave them bad reviews justly. Have a 2011 model and it is only okay! 2012 & 2013 models are excellent. Could p/u one of the brown 2013 models (#119537) for ~$140+ on ebay in March/April. Could be other sources at that $$ by now, but I've quite looking. From the photos I've seen on the sub-$100 cams, you get what you pay for. Reconyx is at the other end of rediculiousne$$. Just what my experience has been, not promoting BTCs.

Couldn't have intentionally staged better photos. Great lighting and buck posing like he wanted his photo taken.
