  1. Absolutely fascinating! I found it intriguing that this was a recreation of the original individual's experience and was able to be relived a 2nd time with an actor and film crews.
  2. `Caveat emptor` Lots of greay buys, excellent sellers and the ever present shady bunch on ebay. Unfortunately lots of sellers think they're Pawn Stars, American Pickers, etc. Most have no clue what they are selling. So, buyer beware when thinking about hitting the BUY button. You may be able to negotiate a return, but you'll probably be stuck with the 2X s/h.
  3. The rule of thumb to avoid this happening is - If you don't know what the message is about or it looks even remotely suspicious, DELETE it without opening the email. Go online and log in to your account on the site referenced. There should be a message or notification that there might be a problem if it is legit. I got one regarding my Yahoo user's group account similiar to what you described Deleted it! More dangerous are the emails that reference the same password change or account notifications for those of you with PayPal. This hacking can get your bank account info!!!! Email had semi-official looking PayPal letterhead and logo. Haven't seen this lately, but was pretty prevelant a few years ago. Bewarned, this is a financial idenity theft disaster just waiting to happen! Here's another senerio that happened to me a couple of weeks ago. Wasn't getting any emails for a couple of days, which was unusual. What happened was my IP provider (T-W Roadrunner) email was hacked and all my emails were being forwarded to another account unknown to me. Needless to say there was a heated discussion with T-W customer rep and a lot of finger pointing regading whose problem it was. In the end, I hadn't logged in to their site's email in several years so I couldn't have changed that forwarding option myself.
  4. I have Carhartt camo bibs I wear during bow and turkey seasons. Also have camo insulated and camo BO bibs I use during the colder bow or later regular deer seasons. Bibs allow you to wear more or less layers underneath, prevent the dreaded midriff cold drafts and are a little less constraining than belted pants. You can adjust the leg length via the shoulder straps. The Carhartts are a little more impervious to thorns, rose bushes, etc. They are by no means more waterproof, especially after being wash a few times. The main disadvantage of bibs is when nature calls.... The Carhartt camo bibs are 2X the cost of their regular bibs, but well worth the cost as hunting attire! Also have a pair of brown regular Carhartts I occasionaly use during bow season. FYI - If you go the bibs route, get them at least a couple sizes bigger than your regular pants size. You'll thank me later, as I learned the hard way.
  5. Since I live and hunt in the flat, glacial plain areas mentioned above, I have mixed feeling about legalizing rifles for big game. I'm a firm believer in letting everyone have the opportuntiy to hunt with their weapon of choice! This pending legislation gives me mixed feelings specifically due to the reasons outlined in the previous posting, since you can't regulate common-sense. I have several treestands within 100yds of my property line which have orchards on the adjoining farms. If rifle hunting is implemented in Wayne County, may have to re-think using them during the regular season, the size of the trees these stands are proped against and even the orientation of these stands relative to the orchards. Any of you hunters in these specific areas that hunt near agr fields might have the same concerns. Suppose the 2% rule that accounts for idiots is going to be ever present regardless of weapons being used. Putting rifles in the hands of some of the hardcore SZ shotgunners that already have questionable or less than ethical hunting practices in these flatland areas makes me skeptical, to say the least. In the end, the other 98% should be able to safely enjoy rifle hunting if implemented. As an individual, I'll just have to adapt or adjust my hunting locations, times, safety concerns, etc.
  6. Phenomenal!! This is what hunting is all about! Passing the torch. The smiles on your daughter's and son's face tells it all! Bet you're feeling pretty proud too! Hope this lucky skilled streak carries on thru the fall hunting with them!
  7. Here's the ultimate frustration buck! Have a 5 year history with him. First year he was a decent 8pt. In my neck of the woods that means about 3 year old buck. One friday afternoon I took vacation from work and bow hunted about the 1st week of November. About 120yds to my left I watched him chasing a doe and a smaller buck away for 1 1/2 hours until they disappeared behind me. Sat back down processing what I had just seen, when I hear a crashing behind me. Doesn't he charge under my stand within 5yds and off directly in front of me. What the hell just happened. The 2nd year around Halloween I spotted a buck to my left coming in to my estreous can calls. Turned and waited for him to get closer. Suddenly I catch movement to my right. The mature buck was charging the call and stopped behind a tree about 35yds. Needless to say after a couple of minutes at full draw when he finally stepped out, I was shaking. Shot & missed! The third year I was in the same stand I had encountered him the first time. Early morning during bow season, I see a deer coming about 150yrds out. Probably coming from the nearby orchards and back to bedding area. It's him! He turns and starts heading towards me. Here we go!! Suddendly he stops ~60yds out, then turns and walks away from me. Fourth year I spotted him during regular gun season chasing a doe out about 120yds in the thick woods. The doe had gone diagonally in front of me and to my right. Assume he'd be tailing her in the same direction. SO - When he stopped about 120yds and looking for her, I took a shot thru the woods, off-hand with my muzzleloader. Getting to be a bad habit, missed! Last year, I'm pretty sure I never saw him. Did see a buck chasing a doe thru the thicket, but don't believe it was my nemesis. Do the math, this year (if he survived) he should be atleast 8 years old. Don't have a lot of expectations for the 2013 deer season of encountering him again. Talk about frustration; may get a trail cam photo in summer and maybe one Oct/Nov. Of course, almost always a nightime! Then there's the single encounter each year, if I'm lucky. There are no agr crops within a couple of miles of my property, other than the orchards. So, for a buck to get to this size (relatively speaking), it's unusual in my neck of the woods.
  8. Was in Dick's the other day and they had some (Winchester?) super turkey shells - ~$27 for a box of 5. WTH!!!
  9. Never near the woods, about once a month in parking lots when I stuff the keys into my pant's pocket. Everyone looking around for the idiot...you're looking for a car to crawl under.
  10. There is so much energy captured in a cocked Xbow, only way to prevent damage to Xbow is to shhot it.
  11. In the not too distant past, they were commonly referred to as bolts. If you ever get into a discussion with a Xbow fanatic, they'll correct you - arrows. Arrow selection (material, size. wgt, etc) is dependent on your Xbow specs. Do your due diligence and research them and what the mfger suggests generally is determined by their testing. Not always, marketing has a role. Selecting an arrow for strictly achieving the Xbow's advertised max speed might not be the ideal choice. I think more so with Xbows than vertical bows, you get what you pay for in arrows from the major mfgers. One of the major arrow mfgers makes a one-time use, disposable arrow for releasing Xbows. Pretty convenient, but over time I'll bet it gets costly. Your on the right track with keeping an old arrow w/field point handy. All you need (as suggested) is a old Xbow target handy. Suppose a bale of straw/hay would do in a pinch. Even an old conventional broadhead block target might be dense enough to capture the Xbow arrow with a field point. Not sure, try it...? I for one, can't justify buying a new, dedicated target for this meaningless task.
  12. One of those priceless moments you'll carry in your heart forever and beyond! So...Next logical step is Columbus Day weekend hunt?
  13. Very Kool!!! Way to go dad! Not to forget the daughter, congrats to her!
  14. The big grin on his face is what makes it all worth while!!
  15. Article in the newspaper (Wayne Times) said the Wayne County legislature approved a resolution on 4/16/13 to allow rifle hunting in the county. Has been passed on to NYS legislature for approval. Shouldn't get all the controversy Ontario County has gotten...? Would you..? I'm pretty well set with my in-line ML.
  16. Lot of concerts by groups (individuals) from this era on TV, especially PBS and Palladia (PALHD). Most can still rock, while other should have just stayed in retirement. The best are the ones that do it for their fans and the nostalgia. Unlike the Stones, who make you take out a 2nd mortgage just to see them in concert.
  17. Did Joe Walsh go into his "spasms" while singing? Shouldn't make fun of his style, might have a medical condition. Have seen him on TV, concerts like Woodstock, The Eagles and some solo stuff. Always the same "ordinary average guy". Now, Bob Seger, could listen to him for hours.
  18. You forget you're talking about the NYS legislature and it's not one of the Czar's pet projects. lol
  19. Been there, done that and still in the habit of a early riser also. Thank God for the DVR, otherwise I'd miss all the primetime TV.
  20. Can't be a good thing when you're on a 1st name basis with anyone in a "Big-Box" hunting store. lol

    Dogs/Deer

This becomes a DEC jurisdictional issue: Environmental Conservation Law. Chapter 43-B Of the Consolidated Laws. Article 11. Fish and Wildlife. Title 9. Hunting.§ 11-0923. Dogs 1. No owner or trainer of a dog shall: a. allow it to hunt deer, or to run at large on enclosed lands on which wildlife or domestic game is possessed under license issued pursuant to the Fish and Wildlife Law or in any state park, state park reservation, state-owned game farm or wildlife refuge or state-owned or leased wildlife management area; b. allow it to run at large in fields or woods inhabited by deer outside the limits of any city or village, except on lands actually farmed or cultivated by the owner or trainer of the dog or a tenant of such owner or trainer.

    Dogs/Deer

Actually almost every town in NY has an animal control law that puts legal responsibilities on the owners. ie; The dogs are not allowed to be a nuisance to others, must be leased, tethered or under the control of the owner and not harass wildlife. Any of these are reportable offences. In today's world if you shoot at another person's dog, regardless of what it's doing - You open yourself up to legal action.
  23. The Simmons are Bushnell low-end cams with the Simmons branding.
  24. Pretty sure that is something I wouldn't be thinking about "in the moment", more likely after the intruder was down. If it were me, I'd be emptying the 10 7 shot magazine up to & including "point blank" range. Haven't heard anyone offering a trade!
