  1. And you thought Poplar trees were a waste of space & resources......... http://rochester.ynn.com/content/577475/going-green---phytoremediation/
  2. WOW, have we hijacked this thread or what? We've opened the door to the dreaded "Political" venting.
  3. Like I mentioned I'm a former smoker for ~50 years. Do realize I've sealed my fate and no amount of smoke-free follow-up years will change that. I try to walk the middle ground on the smoking issue, having been on both sides. You're probably right Doc, as with most statistics they have been shown in the best light or interest of the presenter. Huge, huge anti-smoking faction with lots of medical organizations backing it and of course tons of money claimed from litigations. What will be their next crusade, ban drinking & alcohol??? Didn't work too well in the 1920s. Several Presidents &/or 1st Ladies have crusaded for fitness and better eating habits, but all eventually lost the public's interest. Why? Back when I started experimenting with tobacco, it was socially accepted. Today with all the smoke-free areas and the stigma painted of smoking it's become almost a hardcore, cult-ish movement. Sneaking to the parking lot, back alley, behind the workplace or out to the garage - maybe that's the allure..? No amount of graphic evidence or TV propoganda will stop their habit. What forced me to stop smoking was the pure financial aspect of the habit, $10/day.
  4. Congrats to the son!! Sounds like you may be more excited about it then the son is..... Great bonding experience for a father & son!
  5. Think I misspoke..... Medical expenses for NY'ers are paid by insurannce companies and patients to medical facilities, drug companies & care-givers. Assuming a small portion might be in the form of medicare/medicad if that's what you're referring to..? In general, nothing into or out of the NYS budget. Yes, these medical expenses for individuals will cease, hopefully eventually. But indeed NYS might lose the $2B tax revenues on tobacco products. Good for a healthy NY, but bad for NYS & the tax payers. Someone will have to make up this deficit in lost revenues. God knows what they'll tax then to sustain the size of the current NYS govenment.... Sorry, that's another topic!! BTW - I've seen those disgusting anti-smoking campaign ads picturing the cancerous lungs since the 1960s. Haven't seemed to have made much of an impression or reduced smoking like the exorbitant taxes on tobacco have accompolished.
  6. Yeah, deer had easier winter, bugs will be more abundant and turkeys might start breeding early..... My concern is that my lawn is starting to get green & mowing isn't too far in the future. Hate mowing, althought only 2nd to shoveling snow. LOL
  7. Somewhere in the range of $8B/year for NYS medical expenses for tobacco related issues. Last time I got medical insurance they asked if I was a tobacco user because the premiums were higher than for non-smokers. BTW - NYS collects ~$2B from tobacco taxes supposedly for motivating New Yorkers to achieve a healthier lifestyle, including these ads. Typical of NYS, a lot of these funds get swept into the general fund. New Yorkers are the highest state in the US for taxes on tobacco products. Tax on cigarettes is about $4.40/pack in NY and about $6.50 in NYC. So what is NYS going to do to replace the $2B in revenues when they achieve their goal of all NY'ers being smoke-free? Like others, I also finally quit smoking after decades of failed attempts. Those that belittle an individual's ability to quit smoking, refrain from eating in excess or abusing alcohol are unaware of those habits or behavioral disorders. In a perfect world - CHOICE would be an ideal motivator, but since everyone's mind works differently freedom of choice isn't always achievable. Unrelated fact; NYS alcohol related motor vehicle deaths are about the same/year as tobacco (cancer) related deaths.
  8. No problem, you're welcome!! Maybe someday someone will "Pay It Forward" for me or another member. Worth the trip to walk-in the front door and be 6', nose to nose with a huge 5x5(?) elk mount. Pretty impressive animal.
  9. New contact cell # for Lake Country - (585) 281-8905
  10. Let me go over there and see if anyone is alive or still DBA. Not a probem since I live in Williamson. Try to get a contact # is anyone is around.
  11. You have to be cautious when looking at NYDEC declared wetland areas. Yeah, the property taxes are lower for any portion that is wetlands. Some wetlands completely dry up in summer time, while others stay boggy year round. There are restrictions regarding wetlands; changing the terrain or water flow, building within 500(?)' feet of a wetland, etc. Oh yeah, and with any wetland property comes the mosquitoes and any of the nasties they carry. Check out the NYDEC website. You can get an e-map (sattelite) with wetlands outlined for any NY area. Don't recall if I got it from the US Army Corp of Eng or the NYDEC. My 60 acre portion of an abandoned farm is a mix of brush, woods & wetlands in adjoining Wayne Co was less than $1k/acre. Rule of thumb - it's all relative to where your looking, your budget, hunting sucess in that area, real estate market and condition of the property. Finally, being in the right place with a pocket full of $$ at the right time.....................
  12. FYI - These home-brew cams are encased inside of typical trail cam moisture-proof cases. Want a winter project? Lots of forums discuss this. Do a search. http://www.huntnbuddyproducts.com/videopage.html
  13. FYI - If you're looking for a middle ground for the 2 or 3 pellet dilemna; Triple 7 sells a Magnum pellet at ~65gr each. Not available everywhere, but BP has them. I use 2 in myT\C Triumph and they shoot well with 245/280 gr Barnes sabots.
  14. I too am looking at another trail cam purchsae. Since I already have a Cuddeback Capture, won't be buying another one. Decent cam, but for me the triggering zone is way too narrow. May get a left over 2011 Bushnell Trophy cam when the newer models are released. Been watching then on auction sites and they are currently going for ~$130 for the bottom line model. The best cam I have is a hybrid with a Sony digital camera inside. Would look for another, but the cost of these hybrids is a little too much $$.
  15. Yeah - "Wreck-fest"!!! Years ago I saw a race on TV that was interesting! A figure 8 track, pretty interesting when the cars got spread out a little. Sorta like a busy intersection with no stop sign or traffic light, except no one was hitting the brakes.
  16. NASCAR is a sport with loyal fans like hockey, soccer, golf or even hunting - you either love it or see no sense in it at all!! Myself, I prefer hunting, then NASCAR and not so much any of the others... But I do NOT feel I need to criticize those that like the sports I don't understand!! Can't believe I stayed up until 1AM watching that race..??? At the time it seemed like it was the Daytona 5K. Glad it's over, I personally hate the super speedways. Yes, pretty spectacular, but wierd crash & fire with #42 & the jet-drier truck. Were the drivers bored or what during that long red flag..?? Playing with smartphones, twittering, joking, messing with the interviewer, tearing off their windshield strips, walking around, .... Not a fan, but I'd have liked to see Dale Jr clear the #17 & #/16 cars at the checkered flag. Would have prefered my fav (#14) to have done better, but that's racin'. Been a Smoke fan since his start as an overly outspoken bad-boy. Can't tell you how exciting the 2011 season was, all the way to the checkered flag at Homestead.
  17. After a week long "wreck-fest" don't think there is any way to predict what'll happen. Some pretty dramatic crashes this past week. Glad no one was injured!! Did make me grin when I heard Danica on her radio swearing after being hit & wrecked by teammate Witt. Still trying to figure out what the Busch brothers were doing at the end of the Nationwide race.... Was Kurt trying to block Lagano or maybe he simply didn't see them coming. Sure took out all the contenders and fan favorites.
  18. Very nice!!! Lot of these customized knives (Buck, Puma, Schrade, etc) on eBay. Some use very exotic materials on the handles/slabs. They go for a min of ~$150. Next project try the filework on the back of the blade & down the back spring.
  19. Summit Viper, but it gets infrequent use any more... Usually make rope between sections no more than 3'. In the wet area I hunt, poplars are definately avoided!!!! They look great, nice and straight with almost no lower limbs-but being up 15/18' attached to one on a windy day.... Makes you wish for claws instead of fingernails!!! Prefer smooth barked maples over anything with a shaggy bark. Like to know I'm biting into the tree with the stand and not just the surface bark. AND, of course the tree strap with a harness ALL the way up & down!
  20. Use this on my ladder stands. Goes on easy, dries fast, odor gone in a couple of weeks & it holds up really good!
  21. Okay, tried zillow.com with your original required $30k & for land only (between 10-100acres). Got 14 hits within NY and 1/2 were 20 acres or less. Most were building lots. One had 40+ acres, but was a wetland. Deals?????
  22. As a kid I was expected to eat what was put on the table! My dad loved his beel liver - grainy, tough & nasty!!!! Yuk!! Chew what I could & spit the rest into a napkin and discard after the meal. Then I had fresh venison liver. Whole different level of liver taste! Wasn't bad at all. Maybe because it was fresh or possibly the stick of whole butter used to slowly fry it!!! Heart too was good cooked same way. Today those organs are fox/coyote food. Don't mess with them anymore. BTW - organs are very high in cholesterol if you're concerned about that!
  23. If you read below the article in the comments, it was a joking message sent to the seller by the buyer. The safe was actually empty. Good story, all the same!
  24. Some of our founding fathers had the right idea; Thomas Paine, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, etc. Isolationism or being concerned with the US more than other countries affairs. Getting more appropriate in today's world with situations in Iraq, Afganistan, Iran, Pakistan, Somolia, Mid-East countries in general and of course Asia.
  25. Don't believe they even reviewed Bushnell cams in 2011. Big feud going on there with the site & Bushnell over the problematic 2010 models. FYI - I bought a 2010 Cuddeback cam & it is only ok. Good pics, fast trigger, decent battery life - but very small triggering field. I'm looking for another cam & it won't be a Cuddeback. They were on sale over the holidays for $100, didn't even think about it.
