  1. Any of you old duffers (like me) out there that have to wear glasses with bi/tri-focal lenses and still are trying to shoot a bow? Get rid of your bow string peep sight and try a Hind Sight system. You really would be suprised how much it will improve your accurracy & especially consistency with your bow. Both parts of system are mounted on the bow frame, so wrist torque is almost eliminated. 3 thumbs up for this product! May be other similiar products, but I'm not aware of them. http://www.hindsightco.com/Default.htm
  2. Where I hunt, my shots are 100yds or less. Generally much less at 40-60yds. My T\C Triumph has a Leupold fixed 4X scope. I find it does every thing I need it to do. Like Bubba refered to, get one with a decent Obj Dia, 40mm is good.
  3. I just switched to a HindSight Extreme this year. Same basic sight, I simply added it to my existing Black Gold pin sight Removed the peep and it has worked wonders for my accuracy & consistency. Hell to get old, especially wearing tri-focals. Have other input if you're ready to buy/switch, PM me.
  4. To/From - Up/Down treestand, at least a B/O vest & hat. Sitting in stand, I may remove vest and swap hat for green camo, but have them up in the stand incase. Walking around stalking, full B/O suit & hat always.
  5. Yeah, I thought about it also now that I'm retired. Conflict of interest arises, hunting & deersearch activities ocurr at the same time. Maybe I'm selfish, but my own hunting won out...
  6. How did the mountain men ever survive with deer antler measurers, cloth patches and round balls poured over a campfire????? Just so no one gets offended, I'm kidding....
  7. I have a Garmin, but that Rino has some really neat features. If it's like any other Garmin it should perform well.
  8. Same problem with shaking for me, but at 64 I'll deal with it. I shoot ~57#, which I can hold for a minute or less. I too only shoot sets of ~15 arrows at a time, by then I'm shaking pretty good & accuracy stinks. Only draw back to not getting the better muscle tone is length of time you can hold at full draw. That too has a "work around"; concealment, stand location, deliberate movement, etc. All I need is a good opportunity at 30yds or less and a short full draw hold timeframe. When all the stars are aligned, I'm good to go!
  9. Some noggin on that beast (the BEAR!). What a beast! Good for your friend!
  10. I "pop" a 209 primer in my in-line before loading. May not be necessary, but a carry-over habit from my T\C Hawken days. May not help. Hasn't caused any problems with fouling, so I'll keep following the habit. Worst case is you have to put another cap or primer in. My bigger concern is wet powder (pellets) on rainy/humid days. Biggest fear is getting a great opportunity & all you hear is pop instead of all the smoke & thunder.
  11. Deer Search has been around for a while. Problem is; there aren't enough of them around & trackers can be picky about where, when they're called out and the search circumstances. Can only imagine their schedule during deer hunting season. Probably a call every evening a couple of hours after dark.
  12. I changed to a new sight system this past year, mostly due to problems with wearing tri-focal glasses. Focusing my corrected vision on three seperate objects all at different distances (peep, pin & target) was almost impossible Removed the string peep and installed a HindSight on the bow frame. Looking thru the rear HindSight X-hairs, simply align the pin you've sighted in. Also have a level on front pin sight, which as other have mentioned is pretty distracting trying to aim & level. This has worked out really well for my application & needs. If you use a kisser button, you then have 3 points (2 on bow frame) of alignment which miniminizes wrist torque. Sure has improved my accuracy & consistency.
  13. HUH, didn't hurt? Guess you are better off sticking to the round balls, you get the idea....
  14. Okay, I was wrong! Flog me! LOL Not sure where the DEC gets off promoting the idea that it's ok to tresspass on vaugely defined "unimproved" land. I'd be a littled PO'ed as a landowner (& real estate tax payer) if a tresspasser threw that stipulation back in my face. Pretty much boils down to the people aspect. What happened to common decency, common sense, courtesy and the respect for other's property & privacy? Asking permission might get you onto a property. Trespassing, well that's never a great way to get introduced to a landowner. The adage "Better to beg forgiveness than......" does not apply in this situation!!
  15. That is absolutely NOT true!!! Quote the law that backs-up your fact and prove me wrong! Someone owns it; unimproved or improved, individual or business, posted or not. You as a hunter would be tresspassing on that unimproved land. This is why more & more landowners are posting their property! State lands that allow hunting are the only lands open to all without question!
  16. Welcome to the Father Time club. Wait until you graduate into tri-focal glasses. 1st it's iron sights on the rifle or shotgun and then for me it was the peep sight on my bow string. Just have to learn how to play with the hand that you're dealt!!
  17. Me too, think it was the neat names & labels!!
  18. Mossy725, I agree with your opinions, ethics and reasoning 150%. But... Why an eMail? Like breaking up with a GF thru a text message. lol Have we lost the ability to communicate in person in this electronic age? Is he really that stubborn and unapproachable?
  19. But box wines are so convenient to store & reseal!! LOL YIKES!!! Love local wines, especially Seneca Lake wines. Glenora, Hazlitt's, etc...
  20. FYI - MasterLock Python cable locks can be purchased "keyed the same". Check eBay, I got a set of 4 that all use the same key.
  21. Takes a special person to raise & train a hawk and then return it to nature! Very interesting about the mortality rate of newborns, something I did not know, Bet you've got some mad rabbit hunters in your area with a hawk swooping in front of the dogs and stealing the rabbit.
  22. Don't see where the annual NYDEC deer harvest shows a trend over the past 20 or more years that would effect deer populations. That is not taking into account irregularities in their breeding habits, an increase in predators or substantial changes in "winter kill" numbers. Unless you are saying hunters are simply killing too many deer each year to sustain the population...? http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/42246.html
  23. Some ATVs can ride double, passenger & driver. Atleast they were available before the UTV craze. A decent ATV with a strong ball hitch and an optional, good trailer can do everything a UTV can with out the size limitations. Somewhat $$, but my Otter trailer can haul 1000+lbs of payload, has a tilt bed, torsional axel and has ATV wheels/tires. I've abused mine and I've never had a problem with it. Have hauled gravel, rocks, firewood (4' log & 17" chunks), deer, treestands, fence posts and about anything I've wanted. Of course a tractor with a 3pt hitch has a lot of benifits with the available attachments. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you get one with 4wd the cost goes up significantly...? To me, a tractor seems like "over-kill" for hauling things around. As far as mobility, it's all dependent on the type of tires & the unit's ground clearance. My ATV has a meager 9" of clearance with mud tires, but I've only had to winch myself out twice. Worst situations are getting hung-up on a log or crossing a stone fence or bottoming out on snow with unfrozen, wet ground underneath.
  24. My Garmin 60csx is a very accurate and versitile unit. You can download maps and way points you have selected onto your PC and work with them there. For what I use it for the topo maps were my choice for a map option. Topo maps, at least the Garmin variety, don't show contours in under water areas (lakes, etc). It gives altitude to the unit's location. Wouldn't help ice fishing as it would give elevation to where the unit is located. There are marine maps that are optional. My guess is they are mainly for open waters, lakes & the ocean. Sounds like you are looking for a "Fish Finder" or sonar unit for checking depths? Or are you trying to return to the same spot as you had good luck previously (GPS)? There could be one that does both, but I'm unaware of any. http://www.gandermountain.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?pdesc=MarCum_ShowDown_Ice_Troller_Hand_Held_Digital_FishFinder&i=437438&r=view&aID=504C7&cvsfa=2586&cvsfe=2&cvsfhu=343337343338&s_kwcid=goobase_goobase_filler&cID=GSHOP_437438
