  1. I had a malamute, not the giant variation. They are pack dogs and have genes from the wolf species. They are NOT indoors dogs! They ARE very active dogs needing exercise! They should NOT be allowed to run free & unattended outdoors!! They will terrorize the neighborhood cats and other domestic or wild animinals. With that being said, mine was a very beautiful dog, loyal & extremely friendly to all people small & tall. Loved kids, but generally scared the hell out of them by being so large & overly friendly. You'll need one of those special pronged or choker style collars if you plan on walking & retaining control over the dog. Even a regular bred malamute that tops out at 80-100lbs will take you for a run if you don't have control of them. Basically you need to know what you'll be getting into before adopting a malamute. Wish I had the right home/yard situation, I'd have another one in a minute!!!!!
  2. Been alot of sniper documentaries on the History channel, but I don't recall his name. Doesn't mean he wasn't mentioned. Have to look for the book! Takes a very unique person to want to train as a sniper. And to serve 4 tours in Iraq or Afganistan doing it is unbelievable. They get into a lot of life threatening situations & not to mention always have bounties on their heads. Can only imagine what they go through back in the US after all those war-time adreneline high situations.
  3. Thought my house was coming off the foundation and I was headed for OZ last evening. Lost power for about 1.5hr. Still breezy!
  4. Very neat socks on that deer!!!

    Bullets

I've shot a Renegade for years. Basically the unadorned cousin of the Hawkin. Shoot T/C Maxi-hunters with 90gr powder. Your rifle may require more or less charge. These conicals are 275gr. and no you don't need a 400gr projectile to kill a deer. Not a super accurate conical, but fairly predictable over its' effective range. A suitable upgrade if you don't want to mess with a patched round ball in hunting situations.
  6. Yesterday it was snowing & 10 degrees, so I became one with the remote. Anyways, between football & channel surfing there was an interesting show on the History channel. Sniper:Bullet Proof. Worth watching if you get a chance. Interesting senerios and unbelievable shots, but the following attachment was the most spectacular. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Il43qkm7WMs
  7. Lost interest in football years ago, thanks to the heart-breakers (Bills). Watched the last quarter of this game and that gets me interested again. Great game regardless of who you were rooting for!!!!
  8. I got one of those last year. Pretty tough, still marinading mine! LOL
  9. Grinding your own horseradish, brings back some bad memories like Culver Creek mentioned. Do yourself a favor and simply add more horseradish to the store bought sauce or mayo. I prefer just horseradish, but occassionaly buy the Kraft Sauce.

    knives

I also have my departed dad's WWII, Coast Guard issue knife very similiar to your's. Don't carry it, but it works great with a hammer to split the rib cage on a deer.
  11. Think you're getting the idea that you should play with it in the backyard first. Nothing worse than checking for photos and seeing none have been taken. erussell - got a couple of used Python locks I'd sell cheap. PM me if interested.
  12. Never once have I seen a deer browse on what we in NYS call Poplar trees/leaves. Of course, that's not to say they won't eat the leaves or feed on the saplings if other food supplies are limited. Do have small plots of Poplar saplings that bucks love to rub on. They have poor root systems. Don't tolerate wet conditions very well and high winds tend to blow them over. When I find a Poplar that has fallen, won't waste my time trying to harvest it for firewood. Oh yeah, I avoid setting-up a treestand against any Popular trees in the low lying areas on my property for obvious safety & health reasons. Do know that deer prefer Maple over Poplar for browse. Not so much the leaves, but the twigs & ends of branches.
  13. All 8F i buck, 1 doe - bow 1 doe regular season w/ML
  14. I'm happy with my Hind Sight, but your setup looks really interesting! Definately makes a difference eliminating any wrist torque with two sights on the bow frame. Still need your string peep thought, huh? If the OD of the sight housings align, is the peep necessary? Just wondering. That was what I wanted to eliminate due to my vision problems. If it works for you, great!! And a Robin Hood...... Looks like a more substantial mounting bracket than the Hind Sight.
  15. Yeah, so are we confused? My 1st post had a different response from DEC official; maybe Oct 1, 2012. Last response from another DEC official; definately Oct 1, 2012. Okay, so it's going to happen - sometime! I'm not making any definate plans for 2012, just yet!

    knives

Bought my 1st knife in 1970. Needed a folder to carry while rabbit & occassional deer hunting. I had no brand loyality, simply liked the looks of the Buck 110 folder. It has stood the test of time and I still carry & use that kinife. Few years ago I wanted a fixed blade, so I naturally looked at Buck knives. Lot of great knives out there, of which the Buck brand is only one. Unfortunately today most knives are made in China.
  17. Okay, I got a 2nd response to my initial eMail to the DEC. And they wonder why the general public is confused or misinformed............ Seems to contradict original response by another individual within same office. Who really knows??????? After a lengthy comment and review period, the Deer Plan was approved as final a couple months ago. The season changes, including the Oct. 1 bow start date will take effect next season, fall 2012. Art Kirsch Sr. Wildlife Biologist NYS DEC, Bureau of Wildlife 6274 E. Avon-Lima Rd. Avon, NY 14414 (585) 226-5461 Voice (585) 226-6323 Fax
  18. Response to an eMail I sent to Region 8 administration. And we all know how fast government works.................... "The Deer Management Plan has been finalized and approved. The Plan is just that, a plan for how to manage the deer resource of NYS for the next five years. DEC staff are now working to begin implementing parts of the plan. So, while the plan calls for moving the Southern Zone Archery season opening date to October 1, that cannot occur until the regulation is changed. Changing regulations take some time, as each proposed change must go through a public comment period. At this point the archery season regulation change has not yet been drafted, but it is possible that this regulation change could be completed in time for the 2012-13 season, and definitely could be done by the 2013-14 season. You can keep track of what regulations have been proposed and/or adopted by visiting this page: http://www.dec.ny.gov/regulations/propregulations.html Michael R. 19. May be available, but I think most are made by cam owners/users. Crude, but it works. http://huntingny.com/forums/topic/6159-trail-cam-rain-hood/ Another tip, is the viewing orientation of the cam. I try to have my cams facing north, that way the sun won't wash out the photos. This isn't always possible, but I prefer not to get early AM or Late PM sun shining into cam. Oh yeah, I'd suggest playing with it in the backyard first. Get an idea what all the buttons & options do. See how it triggers when you walk in front of it in all directions. Finally, trail cams are really popular & easy targets for thieves. Caution; You've now enter into an addictive hobby!!!!!!!!!!!
  20. Gettin Started on blue bar. http://www.chasingame.com/ Lots of different forums discussing them, maybe your model. FYI for a search - Game cam, trail cam, scouting cam, ......same thing!!
  21. Can someone please direct me to the official reference of a SZ bow season opening on OCT 1, 2012. Seen the DEC Proposed Plan suggesting that date, but that plan isn't approved yet. Is it? Did see mention of Westchester Co. opening then. Appears to be a lot of rumors & assumptions, but nothing official for 2012. Is there? Am I wrong?
  22. In the grand scheme of things, what does this mean????? Early rut, sheding early, unusually warm late fall - early spring???? OMG, thermal warming is effecting my deer hunting...............lol
  23. Ah ha, baiting. Just kidding!!!!!!!!!!!! Cam has a great flash!
  24. I have a ScoutGuard 550V, Cuddeback Capture and a 5yr old hybrid. SG has great triggering zone, semi-fast trigger speed, battery life is ok, but the photos leave a lot to be desired. The Cuddeback has good battery life, fairly decent photos, fast triggerspeed, but the triggering/detection zone is VERY small. The hybrid has a Sony Digital camera inside so the photos are terrific. Excellent detection zone & pretty good triggering speed. Fivve years ago I paid just over $200. To replace it with a similiar hybrid to day would cost more than 2X as much. Next game cam - 2011 Bushnell Trophy Cam.
  25. They are not laser aiming devices, if that is what you are thinking. A Red Dot is no more than a reticule instead of a crosshair. Of course. some Red Dot scopes have the X-hair option. I have one and it is sighted in like a rifle scope at ~90yds or whatever.
