From the landowner's viewpoint. May seem excessive or paranoid, but here is what I use. Like others have mentioned, who knows what can happen. Trips or falls, unknown dug wells, accidents in/on property owner's treestands, animal bites or attacks, aliens, whatevers, etc...... Also have it witnessed or notarized. Don't know about the legality. but it makes me feel more comfortable than a simple "Okay to hunt" form. Sure don't feel comfortable with DEC's legal stand on this topic. http://www.nrahq.org...r_agreement.pdf

Stupid question - What proof of residency is acceptable when purchasing a license? NYDEC web site says "...permanent residence blah, blah....ie: registered to vote..." NYS driver's license? UB college ID? Probably something I'd want to know before going into WalMart or a town clerk's office to get my license....... FYI: (NYDEC site) Sportsman Safety Education Requirements Mandatory Hunter Education: A hunter education course is required for persons who cannot show proof that they have ever possessed a hunting license. The general course is a minimum 10 hours in length. DEC honors hunter education certificates and sporting licenses from all other states and countries. Mandatory Bowhunter Education: Hunters wishing to bowhunt for deer and bear must take an additional 8 hour minimum bowhunter education course. DEC also honors bowhunter education certificates issued by: National Field Archery Association or National Bowhunter Education Foundation or International Bowhunter Education Program issued in 1974 or later in any state or country, Any state or provincial fish and wildlife agency (certificate or card must specify the course was for bowhunting and not a general hunting course with a bowhunting segment), Ontario Bowhunters Association (on green or brown letterhead stationery with moosehead-bow and arrow emblem until July 31, 1987), or Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (on letterhead after August 1, 1987). Find additional information about Sportsman Education or look for an education course offered near you. You can also find information by contacting a DEC Regional Office or by calling 1-888-HUNT-ED 2 (1-888-4868-332). Residency To qualify for a resident license, a person must live in New York State for more than thirty days immediately prior to date of application. Land ownership in New York does not make you a resident. Residency is that place where a person maintains a fixed, permanent and principal home (regardless wherever temporarily located), such as where a person is registered to vote. If under 18, the residence of parents or legal guardian shall be deemed such person's residence. Active members of the US Armed Forces stationed in NY and full-time college students in residence in the State during the school year (proof required) qualify for annual resident licenses.

It's the "Male Ego" phenomenon!!!! Sorry ladies, you know what I'm talking about. More bad reasons to over-power your draw weight than positive effects. Sure, you can probably shoot flatter out further with more KE. How long a shot do you want to make when the average harvest is around 20yds? How much excessive KE is wasted when a minimal amount is still lethal? Is a pass-thru that much more lethal than the broadhead lodged in the vitals doing the "blender" effect? If you can achieve the same results (dead deer) with smaller inputs, why is bigger & badder that much better?
-
$1250 and no cup holder....? Shoulda got a Deere. LOL
-
If looking at used bows be aware - some draw lengths are fully adjustable while other may take modules. All depends on specific bow &/or mfg. I.E.; Some older models that take modules may be difficult to find. First assignment - Search the web and be aware of "brace height". It can be a beginner's best friend!!! I'm assuming your thinking a compound bow for your 1st & not traditional (stick).......?
-
Go to an Archery Shop, preferably privately owned. More than one, if convenient! Act like your going to buy a complete set-up & they'll be more than helpful. You'll get a lot of basic info from that trip. Draw length, draw weight, accessories needed & some ideas on $$. DO NOT BUY DURING THIS 1ST TRIP!!!!!!!!!!!!! Start looking around at different bows, accessories, arrows, broadheads, etc. Tons of different options available as well as lots of used stuff for sale to get you started with a smaller investment. Search the web, don't limit your shopping or research only to the local retailers. Lots of reviews & info on the web form the best bows to what arrows or broadheads to choose. Try a bow before buying it!!!! Shouldn't be an impulse purchase. Guaranteed, you'll regret it! My 2¢ worth; Don't let your ego control what draw weight you choose. 55# will kill a deer as well as a 70# draw weight. It's about what you can comfortably hold at full draw for some length of time. A Kia will kill a deer as dead as a BMW. Those $1500 bows look great, but ...... To get started with the most bang for the buck, a good used fully accessorized bow is the way to enter bowhunting. FYI - Look at Wynn's string releases. Straps to wrist, you pull with your shoulder & only requires the trigger finger. But - buy what you find comfortable, shoots well and is within your budget. Lots of time to upgrade later on! Archery s not a cheap sport to get into. Buying a decent rifle or shotgun is a hell of a lot cheaper.

More than likely the same thing has happened to all of us............ Has for me anyways. Then I think; I'm such a dumb ass...duhh!!

Adopt (rescue) a dog from a local shelter. Considered that option?

Summit Tree Stands
nyslowhand replied to erussell's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
New line-up for ladder stands also. http://www.summitstands.com/non-climbing-treestands/crush-series- Appears as though they are trying to compete with the lower $, Chinese stands. Love all my Summit satnds. Single Shots are the best ladder stand! -
So that's what happened to Kodak...........

Ditto the Traxter 500 with CVT!!!! I've beat my to death & it keeps on running. You won't win any ATV races with it and probably not the best for high speed trail riding, just a great work horse!!! The John Deere Buck was exact same ATV. Don't know who makes them for JD these days. Maybe still Can-Am (Bombardier)...?

Basspro.com has a $5 s/h with no minimum purchase. Ends 4/15/12. http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CFPageC?storeId=10151&catalogId=10051&langId=-1&pageID=5089&cm_sp=5DollarShippingMar2012_EMAIL&om_rid=AK58Vc&om_mid=_BPbKwTB8hcxY7i Ahh - Quaker Boy, Dick Kirby from the Buffalo area. Right? Good old boys, him and Ray Eye out of Pa. Watched a lot of their VHS tapes and listened to cassettes when I was getting into turkey hunting.

Try holding your box call with the handle pointing away from you & shake it. Semi-decent gobble can be produced. That is with the box I have; long, slender with a rubber band near the handle.
-
Diaphram calls are "one size fits all" and may not fit the contours of your mouth. Gently and a little at a time; trim the overall size/shape & bend it until it fits the roof of your mouth. Best may to know what sounds to make is listen to live (wild) turkeys, but a CD/DVD about calling them is more convenient. Then - practice, practice, practice...... You won't have to win a calling contest to be able to fool a tom, (generally....).
-
Yes & No! As gross as it may sound I have favorites that I always seem to fall back on during the season. When you've trimmed, bent and fitted one that ends up sounding pretty good- it's a keeper! Kinda like that old favorite hat, coat, slippers, dog.... just feels right when you're there! I usually rinse mine in mouthwash a couple of times during the season and definately before putting them away. Over the years I've purchased many, most are all hype and crappy sounds. Have 4-5 I carry, but only a couple I always seem to use year after year. Like any other hunting tool, you're always searching for the ultimate "sure bet"!

Wagner Lumber opinions
nyslowhand replied to The Engineer's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
They can literally destroy your property if you don't protect yourself. When I do it again I'm going to be more concerned with getting a list of their last 10 customers than a few $100 more. -
You see these bills as benificial and I see them as putting a silk hat on a pig. Guess this is how opinions are formed. One thing I don't understand is your overall logic. You'd recruit, educate & promote youths into oudoor activities, i.e.; hunting, fishing, etc. Then you'd expose them to cold, snow & the "orange masses" for thier virgin hunt. Makes HO-HOs and Grand Theft Auto all the more inviting......
-
Okay, my bad - just had to look.. Great shots of a magnificient bird.
-
Here's the justification for these bills, A4933 anyways; "In addition to creating a healthier lifestyle and providing insight into the cultural significance of an area and its activities, providing education in the classroom will also lead to place hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation in a positive light." Basically a bill with all the window dressings promoting conservation & education, but for fighting obesity as its' main goal. Great idea, but for all the wrong reasons. Too bad the already over-extended DEC got dragged into this project. Maybe it would ignite a spark in the classroom, but they'd still need the mentor outside of the classroom. Think there exists any mentoring system for HS youths that are addicted to sugar or Xbox?

Anyone ever hunt Hadley Creek outfitters - pike county Il?
nyslowhand replied to Geno C's topic in Guides and Outfitters
No review for Hadley Creek, but there are alternatives... Looked into an out of state big buck archery hunt a couple of years ago. Did all the prelim leg work, but unfortunately had to cancel the hunt. For what I wanted, could afford and expected from the experience - Ohio had it. Western Kentucky has similiar opportunties. Can drive there, get a guide, rent a motel room, be responsible for own food/provisions and be put on big bucks for little $$. Lot of guides S/SE Ohio that lease properties and only put you on those parcels. You do the rest..... Guide I found was ~$700, of course plus my travel, license, food & accomodation expenses. What you get is a 3rd or 4th choice location, as the outfitter has the prime spots and is trying to recoup his lease fees If you're looking for the "whole experience" hunt, then maybe an outfitter would work for you. I just couldn't justify the $4/5K for a whitetail hunt. -
Ditto! History channel also! Sometimes the C&I has interesting shows.

Usually don't pay much attention until the final 4 or the championship game. Last weekend there was either a tournement game on TV or nothing else. Got hooked with the 2 underdogs posting upsets. Watched a few other games also. Thought it was a waste of time with the sweet 16, believed KU & UNC should just play for the title. Not so sure after the lack-luster UNC squeaker. Try to be a SU fan, but they rarely seem to be able to go the distance. Lota drama at SU this year.. Have to see if they survive the weekend.... Anyone have surviving bracket choices or favorites?
