Sure you did some web searches...! There are very few known Clovis sites, especially in NY; ie: Lamoka Lake. Not to burst your bubble, but those are more than likely Iroquois relics. But, any thing is possible.....! Very neat finds, all the same!!!!!! I have some Iroquois arrow points & trade beads from the Geneva & Bloomfield area settlements. Kool!!

Let us know how you like the Hindsight. I've got one to install on my Bowtech Swat I purchased a couple months ago for my BG sight. Going for the single pin sight and removing the peep from the string.

Arrows, what are some good ones? Anyone buy new ones recently?
nyslowhand replied to burmjohn's topic in Bow Hunting
Been a couple of good articles about arrow selection in Bowhunting and D&DH magazines. Depends on what you shoot, your bow setup, broadhead selection, fletchings & what you expect from an arrow. Like every thing else in life, every one has personal preferences that work for their situation. I shoot Beman MFX 340, blazer vanes & a 100gr fixed broadhead with a 58#/315fps bow. Search the web or eBay for best prices once you decide. Like to patronize my local archery shop, but their too expensive for arrows. -
Should start looking healthier in a couple of weeks. Can't say much for the antler development...

Followed it religiously for years, not so much lately. Too much propaganda. $$$ and media hype. Nascar has gone the same route as other major sports (MLB, NBA, NFL, ...). It's all about how much $$ can be taken from the fans and sponsors. Can't deal with Johnson, Gordon or Logano. Do cheer for Stewart, Edwards, Harvick, Keneseth and a few others. Few sentimental favorites I'd like to see win a race - Martin, Labonte(s), Burton, Elliot and of course Jr.

Latest news is the price of gas is expected to go down by $0.50. As others have said, "Won't we be happy to only pay $3.50 at the pump..." ??? Scary thing is what can we do???? Car pooling is a great idea, but not practicable for most. Hybrids are not operated free, cost more $$ upfront and I've read mixed opinions about their actual payback. The thing I want to know is where is the patent the person got in the 1970s for a 72MPG carbureted auto engine. Right after the 1st oil embargo it was in the news alot, then disappeared. Is it in a tent in the Saudi desert? In a safe at Exxon? Hangar 51?

There are a lot of home-made recipes on the web, do a search. Here's one I haven't tried yet, but I've heard mixed results about the effectiveness of Skin So Soft. U.S.Forest Service Bug Spray Recipe: 1 cup water 1 cup Avon Skin So Soft Bath Oil 2 cups vinegar 1 tbs. Eucalyptus oil (found in health food stores) Optional: few tablespoons of citronella oil. Shake spray bottle well before spraying on horse, human or dog!

Had a pair of Muck boots for 5-6 years and no signs of rotting/drying out. If you treat rubber boots, doesn't it kinda defeat the scent-free theory behind wearing them??? Maybe there is some scent-free treatment, don't know???

I've used them for the last 7 years. When I bought my bow with a loop notch, I got the same but different style release. Typically spray mine down pretty good just before bow season with scent eliminator. Being retired, 60-70# draw weights are beyond my capabilities. Can gain ~5-8# of draw weight by using this style of release, thus I shoot at almost 60#s. Only complaint I have about that style is it makes handling things difficult. Kinda lose the use of your shooting hand, at least grasping objects. Which probably is ok if your simply sitting in a tree. This year I bought a back-up release, same style/brand which I may use solely for hunting. You'd really be out of commision if your primary one failed and you didn't have a spare. They aren't sold at every bow shop or hunting store.

Good for you!!

Spent 5 hours Sunday calling to & playing with a tom or being played with. He wouldn't come out of the adjacent, posted property. Monday AM spent 3 hours of absolute silence & "nothingness" before I decided to quit. On way out of property was calling every 100yds when suddenly one gobbled at ~80yds. Scrambled to get off the ATV path, find a set-up, ditch my pack, get mask on & ready for the action. It was over in about 3 minutes, got a jake at ~50-60yds. Nothing to brag about, but with the lack of many other birds I feel lucky. An ~18# jake with full length tail feathers (fan), kinda unusual. Will continue hunting for another, but don't expect much luck.

Sounds like a great experience!! Excellent photos, as usual!! -
Food plots vs Hunting plots
nyslowhand replied to G-Man's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Food plots are legal! Personally prefer not to plant them where I'm going to put a stand & hunt. Have planted clovers & rye in lanes/openings far from my tree stands. But I do hunt 150yds from my neighbors apple orchard. Another neighbor plants ~2 acres of corn with a shooting tower 80yds off the plot. Kinda urkes me every time I see it!! Oh well!! So I guess I'm not opposed to them, just not for me. To each his own! -
Your favorite hot sauce...not neccessarily hot
nyslowhand replied to Single_shot's topic in Game Recipes / Cooking
Agree with Fasteddie on this one!!! ??? Do like Dinosaur garlic chipotle for the taste. -
Debates by hunters over when the whitetail rut is initiated has gone on for decades. Also discussed on this forum at least a couple of times last fall. IMHO - Photoperoidism & weather are the major contributing factors. Others swear the full moon following the fall equinox triggers the rut, Alshimer's Theroy. To each their own believe, just be there when it happens. What I found interesting in the article was that if implemented correctly QDM creates a shorter, but more intense rut. I realize it is supposed to produce a healthier deer herd and better buck to doe ratios. But how is a compressed rut better for the general hunting population that typically hunts weekends & holidays?

Yet again we've digressed into that deep, dark, forbidden place the moderators spoke of earlier. Be serious - a topic about working together, being civilized and expressing only opinions and we're into the "chest-beating" stage already. Come on fellow forum members - act your age, be courteous and remember lots of others are reading these topics also. There are rules of etiquette pertaining to forum usage, do a search.

If you're a hunter with a 1/2 a brain; You'll be familiar with your hunting areas, if not - you use a guide, topo map/compass or a GPS. If you choose to ignore common sense, then Darwin's theory of Natrual Selection will prevail.

Your favorite Outdoors / Action Movie ?
nyslowhand replied to fasteddie's topic in General Chit Chat
I own Jeremiah Johnson & Mountain Men (Heston) DVDs. Love that era, but classified as action movies? John McCabe (Willis) movies are okay, as are some of Gibson's. During the era, I was a huge Harry Callahan (Eastwood) fan. Stallone & Schwartznagger movies are entertaining, nothing great as they both suck as actors. The new Mr. NRA had a lot of action movies. Norris, Segal and most other martial arts experts make terrible actors. Jet Lei has some decent movies, nothing exceptional. Can appreciate Deniro & Pacino acting abilities, but not a huge fan of either. Heat was a pretty good movie! If you include war movies, Platoon is my all time favorite. We Were Soldiers and Private Ryan were also good war movies. The Patriot may not qualify as an action film, but was good all the same. -
Yeah, I also hear those shots taken in the pitch darkness of pre-dawn. Always hope no one was shot!!!! Those are usually shots taken at unidentified bounding white tails. I don't carry a watch with me hunting and there is no time clock at my treestand either. My scoped muzzleloader is my weapon of choice during gun season, so I get one well placed shot (hopefully). The sight pins on my bow need sufficient light to glow & see. Hunt in woodlots where it's dark or at least gray well within legal shooting times. Am in the stand well before 1st light and out when it's too dark to see. If it's light enough to absolutely distinguish what I'm shooting at, it'll be an ethically placed shot and I can positively be certain it's a safe shot - I'm shooting and not checking the time first. This will happen 99.9% of the time well within legal shooting times, if I were to check my phone for the time. At last light I'm generally out of the stand well before last shooting light. By then things are too gray & fuzzy to distinguish what your target is, with out any uncertainty! Over the years I've passed on a few of those pre-dawn situations because I was unsure of my target. If I were hunting open fields or during a full moon with clear skies, might pay more attention to the actual time. Have I shot at deer outside of legal hunting hours? In the past - Maybe twice could I question the time I had shot (full moon scenarios), but I'll bet it was within legal shooting time. I hate hearing those distant shots hunters take in the pre-dawn darkness. The ones that sound closer make me very nervous and fell very unsafe!!!!

I agree with with the idea that every hunter should be subjected to some sort of refresher recertification. Convinced the DEC will go about it the wrong way, but a good idea all the same. Not to high-jack your post, but should be the same for drivers licenses.

Old news, posted 10/01/2009 but ..... Agree with bph, a "win-win-win" proposal for bowhunters, traditional muzzleloaders & youth hunters. It's time NYS caught up to the rest of the nation regarding game laws & hunting opprotunites.

Best thing to do is take the manufacture's claims at their face value. Most tend to over-exaggerate their GPS unit's capabilities. Satellite reception and the unit's ability to do what you expect it to do are most important. Don't get caught up in all the bells & whistles; built in flash-lights, communication with similar units, alarm clocks, .... There are units that function as both auto and handheld routing GPSs. Big, color displays are great, but $$$$$. Seeing the big picture on their small screen are their biggest fall-back. I generally use mine in the field to transverse, create points, routes, mark trails or deer sightings. Then download to PC and create a more easily viewed, editable map. Some allow you to overlay your maps/points/trails onto an aerial map, ie; Google Satellite Map. Do you need/want the GPS software to be able to do this? Mapping software can get $$. Attached is a sample of what you can do with A GPS’s mapping software. It's only a map of 60 acres, but shows boundaries, ATV trails, current treestand locations & proposed trails/stands. Also have a 2nd map with all the deer sightings, trail cam photos, deer paths, etc. Imagine that overlaid onto a satellite/aerial map...! Bottom line: First off, don't get overwhelmed by the technology, it's pretty basic. GPS navigation is a tool, not a "must have"!! If you want to update from USGS Topo maps & a compass, then GPS is the way to go. Get the best GPS you can afford, but only to the point of not regretting the $$$ spent. Avoid units with all the "bling". Nothing wrong with buying a basic, functioning, used GPS first.

Been to the Auburn BP several times, but have rarely found what I really wanted. Not worth the $20 in gas I spend to go browse the store. Generally shop online and can get exactaly what I want in the size/color/style I need. Prefer Cabela's to BP's online items, but usually can be found cheaper using Google search.

Several years back I used the bottom line Magellan hand-held GPS. It was OK for what I expected out of it. Upgraded a couple years ago to a Garmin hand-held GPSMAP 60CSX. Has a larger viewing screen, colors and updated mapping software. Both GPS units functioned well, the Garmin was more expensive and a little more accurate. Also with the extra expense, you get more bells & whistles you probably will never use. The best feature of both units, but more so the Garmin was the mapping software. When you park your vehicle and head to a hunting spot, you'll set waypoints along the way. Like leaving breadcrumbs along a path to find your way back. On a hand-held 2-3" screen, points get cluttered, trails or routes are difficult to see. Zoom in and you lose the overall larger map view. This is fine if you are letting the GPS lead you to/from a spot. If you want the big view of your area, the mapping software is great. USP connections communicate with your PC & the GPS unit. Your PC can print-out larger maps for viewing showing stand locations, deer sightings, landmarks, etc. A lot of GPS reviews on the web, take them at face value. Some real hard-core GPS users give bad reviews to units that function well for the casual user. Nothing wrong with a used GPS, be warned that older units are NOT supported in new PC operating systems. Which basically disables any mapping capabilities or interfacing with the unit & PC. Like any other electronic gizmo, you pay for the bells & whistles.
