  1. Such a beautiful girl, Larry...Definitely takes after her Mom...<<grin>>... She and I would make a wonderful couple...I have been nailed 4 times..Once with a shotgun, once with a muzzleloader, once with a .280 and once with a 7mm08... She and I could sit around and admire each other's scar tissue.....<<sigh>>......
  2. I have been hunting deer for over 50 years....I have stillhunted, stand hunted, treestand hunted and have done a lot of driving deer.. You take the shots as they come, and many of those shots are at moving deer, or you don't shoot at all... Nowadays, I prefer to sit in a comfortable stand, with a steady rest, and shoot at unalarmed deer as the opportunity presents itself... That's just me., being relatively old, fat and lazy.....Hehehehe...
  3. Epecially RUNNING deer.....No better sighting system for running deer than a low power scope....
  4. Welcome home, Bugsy !! After you and the missus get settled in and are feeling better, we'll have to meet at Fran's for dinner again !
  5. If I ever had to defend myself against any kind of bear with a handgun, I'd want the hardcast ammo.. However, the only time I would consider using a handgun would be if I somehow got separated from my much more effective primary weapon, my rifle or shotgun...I guess that's why you'd call it a backup, eh ? I considered carrying a handgun when I was hunting Alaska and the presence of grizzlies made the threat of a bear attack a little more plausible, especially when packing meat or approaching a kill...I decided the extra weight wasn't worth it... I did take a .45 to keep under my pillow at night in case Ol' Leroy came into the tent at night and decided I was a sandwich lying there in my sleeping bag, but I never carried it while hunting, because I had enough stuff to carry over the rough terrain...However, I never went anywhere without my rifle You go to the creek to get some water, you carry your rifle...You go out back of the tent to answer the call of nature, you carry your rifle...
  6. That's a BRAGGING group, Hock ...<<grin>>...I'm a big fan of Barnes X-type bullets....I tend to load them light for caliber and as fast as I can and still maintain good accuracy...Ask Lawdwaz about his experience with the 80 grain Barnes in the .243.... I have been shooting the 120 Grain TSX in my 7mm08 , running about 3000 FPS for several years now and if there is a better deer bullet, I haven't found it..They expand reliably and penetrate like crazy..I haven't recovered one yet.
  7. Actually it is not a 4 inch difference....The rifle is sighted 2.5- 3 " high at 100, so it is only 1.5" high....I don't worry about it.
  8. Never had a problem...Four inches still puts me point blank with a center ribcage hold out to 300 yards or a little farther
  9. Every rifle shot fine....The .280 threw the first shot about 4" over the bull, as it usually does with a cold, clean barrel....Everything else was grouping nicely about 2-3 " above the bull at 100, which will give me about a 250 yard zero with all 3 rifles.. My buddy went along and brought his new Taurus 9MM pocket pistol....We put about 50 rounds through it...It is a nice, concealable carry gun and is plenty accurate enough for what it is designed for, but the trigger was AWFUL !! I had trouble holding my breath long enough to squeeze it....made me appreciate my snubby Smith .38, even though it does only hold 5 rounds... he also had a Korean War vintage M1 carbine that we had some fun running some rounds through...Fun to shoot and nice to carry, but in a combat situation I'd rather have my Garand...
  10. I'm taking my 3 primary deer rifles to the range this morning to make sure they are still dialed in...I'll be shooting my Rem 700 Mountain rifle in 7mm08, my Win M70 lightweight in .280 Rem, and my Springfield m03A3 sporter in 30-06...
  11. I'm being entertained, and I learned something...Let 'er ROLL !!............hehehehe............
  12. I ahve a couple of very special knives...One is a Buck 110 that my ex-wife gave me the first year we were married...I used it for many years and went back several times to paw through gutpiles to recover it..In September of 1989 in Alaska, I used it to butcher two bull moose by myself in one day..I no longer carry it for fear of losing it.. My another special knife is a Puma folder that I bought for my Dad in the late 1970's...I re-inherited it when he died in 1994....It is a great knife and I used it a lot...
  13. I have about 20 quality knives, Bucks, case and pumas....Then 3 years ago my Canadian buddy gave me one of those Havelons....That is all I have used since and my field dressing chores have never been easier....
  14. It is the dreaded venomous dingleberry....Better known as the VD plant.....
  15. I duuno, Jeff....However Don was the one busted for offering a young lady to drop charges against her in exchange for a BJ... he was no longer JP after that...hehehehe...
  16. Probably fallow deer...They are often raised for "commercial" venison... I have never tried it, but I have heard that it is really good... Personally, the best venison I have eaten is fat caribou taken in late August or early September BEFORE the rut....I have also heard that the very best wild venison is Sitka Blacktail, but I have never been lucky enough to sample it...It was on my bucket list, but time has caught up with me and I;ll never get to do it....
  17. Separate the shoulder blade from the leg bone, trim the fat, and roast it whole as a pot roast....Excellent in the crock pot, or in a dutch oven with saurkraut'. The rest of the meat either grind or use as stew meat.
  18. Steuben is a big county....It's not like there is a big buck behind every tree... However, the hunting is very good...
  19. Hmmmm...I have spent an afternoon or two in Campbell.........Years ago I hunted quite a bit in the Woodhull area also..We probably have some mutual aquaintances..
  20. I heard it called GRAVY on one episode of the Sopranos...That's good enough for me....Hehehehehe....
  21. Lived my entire life in Steuben, except for a couple of years working for Uncle Sam back in 1971-1973.... So where in Steuben are you, Rob..?..I live in beautiful downtown Addison, and have property in Tuscarora, unit 8x...I previously owned property in Rathbone 8T and have permission to hunt on several properties in that unit, as well as unit 8Y near Caton..
  22. A buddy of mine lost 2 in one year to bears...I bought a couple of metal bear boxes for mine...They work...I have had a few FULL FACE pictures of bears with no damage to the cameras..
