Geeze, Dan.....I get the same response from women but usually it's when I ask them for a date...
-
Those Springfields ARE heavy....My 03A3 sporter weighs nearly as much as my M1 Garand....Of course they can be lightened, but removing that extra weight cost $$$... I did a little search on the .35 Krag....Even dies need to be custom made...COOL , but not too practical, at least for a poor old white boy like me...

Congrats from ANOTHER grandpaw !! Hope the girls continue to do fine !!

That taxidermist is still around but he's a salaried employee for Corning Inc. now..He still does occasional mounts for special friends.. I had a couple mounts done by him ( in my former life) and his work was superb.. I think I may know who your uncle was << wink, wink>>....

Kittery.....Cool place !! I never saw a .35 Krag either...Ballistically I am guessing it would be sort of like a .35 Rem on steroids...A little more power than the Rem, but less than the Whelen...

Nope...Can't dance worth a damn... I am pretty good at filleting fish and cooking , though, if that makes a difference .... I'd also be willing to bet next months SS check that I can skin a squirrel faster than anybody she has dated.. THAT should impress her !!...<<smile>>...

Your first goose had a band !! How cool is THAT !! Good luck, Jennifer ! I love waterfowling, but like you I am not on a major flight route..I have had some great hunts over the years, but in this area they are the exception rather than the rule...I would love to live somewhere that offered good , consistent waterfowling. I'd rather hunt ducks than deer anytime..They taste great, they are easier to carry home, and the decoys are much lighter.

Yup....Like most predators, eagles are opportunists.. A couple of Amishmen got arrested this year up near our property for putting out a poisoned carcass to kill the " hawks" that were taking their lambs...It resulted in the confirmed death of two eagles plus who knows how many more predators that died and were not reported..

Actually, if I were to get a Sharps it would have to be in one the original straight walled chamberings that it was designed for.. I'm kind of a traditionalist that way.....I'd have some good local support, too...The local gunsmith in Campbell worked for Sharps for about 10 years as a master gunsmith...He is a wonderful gunsmith and is also very talented in metal working ( engraving) inlays and stock work such as checkering and carving, and he is very much into late nineteenth century single shot rifles.. Google up " Artistry in Arms"....

DANG !! I wish I was 40 years younger and about a foot taller !! I really am a pretty good catch, though...I still have some of my hair, most of my teeth, and all of my social security.. And REALLY, Good Buddy, wouldn't you like me for a son-in-law ??

Pretty girl, Larry !! Obviously she takes after her Mom....<<grin>>....

Shucks Bugsy, at that price I'll buy two or three !!

Duck opener tomorrow. A bit worried about my lab

Trade her in on a Chessie........JUST KIDDING..!!!..... -
I'd buy one in a heartbeat if they chambered .303 British or perhaps 30/40 Krag... But then I'm just an eccentric old fart....<,grin>>.... Ruger made a limited run of .303s in their #1 a few years back, but they marketed them in Canada..I'd love to have one of those.

Yeah, my Mountain Rifle is between 25 and 30 years old... It was one of the early DBM models, although I would have preferred a drop floorplate if It had been available . Fit and finish are good and it is very accurate.
-
Salmon....I have both a Mountain Rifle and a .280, but not in the same package... My Mountain Rifle ( walnut/blued) is in a 7mm08 and my .280 is in a M70 lightweight ( blued/laminate). They are my 2 main hunting rifles and have efficiently killed everything from woodchucks to Alaskan bull moose. I cannot think of a negative thing to say about either one of them, and trust me, neither one has been babied... I use the Mtn rifle the most, because I mostly hunt whitetails now, but for hunting all game ( except big bears) all over the continent, the .280 has been a killing machine, from point blank to 400 yards... If I had to sell all of my rifles but one, the .280 would be the one I would keep.
-
Damn, Larry, when you first suggested that I thought I might be able to afford a new rifle... Then I realized that my platelets aren't marketable because of all of the pharmecuticals in my blood, and it has been YEARS since anybody expressed an interest in receiving any of my sperm......<<sigh>>.....

Was that a M94 Winchester ?? Or perhaps a single shot of some configuration ? Also could have been a Marlin lever...

As Moog ( aka Big Chooch) says, the Zeiss is a quality scope at an excellent price..The Euro scopes tend to run a bit heavy, but with a hard hitter like the .300 mag you could probably USE a little extra weight. I am a huge Leupold fan myself...Can't go wrong with a Leupy. Be sure you pick a scope with ample eye relief..."Scope Eye" from a .300 mag is not fun. Considering that you are not going to be shooting past 300 yards, you don't need any fancy lights or ranging reticules or any of the rest of that nonsense. A plain or duplex reticule will work just fine, and 9 power is plenty of magnification for your high end. Keep it simple...Good luck and enjoy your new toy.

OOOOOO !! I LIKE laminate....My workhorse push feed M70 in .280 has a brown laminate stock...While I love walnut, I think some of the laminates are very attractive also.. They also don't show the dings as much as walnut..Mine has suffered hard use ( and abuse) in several wilderness areas, sometimes for two weeks at a time, but unless you look VERY close, it could pass as a new gun.

2016 Small Game Hunting Official (unofficial) Thread!

Yeah, it warms MY heart too, and I'm sure she'd rather snuggle up to a couple of beagle pups than my raggedy old butt... However, the hounds belong to one of my male HUNTING partners...He's single (widowed) and may very well be snuggled up to all 3 beagles as we speak.. They may be watching " Old Yeller" for all I know... -

Very cool, Tacks..Especially the picture of the Browning Double Auto...<< Pygmy trembles with envy>>... My partner has 3 beagles, including two pups, 5 and 6 months old, who are both running open on the track already... I am dying to get out with him as soon as I get this Xmas stuff out of the way... -
Happy Birthday, My Friend !!

Vortex Diamondback 3.5-10x50/ Ruger 10/.22
Pygmy replied to turkeyfeathers's topic in General Chit Chat
If I thought I needed a variable, I'd check out some of the quality compacts available. My 10/22 wears a Burris 4powerX 20mm compact . Lawdwaz has a Leupold 4 powerX 33 on his.... It doesn't take a very big scope to make a small carbine like the 10/22 top heavy. -
Here's a quote from Dave Petzal, in regard to the medium ( .33 to .375) calibers.... " The effect on game of a heavy, medium caliber bullet must be witnessed to be appreciated"...
