I stuff mine with toilet paper...That way if I ever get caught short....... Actually there is a cool story behind my Lynch Foolproof box. Back in the late 70's I went into a sporting goods store in Corning to buy a box call. They had maybe a dozen Lynch Foolproofs on the shelf, for $17 each... Doug Henyan, the store owner, let me open the boxes ( that was BEFORE blister pacs) and try each call to see which one I liked the sound of best. I killed a lot of birds with that call.It was my go-to box call until I had a custom box made by Bob Harwell in SC, who was a student of the late Neil Cost. The Foolproof still rides in my vest, but the Harwell call usually does the talking these days.

Your Neighbor Comes Over With A Bottle...........
Pygmy replied to Lawdwaz's topic in General Chit Chat
None of my neighbors are that thoughtfull... When I was up in Ontario this spring, my HOST told me his neighbor was bringing me over a bottle. I was hoping for Crown Royal...Instead he brought a blend named 40 Creek...I was disappointed at first, but it turned out the 40 Creek was PFG, although still not quite as good as Crown.. -
He was Bs ing you Larry.... The real secret is to rub the box call with virgin oil... Problem #1 is where to find a virgin... Problem #2 is how to render some of that oil without getting arrested...

There are turkeys on Long Island...??... I'll be damned ! I wouldn't know since back in 1977 I swore I would never again go east of the Hudson...<<grin>>...
-
The main reason that warmer weather might trigger more gobbling is that a few warm days would encourage more hens to start incubating... Gobbling is ALL about the hens... That's not based on scientific fact, but I am perfectly willing to fight about it <<grin>>...

MS Doe certainly appears "preggers" to me, or to put it more delicately, she is " in a family way".....

Yeah, Paulie...And I have my thermacell and my " Buzz-Off" facemask all packed in my vest, too ... Now if I can just avoid stepping on one of those Cameron rattlesnakes....<<grin>>.....

I don't think woodchucks have any "fur" per se to be of any value, although a guy in Corning used to dye the tail hair different colors and make tandem streamers , locally called " Wally's Woodchucks". They were ( and may still be) popular for fast trolling for smallmouths and salmonoids on Keuka, Seneca, and probably some of the other Finger lakes. However,, woodchuck hide is very tough, and according to an article that I read many, many years ago in Fur-Fish-Game, it makes excellent leather when tanned.

For some reason 8MM cartridges have never caught on in this country. The very similar 8MM Rem mag never caught fire either... Perhaps they are just too close to the popular .300 Win mag or the excellent .338 Win mag.... There are some excellent bullets available in the 180-225 grain range... It is an excellent cartridge, but if you buy one I would advise you to buy a lifetime supply of brass.

We're going into the home stretch now, and at last we have a warming trend. Good luck to all of you who have tags remaining..

Yes, Larry, I have been using the Faulk's. Despite the fact that I have not had much response to it THIS season, it is the loudest, most authentic sounding crow caller I have ever used.
-
I have not had a gobble in response to my crow call this year. But then I haven't had very many of them gobble at my turkey calls, either. However, over the years, I have had DOZENS, if not HUNDREDS of birds gobble at my crow call. I don't even bother carrying a hooter or a gobble call anymore. My crow call is LOUD, RASPY and sounds like a real crow.. Most guys I hear in the woods sound like a hunter blowing a crow call, more like a sick bluejay than a real crow.

Looks like a large dog.
