  1. I mowed my lawn for the first time today.. Neighbors on both sides mowed THEIRS and shamed me into it.. That means I'll be a SLAVE to my damn grass every 4 or 5 days for at least 3 months, maybe more if we have a wet summer.. I've been threatening to pour the whole lawn to concrete and paint it green.
  2. I was wondering when you'd check in here, Stubby ! Good to hear from you..I knew you'd have some input ,,,<<grin>>..
  3. Woops ! I didn't say I OWN any..I just said I LIKE 'em....<<whistleing>>....
  4. Guns are my weakness...Something about fondling that cold steel makes me fall in LOVE, especially if it is a good deal.. I have been considering buying a new expensive turkey decoy this spring, but so far I have resisted the urge, since the half dozen I have out in my garage did the job just FINE the last few seasons..
  5. I shot lots of 'em when I was a kid. It's the only illegal thing I have ever done other than that unsafe tire I told y'all about. I figure the statute of limitations should have expired by now...
  6. Thanks ALOT !! Now I'll be listening to " The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald" playing in my HEAD all night long....<<smirk>>...
  7. Tough break, Real...The lake only allows you to fish when it WANTS you to fish..
  8. Attica ? Geeze Girlfriend, I didn't know..... How many years are you in for ?
  9. I prefer to have his neck stretched, but if he's close enough I just kill him. If he is in good range, I don't screw around..I kill him.. I have had too many encounters go bad at the last second.. I remember a quote from "The Old Pro Turkey Hunter" by Gene Nunnery.. " Whenever you are in contact with an adult gobbler, there are events taking place every second, any one of which may result in your winning or losing the game ." Or words to that effect. Did I mention the fact that when he is in range and I can get my gun on him, I KILL him.?
  10. Looks like a Ruger to me...But then. my eyesight isn't that good.. My Mom TOLD me I'd go blind if I didn't stop doing that !!
  11. Wear your ear protection, Born...That sucker has to be LOUD !!
  12. Great info, TF...Those XRs are awesome in your shotgun... I have some to pattern in my 3" 1187 with a .665" Kick's choke and a Leupy 1 x4 ...
  13. Back when I was learning to hunt turkeys there WEREN'T any turkey videos, in fact there was not a LOT of stuff in print about turkey hunting. A few writers like Dave Harbour, Dwain Bland and Charles Elliot wrote about it, but they were few and far between. I got my first calling lessons from a 45 RPM record recorded by M.L.Lynch himself.. Still got the record, but I don't have a record player anymore.
  14. Good luck to you and your lovely bride ! I know how those trips go..It seems that have to take as much stuff for a few days as you would if you were going for a month !
  15. Maytom..How's Preacher doing ? I haven't heard from him since Christ was a carpenter..
  16. I got rid of my auto pistols a few years back and went to revolvers, all S&W. They are foolproof and dependable for either myself or the Mermaid. All my handguns are on her permit also. When you pull the trigger they go BANG every time, unless you forget to LOAD them..hehehe.. I find the J frame snubs very concealable. Auto pistols ARE cool, though, especially the classics like the 1911 and Walther PP series. I never could warm up to the new breed polymer guns like the Glocks and similar models.
  17. Nesting cover and escape cover are EVERYTHING regarding pheasant survival.. Pen raised birds, although some survive and reproduce, do not have tenacity of wild birds.. A program of trap and transfer of wild stock might succeed, but the vital habitat factors would have to be present.. It is lot different now than back in the 60s when tens of thousands of acres of soil bank acreage provided excellent pheasant habitat. A fallow goldenrod field looks like wonderful pheasant habitat in the fall, but in the winter it is basically just a pile of sticks..
  18. I'm tickled pink that you found the rig you were looking for... I'm sure she'll be a KILLER !!
  19. I'm picturing myself, sitting in the hot tub with Miranda Lambert, waiting for a turkey to gobble..... Or something.......
  20. Well....Errr.... Ok Larry... Gotta sign off now...It's time for me to go write the check for my weekly donation to the local Widows and Orphans fund...
  21. Up until about ten years ago, I was a runner and gunner. I had large amounts of acreage that I could hunt and I often covered several miles on foot in a morning's hunt. Now the amount of property I can hunt is considerably less and I can't physically do what I could do just a few years ago, so my hunt style has become more sedentary. I now spend most of my time in a blind with a decoy setup. I have had mixed results with both alert hen decoys and jake decoys. Oddly, I have had more adult birds spook at a jake decoy than any other decoy. My favorite setup is a full strut gobbler with two feeding hens. I use a Pretty Boy full strut decoy with a real fan. I have had very few gobblers spook at this set. Usually they either challenge the gobbler decoy or ignore it and go to a hen. I only use the full strut tom in setups where I will not be in the line of fire if someone sneaks in and takes a shot at it, even if I have exclusive permission on the property. You never know. I like my decoys no more than than 20 yards from my blind, so that if a gobbler sets up a strut pattern outside the decoys he will still be in range. I think realistic decoys are definitely more effective. I have a friend who fills his tags in two states every spring with a recurve, and he uses a real taxidermy mounted hen for a decoy. He says his average shot is about 10 yards. My most successful single decoy is a feeding bobblehead hen. A little breeze gives the decoy some motion, adding to the realism. I am considering buying an Avian feeder to go with my bobblehead. They are very authentic. They are pricy but they may be worth the price.
  22. I have not had a LOT of experience with steel loads, probably no more than 500 rounds, BUT I have not had good results with full choke tubes even if they were designed for steel. A few years ago I started using IC tubes for all of the shooting I do with steel, and I began to have much better results.
