  1. Another gimmick, like the fighting purrs and screaming peacock... 99% of the time, if a gobbler is GOING to come in, he'll come in to hen yelps and clucks.. One of the deadliest woods callers that I know( who happens to be an ex NYS calling champ) uses yelps and clucks on a mouth call nearly exclusively.. Last year he limited out in PA and NY on four longbeards in 4 consecutive days. He doesn't use any props like decoys or blinds, either...He just sits up against a tree, or very often, lays on the ground behind a log or a hump in the woods, and calls 'em in and kills 'em. I hate him....<< grin>>....
  2. Growie..Just as an aside... Are you using HV hollow points in your .22 ? Looking back on my experience shooting coons ( and also woodchucks) with a .22 rimfire, regular solid long rifles are not very effective for body shots. They will kill the animal, but usually not stop it immediately unless you hit the CNS ( brain or spine). The hollow points are MUCH more effective and will kill them much quicker with body shots..They are also somewhat less likely to exit and do damage to objects behind the target, as in when you are shooting inside a building.
  3. I think you're on the right track, Eagle..
  4. Oh yeah....And GROWIE is sitting on the couch watching reruns of "The A-Team" ( she likes Mr T) eating bon bons and carving another notch in the stock of her 10-22...
  5. Everything should be OK now, except the poor coon is shot full of holes, the poor dog is traumitized for life, and Poor Mr B. is still hiding behind the tractor hoping he doesn't catch a stray bullet.. <<< grin >>>...... The coon is up in RACCOON HEAVEN right now, still looking for his TAIL...hehehehe...
  6. I shot three deer with them, one with the 117 grain in a 25-06 and a couple with the 120 grain in the .260 Rem. The deer all died and they seemed to perform as well as other standard cup/core bullets I have used.
  7. Never shot a deer with a .357 or any other "standard" handgun round, except for a mercy killing with a .38 semi wadcutter in the back of the head. However, I expect that most any 158 grain jacketed soft point would do a decent job out to 50 yards, assuming good shot placement, of course. What I would avoid are the lighter, higher velocity loadings, like the 110 or 125 HP, which might not give sufficient penetration should you hit heavy bone..
  8. Geeeze, Growie...Maybe you should get a bayonet on that .22 for going hand to hand with those charging killer coons....<<wink>>... My Old Fat Father had coon dogs all of his life...I have been involved in many hound/coon fights..It does get exciting at times.. Gotta be careful in the heat of battle..A few years back a local hunter got involved in trying to help his hound in a tooth & claw battle with a big coon.. He decided to whack the coon with the butt of his rifle...Big mistake..He shot himself in the stomach and died before his buddies could get medical help for him. Anyway, I hope you get your pup patched up... What kind of a dawg is she ..?? How big ??..
  9. There should be no guilt involved in asking for a reschedule if you have a conflict. I believe doing one's duty, whether it be jury, military ( yes, my generation had to deal with the draft during an unpopular war) or whatever, but we have the right to live our lives, too.. Rescheduling so that you don't have to miss important events ( like a special birthday) or change prearranged plans is NOT shirking one's duty.
  10. What size and color do you want..?..I have a few ; probably no more than a half dozen, if that. They are fairly large ( perhaps 4") and are chartreuse with black diamonds, if I remember correctly. PM me if you are interested.
  11. There are a couple of spots where I hunt gobblers in Ontario where there are open hardwoods ( mostly maple) and the ground is COVERED with a blanket of leeks and trilliums, all growing together.. The entire forest floor is green and white as far as you can see..Beautiful !..
  12. Good point..No harm in allowing for a margin of error.
  13. Doc, do a Google search on "Wild Leeks" or "Ramps" and you'll find lots of info, including pictures. Although the bulbs resemble green onions, the tops do not, having a much broader leaf.
  14. So do I, Elmo... Gives me one more excuse to HANDLE this beauty !!...
  15. A buddy of mine pickled some last year... They were SUPERB !! I need to get his recipe and do some up myself this year.
  16. The short answer is YES, it is illegal.
  17. She could just close her left eye...Somewhat of a disadvantage when wingshooting, but no big deal when shooting deliberately, as in turkey hunting or rifle shooting. OR as several people said, get her shooting from her left shoulder..Left handed guns are OK, but she can learn to use right handed guns when shooting from her left shoulder also..I know a number of lefties who have no problem with right hand ejection or empties ejecting across is front of thier face.
  18. The site I sent Lawdwaz wasn't a porn site.. It was about turtles.... " Snappers R Us "....
  19. Yeah, Greene, that was a great one !! RR was the last candidate that I really WANTED to vote for, rather than just voting for the lesser of two evils...
  20. I've met those dogs....They're real KILLERS !!
  21. " I did NOT have sex with that woman"...Bill Clinton... " MONICA, when are you going to have that damned dress cleaned ?"...Bill Clinton...
  22. This question was raised on the forum a couple of years ago and I do not remember there being a definitive answer. These regulations were instituted before modern "biological" type man made baits such as "Gulp" even existed, and have not been revised to cover the new developments. Technology of plastics such as "rubber worms" was in it's infancy when these ALO waters were defined. Artificial lures at the time meant basically spoons, spinners, plugs and flies. I do know a number of people who regularly fish ALO waters with baits such as "Gulp" leeches, and have not heard of anybody being pinched for it.
  23. How articulate ! Let me get some popcorn ...
  24. I'm glad to hear that your womenfolk are home to take care of you, Larry... I was worried about you...I was about to send The Mermaid up with a big casserole of tuna & noodles and a fresh batch of homemade cookies.. P.S...Good job on the Dog Doo Duty....
  25. Probably true, Growie... However, many of the people that I personally know that are rabidly phobic of serpents are males... Not GIRLYMEN, either, but big, rugged, hairy chested macho types who would kick butt in a bar fight but scream and run like little girls when they encounter a garter snake..
