  1. You see them close to a body of water because that is where they LIVE.. They know they are vulnerable on land, so they walk to the NEAREST suitable place to dig a hole and lay thier eggs..This, of course gives the hatchlings a little better chance to get back to the water/marsh/swamp before they are devoured by predators, such as coons, possums, herons, etc. etc.
  2. Hehehehehe... When my daughter brought home a boyfriend, I made it a point to be sitting at the snackbar in the kitchen, either field-stripping my .45 or sharpening a big knife, and SMILING...Hehehe...
  3. Maine moose tend to run big for thier subspecies ( Eastern Canada moose), probably due to the short seasons and the limited number of tags issued... Unlike Ontario, Quebec, or Newfoundland, where bulls over 50" are rare, a good number of 50" to 60" bulls are taken each season.
  4. When in Rome, do as the Romans do... SO, here in the foothills of the Appallachians, despite knowing proper pronunciation, a sabot will remain a " SABBIT".. Also, a creek will remain a " CRIK " and those good riflescopes will remain a " LEE-a- pold".... That way my buddies, friends and neighbors will know what I am talking about.<<grin>>....
  5. I just read on another site that at current rates, a non-resident of Maine will take an average of 85 years to draw a tag... Congrats again on beating the odds, Hunter !!..The lottery began in 1980, and there are many residents as well as nonresidents who have applied every year and are still waiting for thier first tag. I applied for about 20 years and finally gave up
  6. That's exactly what is happening... Often they lay thier eggs in the dirt/gravel right on the shoulder of the road.. Back in the day when I caught snapping turtles to eat, I would always wait until July.. June snappers always have eggs in them..They look like minature ping pong balls, and will even BOUNCE a little if you drop them on a hard surface.
  7. Sounds great.. On one of my Alaska trips I spotted for my buddy while he shot a big bull at about 250 yards with his M70 .300 Win Mag.. He made a perfect center lung shot a the bull ran a few yards and tipped over...I'll never forget seeing the hair part ( through my spotting scope) when the bullet hit that moose..He was shooting 180 Grain Speer Grand Slams..I know because I loaded the ammo for him. I assume the grouse ( or pah-tridge as the Mainers call them), will be open..Last year was a banner year for grouse up there...Hopefully you can pop a nice bull early and then get in some bird hunting.
  8. YEAH, Man !! Details , DETAILS....
  9. Sorry to hear about your bad fortune, Phade.. I lost my house to a fire about 20 years ago.. I was lucky enough to save my guns and most of my hunting stuff, but a lot of stuff went up in smoke, including the house itself.. I must admit that my insurance company came through for me, with a minimum amount of hassle.
  10. Congrats !! That is almost like hitting the lottery.. I know a LOT of people who have applied a LOT of years, and I don't personally know ANYONE who has ever drawn in Maine. I'm happy for your good fortune..
  11. Sir Thomas was an Englishmen and perhaps he just IMPROVED the can... Brings to mind another Englishman... Back in 1835, a Muslim in Iraq invented the condom, using the lower intestine of a goat. In 1875, an Englishman, Sir Sedgewick Wimple- Muffdiver, perfected the condom by removing it from the goat before he used it.
  12. Same here...Lime's on the ground, got the seed and the fertilizer just waiting for the ground dry up enough to plant.. Story of my life..All dressed up and ready to go. Don't ya just HATE cocking your pistol and then having to let the hammer down ?
  13. Didn't Sir William Crapper invent the can ?
  14. If cannibals eat a clown, does he taste "funny"...? Why did Kamikaze pilots wear crash helmets ? If there are disgruntled employees, do you call the other employees "gruntled". ? What's the speed of DARK..?
  15. Wooley...In response to the title of your thread... We ALL know that you are confused and need help.. So what's your POINT..??..<grin>...
  16. As long as you leave it alone, it will mind it's own business and keep out of your way.. If you decide to catch it relocate it, just remember the fact that although is is not venomous, but it WILL strike aggressively to defend itself and it's teeth can deliver a nasty bite.
  17. I've always been a Slim Pickins fan... That is one of the funniest movies ever..Has to rate in at least the top 10...hehehehe. " SOMEBODY's got to go back and get a S**TLOAD of DIMES "...
  18. " Camptown ladies sing dat song, Doo-DAH Doo-DAH...!!..."
  19. Depends on how long you expect to live... Heck, I don't even buy green bananas << grin>>...
  20. That's a scandalous picture... Steve and Doe with a couple of HOES....
  21. I heard that Dolly Parton tried to bowhunt once but she kept getting her boobs wrapped up in the cables..
  22. Milk snake...Locally, they are called "spotted adders" which is a colorful but incorrect term. If you corner them, they are quite aggressive, but they are non-venomous.
  23. Doewhacker posted a few times during gobbler season...
  24. Sounds familiar..I'm darn near deaf in my left ear and can't hear that well out of my right ear.. Came from shooting too much trap and skeet in my late teens/early twenties WITHOUT hearing protection....DUH..!!.... Being bulletproof at that age, I thought hearing protection was for GIRLY MEN.. Now I am a half deaf old DUMMY !!
