  1. Defintely can't kill a turkey with more or less shells than SEVEN... Buy them at KMART....Be sure to get there before wheel of fortune... I'm a VERY GOOD turkey hunter..In the driveway....
  2. Teebug..Glad you satrted this thread..I'm leaving tomorrow morning for Ontario for the opener Thursday, and I DARN near forgot my crow call.. Let's see... crow call 2 box calls 3-4 mouth calls 1 pot call and striker scotchbrite chalk mask 2 pairs gloves compass twist ties, pen rubber bands toilet paper..in a ziploc. 7 shells That's SEVEN..not six...not eight...SEVEN...If I shoot one I make sure I replace it before the next hunt...The proper number of shells is SEVEN !! bottle of water When hunting Canada, I carry a ziploc with my license, tags and gun registration papers. I also carry my binocs around my neck and always have a knife in my pocket. Hunting the woods, I leave the binocs home, but for field hunting I find them indespensible. If I'm planning to do a decoy setup I carry 2 inflatables and one bobble head in my game pouch.
  3. LOL..!!... Good thing you said you're cuddling your deer rifle, rather than a SHORTER range weapon...
  4. Elmo... You look like private Pyle ..?.. Was that BEFORE or AFTER he blew his brains out..?...<< grin >>....
  5. Great story and pictures, Cabin... Good job, my friend.. I offer my most sincere congrats to you and your lovely daughter..!!..
  6. Boo... Most Brownings tend to be rather tightly choked for thier choke designation.. I am talking about standard barrels, not choke tube equipped barrels, and since you said your A5 is full choke, I assume it is a full choke, non tubed barrel.. The pattern board tells the REAL story, and I would highly recommend doing some patterning at 30-40 yards with some different shot loads to find your best pattern, I.E. one that gives a minimum of 6 or more pellet hits on a turkey's head/spine . All that said, if your gun is 2 3/4", I would recommend trying buffered, copper plated magnum loads ( 1 3/8 to 1 5/8 oz) of #6, # 5 or #4 shot.. I'd try the # 6 loads first..Chances are you won't have to go any farther.. Good shells to try are Winchester XX mags, Federal Premiums, or Remington Nitro mags, but there are other good loads by Kent, Fiocchi, and others. All of them feature plated, buffered shot loads. Good luck and keep us posted...<<smile>>...
  7. That would have been my guess..I thought you were a pump gun person.... The BPS is a good design and the bottom ejection/tang safety is great for southpaws.. A buddy of mine just sold one just like yours in mint condition for $300. He had won it a few years ago on a raffle ticket and no longer hunts...
  8. I'd be the first one to say " If it ain't BROKE, don't FIX it".....LOL... What Model is your Browning...? I have an A-5 Light Twenty...Sweet little shotgun... My first 3 inch 12 gauge was a Browning A-5 magnum...Great gun and I killed a bunch of turkeys with it, along with lots of ducks and geese, back when you could shoot lead shot at waterfowl. Beautiful gun, but it was long, heavy and kicked like a mule..I eventually swapped it for a Rem 1100, which was somewhat easier to carry around and MUCH gentler on my shoulder.
  9. You mean the RAT, or ROSIE...???...
  10. I wonder what did him in ?? Do you suppose that Rosie O'Donnell had a hair appointment and had a little intestinal distress and GASSED the unfortunate little rodent to death ?? Naw...Couldn't have been Rosie..The chair wasn't big enough...
  11. Tomorrow or the next day... I need to get it done because I'm leaving Wednesday for gobbler season in Ontario. I HATE to do it the first time, because that means it will need mowing every 3 or 4 days until AT LEAST July....<<sigh>>....
  12. Glad you survived, lawdwaz... I considered duck hunting once, but after considering the hazards of being around SWAMPS, I decided to stick with croquet and badminton... Won't you stop over to my place tomorrow after your nail appointment for some nice tea and crumpets ?
  13. Please forgive, because you did not not ask for advice, Growie , and I realize that unsolicted advice is usually about as welcome as a dead whale in your backyard in August. However, looking at your pattern density, I'd definitely try going to # 6 shot in the same payload to thicken up your pattern a bit. Your 30 yard patterns are getting a bit sparse with the 5 s.. No problem with individual pellet energy with # 6 shot..It WILL cut the mustard inside of 40 yards.. I can really see NO advantage of using shot larger than #6 in a 20 gauge.. In a larger gauge with a heavier payload, perhaps, but not in a 20. Personally, I'd like to see "heavy for gauge" loads of premium 7 1/2 shot for 20 gauge guns..I think they would be awesome within 40 yards. Also, since your pattern seems to be centered low and to the right, I'd consider some kind of adjustable sights to move the pattern to point of aim.. Kentucky windage is OK, but when the adrenaline kicks in it is better to have a gun that shoots to point of aim.. There are a number of adjustable sight options, both optical and mechanical, that you can get for not a whole bunch of $$ that allow you to adjust your pattern to point of aim.. If your Mossy has a rib, there are several fairly low cost sight systems that can be attached right to your rib, and they allow for precision sight adjustments.
  14. It IS common practice, Scott, much to the DELIGHT of those folks who sell those hundred dollar choke tubes and $5 shotshells.....<<grin>>....
  15. That's a good pattern and , applied to the head/neck region of a gobbler, will result in a dead turkey, at least out to and somewhat beyond the distance that you fired at that patterning target.. When I started hunting turkeys in the 1960s, 3 inch magnum 12 gauge guns were just beginning to become popular... The "standard" turkey gun at that time was a 2 3/4" full choke 12 gauge, but many hunters owned only one shotgun and used whatever they had, often a 20 or 16 gauge with a modified choke. My first fall turkey was killed with with a 12 gauge modified choke and regular high brass #4 shot in 1965. A few years later, I took my first spring gobbler with a side by side 20 gauge. As long as the shot was taken within the effective range of the shotgun, turkeys were killed with amazing regularity. The simple minded creatures just hadn't LEARNED yet that it required 3" or 3.5 " magnum guns and $5 apiece shotshells to kill them. Fortunately for them, today's turkeys are much more sophisticated, and refuse to succumb to the crude , outdated guns and ammo that used to be effective on them.
  16. I'll never forget the time I took Doris, Short Wormley's double amputee sister ,down to Abner Whipsnead's pig pasture to watch a concert by my favorite local band, Slim Quail and the Chicken ****in' Five... That was when Slim introduced his all time #1 hit song ... " I Used to Kiss Her on the Lips, But it's All Over Now.." He followed it up with his # 2 hit, that timeless Cajun Ballad, " Don't Wait up for the Shrimp Boats Mama, cuz I'm Comin Home with the Crabs.."
  17. Hehehehehe..I'm sure I laughed when I first saw it back in the 50s, too... That's NINETEEN fifties, not 1850s.. Even I'M not THAT old...<<grin>>...
  18. Growie....I have heard that in order to get the Boston Bomber to confess everything he knows, they are going to strap him to a cot in a closed room and make him listen to " Barry Manilow's Greatest Hits" over and over for 24 hours a day/7 days a week until he spills his guts... For me it would take about 15 minutes.....<<grin>>.....
  19. I'm not sure if it is a sure kill pattern on a Kodiak bear.. However, it will kill the CRAP out of any turkey that ever walked.. What is it you are hunting ?
  20. The slimey little bastard will WISH he had killed himself by the time the feds get through interrogating him.. Hopefully they can get some info regarding any other scumbags involved..
  21. You were just interested in her "down under".... hehehehehe.. BOB SEGER...Cool, Larry... He's one of my favorites... "Night Moves" gives me goosebumps, and reminds me of my own misspent youth..
  22. A couple of years ago I was hunting spring gobblers in Maine with a friend.. He was on his way to the woods one morning before daylight and had to stop his truck to allow a momma woodcock and several nestlings to cross the road in front of him.. He said the baby birds were perhaps the size of a half dollar, and were waddling across the road behind thier mother.. Pretty cool stuff..I wish I was there with him to see it... The best woodcock show I ever had was when I was parked along a woods road just at daylight, listening for a gobbler to sound off on an adjacent hillside. A pair of woodcock landed in the road near me, and I watched the male do his mating dance for the female, after which they both flew off together.. Being the romantic type that I am, I assumed there was a happy ending.
  23. I've been hearing radio announcements for the grand opening of Biekierch's new store in Knoxville, PA... It's only about 1/2 hour drive from my home, so I'll have to check it out, and hopefully pick up a few components that I am needing..
  24. VERY cool, Wooley... Did I ever tell you about the time I was cooking up a gallon of woodcock gizzards, and....
  25. Holy CRAP, Dude !! We have goody two shoes over on the " Dropped That Coyote " thread suggesting that one might lose his hunting license in 32 states for shooting a fricken COYOTE hanging around his barn !! Now you are suggesting that poor Growie should violate the animal cruelty law by shooting poor kitty cats ?? There are articles in the paper weekly where citizens are charged with " cruelty to animals" for shooting unwanted dogs and cats... Are you trying to get Growie in TROUBLE ???.. ANARCHIST..!!...
