  1. I must admit that has been several years since I even hunted with my shotgun, and when I was checking out sabots there was a much more limited selection than there is now. However, just to add my own 2 cents, I always got best accuracy with the Original Winchester BRI 2 3/4" sabots.. I'd get 2" to 4" groups at 100 yards with these and they killed as well as any other slug I ever used, assuming good shot placement.. My slug is a Rem 1100 12 gauge with a 2 3/4 chambered fully rifled cantilever barrel. It seemed that whenever I tried any of the higher velocity stuff in my guns, groups began to spread out..Accuracy of the Rem Copper solids SUCKS in my gun, and it's a Remington barrel. The Win BRI is also one of the least expensive sabot loads. I killed quite a few deer with them ( perhaps 20) and I only ever reovered one slug...It hit the near shoulder, went through the offside shoulder and was beneath the hide on the offside shoulder. Of course ,THAT buck went straight down.
  2. Sounds like fun...Nice fish.. Too bad somebody always has to cheat..<<sigh>>...
  3. Damn !! I wish I still had my " Fanner 50"... I'd really like to swap it for a chance at that BIKE.. Maybe I could carve a fake gun out of a bar of soap, like John Dillinger did, and swap it for a chance on the bike.. Of course, with my luck ( not to mention my decreased co-ordination and balance) I'd probably just fall off the bike and break my stupid old neck... ANOTHER victim of "gun violence"....<<sigh>>...
  4. I miss Steve 863..... Bubba also helped to keep things interesting, whether you loved him or hated him...I was truly sorry to see him stop posting.. In my humble, not too intelligent opinion, one of the functions of a forum like this is to provide ENTERTAINMENT for a bunch of folks who share mutual interests, such as hunting , fishing and the outdoors in general.. Sometimes good folks tend to take it a little too SERIOUSLY.....
  5. I hope it wasn't Tony Soprano that you PO'd... Actually, I can't imagine ANYONE getting PO'd at you... You haven't been sniffing that GLUE again, have you ??...<<grin>>...
  6. Hehehehe..I caught that..I just figured that you had moved to Colorado...
  7. I didn't see the original picture, but from reading the text I think that SOMEBODY is a few fries short of a Happy Meal..!!...

    hatch

They look like they are past the down stage, so they are probably at least 3 weeks old.. Probably most years some poults hatch as early as May 1, while others ( mostly renests) could hatch in July.. The June 11th date was just an average..
  9. Growie...Actually, mankind developed an institution similar to that centuries ago.. It's called " Marriage"....
  10. Never tried squirrel nuts, but squirrel brains are considered a delicacy in some areas...A Navy buddy of mine from West Virginia told me that his family loved them and would take rib shots over head shots with thier squirrel rifles to avoid ruining thier favorite part... Since then I have read that it is a somewhat risky practice because because consuming squirrel brains had been linked with Mad Cow Disease ...Or was it MAD SQUIRREL disease..??.. Anyway, I must sign off now..I have a couple of quarts of pickled woodcock gizzards simmering on the stove.

    hatch

28 days is correct for incubation, give or take a day or two. Rather than depending on when they begin the LAYING process, it depends on when they begin the INCUBATION process... A hen may lay a clutch over a period of 2-4 weeks, but they do not begin to develop until she actually begins setting, after which they usually hatch within a 24 hour period about 28 days later.. I'm sure that's what Growie meant...I'm not trying to be picky, just trying to clarify the process for some of the folks that might not be as familiar with poultry as old country folks like Growie and myself....
  12. No, I think that's an old wives tale, Paula.. Red squirrels ARE more aggressive than greys and I have seen them chase greys, but grey squirrels are also pretty tough customers and are twice as big as reds.. Greys prefer to avoid the conflict, but in an actual tooth and claw battle with a red squirrel, I suspect the grey would prevail... As far as the eating the testicle thing.. Squirrels eat NUTS, don't they ..?... <<grin>>....

    OHH NOO

Tell them that you need the "Magnum non toxic HeviWire" rather than the standard " Thunder Chicken" wire... It costs $100 a roll more, but gives much better performance.

    hatch

A study conducted on the Connecticut Hill State Forest a few years back indicated that the avergae hatching date was June 11th.
  15. The timing is the WORST also...A study done on nesting turkeys in NY a few years back indicated that the average hatching date is June 11th... This weather may be catastrophic for this year's hatch.. The little peeps are vulnerable for about a 3 week period after hatching, before thier down turns to feathers.. If they get wet and chilled, they die from exposure.
  16. I hear ya Paulie !! I just saw some old white haired dude with a long beard and a shepherd's hook go marching past leading a whole line of animals two by two....
  17. I edit a lot too, Growie... I don't use spellcheck and often find spelling or composition errors after I have posted.. Also, I often send a post and have an "afterthought" that I decide to add.. Just part of being "old and infirm", I suppose..<<grin>>...
  18. Just as an aside, I'm not sure why anyone would want to "annoy" a person who carries a gun and a baton.. BTW..I read it the same way WNYBuckhunter does..
  19. Your kayak fishing sounds like a blast, GB..!.. I love all kinds of fishing, but I've never been towed around in a little boat by the fish.. I've never done a lot of salt water fishing, but I've caught enough stripers to appreciate them both as a sport fish and a good eating fish.. Blues, on the other hand, are great fun to catch, but not too great to eat, IMHO.. Do you have a tandem, outrigger kayak..? I'd like to come down fishing with you..LOL...Maybe we could mount a beer cooler between the boats.. BTW...We have some pretty good pike fishing here on Seneca and Cayuga lakes, and some excellent fishing for BIG muskies ( 40 " PLUS) on Waneta Lake.. I've caught plenty of northerns but never got into the musky fishing as much..The only ones I have caught have been incidental catches when I was fishing for walleyes in the Chemung/Tioga/Canisteo river systems.

    OHH NOO

Glad he didn't Paula... I'm too old and feeble to deal with jealous husbands.. Let's just keep it our secret.. You, me and Chester...

    OHH NOO

That was me, Paula... I was wearing my SPIDERMAN mask and my custom DOCTOR DEMENTO souvenier pink lace speedo... I was disappointed when you didn't turn around.. Chester WINKED at me and then went back to licking his...Well... You know... Story of my life.... All dressed up and no where to go....<<SIGH>>...
  22. Hmmmm...I get by pretty well with a folding stool and a set of Stony Creek shooting sticks... How about an anatomically correct blow up companion along with a well stocked portable cocktail bar ...?... I'll take the Sarah Evans model... Some of our more liberal posters might prefer the Michael Douglas/ Matt Damon Liberace' "double dipper" model... Gives a whole different slant to the term "pop up" blind...
  23. Happy Birthday, Bob... Planning to get LUCKY tonite ..??.. << grin>>.....
  24. Looking good, Joe... Looking forward to hearing about how they group...
