This morning while making coffee i looked out the window and there was a doe picking apples of of one of the older trees, she went around the whole tree grabbing whatever she could and chewed them up.It is a little early here in the Catskills I would think.

Looking for a backpack
thphm replied to Hunting3m's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
Your wrong about that I am 70 + and I carry the one ELMO has pictured on the first page.Nice and light and carry everything I need for the day. Just hate the fanny packs. -
If you wear glasses they can be a pain.I have one with a hole for the nose and it works good, the mesh type work good also.

Do deer jump the sound of the string or the sound of the arrow/broadhead?
thphm replied to huntography's topic in Bow Hunting
Die cut or fire formed natural turkey feathers are make less noise then plastic ,its a proven fact. One reason they came out with plastic is because it is more weather proof then natural feathers, but natural feathers can be made weather proof by using liquids and powders. The only natural feathers that are noiser are the old type Un formed feathers that you see on the real old ceader arrows.- 38 replies

Do deer jump the sound of the string or the sound of the arrow/broadhead?
thphm replied to huntography's topic in Bow Hunting
The reason I brought up the deer jumping the string in the Arrow Speed post was that it actually had it happen to me with my brand B recurve bow years ago when the string was released it actually made a twang sound. Tryed different strings and the sound just changed but it was still there. The arrows I was using at the time were Kerry Gesink footed compressed cedear arrows with real turkey feather fletching/5" die cut and Zwickey 125 grain broadheads, used the same arrows with other bows and they did no make that sound. As NFA-ADK said about practice from the tree stand is true. That is why i mentioned it in the New Tree Stand post, not only the height angle and wind but you have many branches, limbs and leaves that can be hit making noise and deflecting arrows. In that video looks cam be deceiving but to me it still looks un safe also.- 38 replies

Howard Hill and ( could have been ) Fred Bear side by side taking turns shooting from 40 to 60 pound bows, arrows at a target ( forgot what measurement system they used ) they shot 400 to 700 grain arrows, taking turns with each bow and arrows. They came up with the conclusion that the 600 grain arrow was the minimum they would use to kill a deer with any of the bows fro 40 - 60 pound draw weight. Arrows. a smaller diameter arrow will fly faster then a larger dia. arrow of the same weight. Broad heads. a four blade broad head will bleed an animal more the a 2 or 3 blade of the same weight in front of the same weight and spline arrow. So if you could find a carbon or carbon over aluminum arrow, slpined for your bow weighing 600 grains with a 4 blade broad head other then where your arrow hits, there is no reason that a deer should not bleed to death quick.

I had a bow that would twist at the limbs, I know it was not me because I gad 2 others of the same type and they did not do it. I just put that bow aside. After I hurt my hand and fingers and no longer could draw my bows back with my fingers, I went to installing string loops on all of my bows and using a Scott release. I did it with that bow also and no longer twisted the limbs. The string loop and release gave me the most consistant arrow placement I ever had with all of my bows and arrows.

I have had them sneaking on my property also.
-
Sounds good until you get some JA that sneaks onto the property an shoots what he or she thinks is a monster buck to them.

Did you ever think this arrow speed thing might be from years ago when most people shot Long bows and then Recurve bows and Compound bows were far an few between, The were trying to come up with ways of competing with the Deer Jumping The String. If some of you youngsters know what that is.

You ever see how people with no hands and some with no arms do things. Been in the same situation You are in. You will figure a way to do it and other things.

Just finished mowing 2 plots 20 min. ago.pictures show the deer hitting them when it is dark.Have to reset the day and time on the camera, it's way off.
-
Just check into the long range weather forecast, if it stays as dry as it is here, streams are very low according to some people, Weather forecasts keep on saying rain, but have not seen any yet, the ground is dry as a bone. You need plenty of sunlight and rain for things to grow.

A couple of examples, Platform with guard rails, not a wimpy strap on stand.2"x 6" lumber sandwitched around a 3 forked tree with threaded rod washers, lock washers and nuts,2" x 6" lumber for the platform.Very quiet and sturdy, 15' up.Used 5 years had a couple of 4 & 6 pointers walk within feet of it and never looked up.1 doe and 1 spike look up.Stand # 2 built the same way only 25' Up ( a friends platform ) I was up in it one day then a snow storm kicked up a 4 pointer came running Into the blowing snow, I turned to put the sights on it and it looked up right at me.Stand # 3 on Long Island, 2 man ladder stand with camo burlap, Got a 6 pointer never new I was there.Another time a Doe looked up at me from 30 yards away. So stands with camo or branches work most of the time,Depending On The Wind and where the deer are coming from, Into or With the wind.

Just go and set up a stand in the area you intend on hunting at a height you are comfortable with, set up some targets or things to shoot at, at different distances and mark them for reference. If you can go out at sunrise, noon and sunset and practice ,whenever you can.And keep in mind deer love to walk behind a tree right where you intend to place your arrow or bullet.

Basic Hunting Gear for Suffolk County
thphm replied to Lord of War's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
Born and raised on L.I. And hunted there for 50 + years, Wore Blaze Orange most of the time and got pleanty of deer, rabits, phesants. Camo became popular after the Korean War because they were giving old military clothing away. If I were to buy new hunting clothing it would be the red and black camo pattern, You wife and children will thank you if you are married, At least wear a Orange hat when walking around. The deer cannot tell what you are wearing, It is Movement and Odor that they pick out. If you do not plan on adding a lot of weight( to your body ) spend the money on better quality clothing. Cotton for the warmer days, and Wool with a wind block material for the cold days up in a tree stand. That fleece stuff litlery stinks when it absorbs your sweat, Under armor undies also, look for polyproplyne under garments, -
I just take my 4 wheel drive JD and put them in the bucket also use that to pick em up an tie the rear legs to a tree branch. At 72 you gotta make it easier.

One year we were hunting a friends property on the side of a hill it was raining that morning so we put on our bright orange plastic type rain gear, we sat on a pine tree stump on the edge of some young pines about 100 yards from the top. 3 good size does and there young ones came down from the top stopped 5 feet in front and stayed there for about 5 minutes eating and slowly walked off. stayed there for another 2 hours but no bucks were following them.

Muck vs Lacrosse boots
thphm replied to YFKI1983's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
LaCrosse years ago only because they were one of the few around. I have a pair of Muck Boots, not the barn type the ones with a an agressive thread Much lighter and warmer. Both are Not insulated.Do Not wear them for hunting.I carry a back pack with my well insulated clothing and insulated Pack Boots, with extra sock liners and Wool socks.I wear light clothing and hikeing type sneakers to get to where I am going, take the light weight stuff off and put the insulated clothing on.I have sat in tree stands at below 0 degrees with strong winds for hours many times.
