im a bit iffy on full inclusion and the setback part. but i will make call my rep as I am all for removing the 200 max poundage limit.

Actually have a barnett recruit cause the axiom was to much for my wife and their cs is great at boh excal and barnett. But after issues minor issues with both excal won me over. Though hunting in new york i realize the newer excals are out of my reach. Guess i will just keep my cash in my pocket and see if it changes. Was tempted to buy the excal bulldog. This at least keps the wife from yelling about a new toy.

Air rifle hunting for deer coming to N.Y. ?
Vince1 replied to 132 eight pointer's topic in Deer Hunting
Sorry but if they allow this in bow season ot in long island or anywhere for that matter and not xbows i will be seriously pissed -
not every state has a rule for poundage. and a 200 pound recurve is WAY underpowered compared to a good 200 pound compound xbow barnett ghost is doing 410 fps with 185 pounds Excal 405 is doing 405 fps with 290 pounds, which is crazy

Had some issues with my excalibur Axiom and took a ride down to PA to have it fixed. While there i wanted to pull the trigger on a new excal love that they are more compact and wanted a new toy. But what stopped me was the 200 pound limit on xbows. I just cant justify replacing my axiom for only a 5 foot per second increase i would gain from the current 200 pound xbow they have. I was looking at some of the newer compound xbows that are out and handled a few of those and i guess i am just not a compound guy. I mean i LOVE my recurve but rarely shoot my compound vert bow had the sight screw up on me mid hunt this past year as some bushes got caught in it and bent my pins bent it back and prayed. took a shot on a dear that was way low that day. got my wife a compound xbow and though i do love it for me i just cant see myself hunting with it cant get over the idea that its a machine that will screw up. which is why i think i LOVE the simplicity of anything recurve. So here i am lookin for a new bow and i just cant understand why NY has a 200 pound limit on recurve xbows, very limiting. wouldnt it make more sense to put a limit on the top speed with say a 400 grain arrow? say, we dont want anything going any faster than 450 fps or something. that to me makes way more sense. hopefully it changes cause i would love to get a new xbow but i guess i have to look for a new recurve instead. course thats a whole nother problem

Ive seen tracks in a spot i deer hunt up that way. Been meanin to get up there and check it out. Just gettin into yotes myself though so its possible it was just a dog of some hiker. Headin up either tonight or sat night for a night hike to see what i see

Leave it up to a judge. A kid who makes a bad call at 25 will be a differt man at 35. Losing his car and a lifetime ban of bunting and fishing is crazy. How about community service pickin up the trash or somethin. Dont be so quick to be harsh. Saw a vid of an old guy who was fishin with no license and they dragged him to court. Turns out thats how he fed himself as he was an off the grid type. Cant treat every situation the same. Now repeat offndrs are fair game

I admit I know nothing about air guns. recurves, compounds, crossbows (check). but from what little googling and youtube vids I actually like the Texan. I have two issues though. First I can shoot out to 45 yards with my xbow with very little noise. that's the max I have practiced at. it seems with air guns I would only get another 5 to 10 yards before the slug wouldn't exit the other side. but I can get pass throughs with my broadheads at that range. maybe im wrong cause honestly I don't know and im just going by what vids I have seen. second issue is with the wound channel it leaves, it seems that unless you get a perfect shot on a calm animal your just asking for issues. someone posted a vid of a guy taking a shot on an animal and getting a heart shot which dropped the animal in under 40 yards, which is nice, but I don't know about you but i hunt public land and man its been hard to get a shot on a calm animal. now i have seen guys with bows take shots at moving deer, i would guess that big bore air rifles would be getter at killing but cause more of an issue with unrecovered deer. for me, a few added yards over my crossbow with what i feel is a higher chance of wounding an animal isn't worth it. and honestly anyone saying its better for using close to residential or in areas where people don't like to hear shotguns going off could always just pick up a crossbow and get the same benefit an air rifle has. course that's just from what i have seen so far.
-
Tracking that animal in early season would have been a pain in the butt. people being who they are you would get guys out there taking iffy shots. I see a lot of unrecovered animals in the future. friend of mine got a deer with a rifle this year and I went over to help in gut it for the experience. as we were cleaning the meat we pulled out the slug that took him out. but he dropped right where he was. with an air gun they will run as the kill shot is like that of an arrow im not against this, but for me a crossbow does the same thing and leaves a better blood trail on a bad shot
-
I have that, don't bother, I like it but honestly its not really worth it. plus I have to keep adjusting it from time to time to keep it tight. it sticks on with Velcro that isn't all that good, I got some Velcro from home depot or something but honestly toward the end of the season I just kept my range finder on a string around my neck.

GamePlan Gear XBolt Crossbow Sling got one from amazon for like 25 bucks. I put it on first then put my backpack on. there is a quick release in the front that allows me to remove it and take a quick shot.

Wanna hear my story about being 33 and never hunting before?
Vince1 replied to Rockspek's topic in Deer Hunting
I know exactly what you mean. I grew up thinking guns were bad (city kid) and only police had guns and if you had one you were a criminal because that's what was fed to me in school and on the TV. wen to the army and got stationed in Colorado springs. MAN did my view change. buddy of mine had a firearm on him and I was like wtf are you doing. he quickly schooled me and my obsession with the outdoors began. fast forward a few years past me getting out and im back in NY and I had to readjust my thinking here. wish I woulda chose to stay in Colorado. If you were not raised to appreciate and respect the privilege its easy to be fooled into thinking its "Violent". People have been doing "violent" things with tools since the beginning of time. -
nice buck, congratz

i saw that deal on that one and almost pulled the trigger (hehe) from what I read its a mix between two of there crossbows and didn't see much negative on it. just got my wife the Barnett recruit and she loves it, otherwise I woulda got that one

That's what I did this weekend. last week I THINK he was still moving but slowly but man I think I replayed it to many times in my head cause im just not sure anymore. but this weekend I was at my anchor and following him till he stopped put the pin behind his shoulder and waited the split second for my sight to settle and watched as in that fraction of a second the view behind my arrow shifted from the bone of his shoulder. what can you do, next week I think I will just stop em. ive been spot on with locations these last two weekends. praying my luck holds out.

Past two weekends I had a deer in front of me and blew the shots both ranged at twenty yards. Mind you this is only my third season and the first two I hunted with a recurve shooting instinctively and harvested my first deer last year. was a small one but it was cool memory. This year I moved to the compound to try and extend my range past 15 yards and be a bit more accurate. I feel like putting up the compound after this week as I blew two shots on deer. with the recurve I don't stop em. the minute they stopped I saw em and let the arrow fly. course I had the patience to let em get withing 15 yards, if not I wouldn't bother taking the chance. got tired of seein deer at 20 25 and 30 that I just wouldn't shoot. now with a compound after missing two deer in two weekends im thinking is it me or the bow am I over thinking it? should I attempt to stop the deer or not. at the range I practice out to 40 and both shots on the deer were at under 22 yards. first they drop fast I mean WOW, I know aim low but my issue for these shots is that they never seem to stand still long enough for me to get on target (well these two) before I let my arrow fly. watching you tube vids you see the guys stop em but with the recurve I didn't need to and since I didn't want to spook em I just waited like I would a recurve but my instinct vs there's is faster than my trying to hold steady. appreciate the help.

im waiting to see a deer like that in the woods come in close enough to shoot I should say. never thought about putting a stick in the cavity, thanks

Internet maps. Not many markers there. The ones that are there i found within his border. Ranger got back to me today. Nice guy and was very helpful. Turns out they never surveyed it and this property aint high on the states improvemnt list recent small land aquisition or somethin. He said he walked it earlier in the year and its prolly new signs. Which im pretty sure they are. He gave me a rough area along a contour line whre the boundary exists and said he would walk it again in a week or to. Just gonna write a letter and go talk to the guy if i can. At least ask if i can retrieve from his land. Better to avoid conflict if i can. But from the rough estimate he gave me over the phone the guy is way over in some spots. Iffy in others.
-
Yeah im sure. I printed out the maps i have with the google earth images of the tracks from my garmin where i walked his border and the states map border. In places its as wide as 300 yards. Wasted my evenin hunt doin it. After i hear back from the ranger who handles the area who hopefully can confirm what i think i will at least knock o. The guys door and leave my contact info if he aint there. Last thing i want to do is get into an argument over it in the middle of the woods. Just pisses me off cause i feel like it was done on purpose and i reaaaly wana hunt this spot. Tons of sign and an actice scrape line right outside the edge he marked off. Plus i pushed 3 deer at least Walkin through his safe zone.

Ate up as in eaten or gobbled up i guess. Was sayin he posted into state land Got in contact with eco and he said its a ranger issue. Still waitin on another call back. Keeps botherin me because the guy has stands he built into both corners of the land that is to me clearly state land which overlooks a nice bedding area all blocked off to himself.

Found a great spot this weekend on public land. Problem is the landowner adjacent to this spot, I believe ate up in the range of 300 yards into state land. used garmin gps and my phone and my buddies phone we walked the overgrown logging road that the DEC Map put out that clearly shows it is on state land. wouldn’t walk through it normally as most of it is bedding. My issue though is he cut off any easy access to the spot that I want to hunt. My buddy actually at first just said keep out of it so we walked around it. Till he pulled out his phone after we made it to where the map and his signs agreed and saw just how much state land the guy ate up. I probably wouldn’t even step foot in there to hunt because land features would essentially funnel most deer to the other end But it kinda pissed me off that someone would do that. So now if I shoot a deer back there and it goes unto that land, am I wrong for going to retrieve it? At some point im gonna get down and knock on the guys door. Googled him and he is some kinda developer and actually owns a crap load of land in the area. maybe he recently purchased it from the dec or something and they haven’t updated the maps, who knows. But i did see dec signs within his borders also called the ECO for the area, waiting to hear back from him

man you just burst my bubble. been planning a trip out there for next weekend hopefully things turn around by then. good luck out there, hope you get something nice or at least get one for the freezer

leave the man alone about religion already. if you ask me believing in god and keeping him in your daily life would help a lot of douchebags I have run into out ALOT. now what grinds my gears is when my wife keeps me up late the night before I go hunting in hopes I don't go hunting... well not really
